This unbelievable Rangers stat will stun fans

Hot on the heels of manager Steven Gerrard’s accurate testimony of Rangers’ lack of killer instinct is a worrying stat which not only backs the manager up, but which implies not even the presence of Alfredo Morelos makes a difference in certain circumstances, which is of deep concern.

On Sunday, Daniel Candeias did something no other Rangers player had done for 453+ minutes – he scored from open play.

A genuinely disconcerting notion to realise that not even the presence of Morelos in the majority of the previous five matches had seen a single goal netted from open play despite the attempts otherwise.

It’s a huge area of focus for Rangers right now – that not only are Rangers struggling to make good chances, but the ones we are making in open play are not being taken.

Rangers, thankfully, are in a reasonable position in the league, with a conditional second place with uneven numbers of games played, but Gerrard knows only too well that his men are not making enough chances in open play, and certainly aren’t burying them when they do.

It’s a far cry from the demolition of Motherwell which saw a glut of open play goals, because those have dried up alarmingly and with suddenly in-form Hibs on the Wednesday horizon, Rangers will have to up their game dramatically from the workmanlike display against Hamilton if they are to secure a crucial three points at a venue they’ve struggled at for seasons.

And scoring from open play is absolutely critical in doing so.

  1. Doesn't help when our open play goals get continually ruled offside by the Kak officials we have here in Scotland.

  2. despite scoring more than celtic last year, it's been pretty evident for some time our failure to kill teams off has cost us dearly last year, can only hope history dose'nt repeat itself this year as they are there for the taking.

  3. Big step up required for Wednesday. I thought the attitude looked appalling against Hamilton, no drive, no urgency, no interest (Apart from candieas). Watch them going to take corners…you would have thought we were 6-0 up! A rocket up their arse required before Wednesday! On a positive note, I think hibs could be suited for us because they wont sit back and defend for 90 minutes, probably the opposite which should allow us to break fast into space.

  4. Livingston, get Ryan Hardie and Dolly Menga. We, get players who are scared to get in amongst them and put pressure on the opposition?? They better 'buck their ideas up' against Hibs, who really are, a 'hungry team.'

    • we could throw 2 young fearless attackers into the team to shake them up joe? gie youth a chance they might just surprise us, hansen once said u can't win titles wth youth, the rest is history!

    • Joe, Menga has scored 2 goals this season which were his first league goals since 2015. In what way does should that make him a Rangers target?

  5. would like to try candieas in the no.10 stevie, as i beleive he would create and score more goals. I also see morelos and moult being a real partnership along with davis pulling the strings in the centre, last but not least i would brng back waldo as we need winners in that dressing room during the run in, tav could slot into a midfield four or five and have security behind him?

  6. I had meant previously to point out our refusal to constantly have potshots from outside the box? all i want for xmas is another ALBERTZ please! how many times do you watch games and shout f*****g hit it. every c**t tryin to do it like barca, f**k that shoot on site RANGERS c'mon.

  7. I see this from a different point of view . Scottish Football is a negative process both on and off the pitch. It's affecting all the decent sides . 10 behind the ball excessive physicality for no reason apart from injury to the opposite players Poor Refereeing . Quality is not protected or valued . Yes we need more edge yes we need another striking option …and that creative player to open the defences

    • I have been saying this for years. Scottish football needs to up its game. 10 teams kicking shit out of Auld Firm. And refs allowing it.

  8. So have we played pish, missed open chances, made bad decisions, unlimited red cards and still ended up at the tap the league 😂😂😂👍
    Funny old game this fitba👏

    WATP LETS GO 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧 tapatheleaguefornoo🤔

  9. Good article and totally agree. Watched the Hibs highlights against shellic. Hibs had pace and power, and quick on the counter attack, something we are incapable of doing! Hibs will pump us if we continue to play like we have in the past few games!
