Steven Gerrard dealt big blow in January pursuit of target

Steven Gerrard and Rangers have been dealt a significant blow in their reported pursuit of Steven Davis after the midfielder confirmed he ideally wants to stay at Southampton and improve their season.

The former Ibrox captain has been the subject of intense speculation that he was seeking a move back to Rangers, but his words today suggest that is simply not the case.

He said:

“It’s probably the first time I have come into the last year of my contract, but my focus is just getting us (Southampton) out of this situation as quickly as possible. Having been here so long and feeling that responsibility, I want to see the club doing well.”

Some fans may not consider this a blow in all fairness, with a chunk of the support not convinced a 30+ midfielder is the solution to any of Rangers’ issues, but equally his experience and CV is not in question.

So, either way, going by his own words – he’d prefer to stay at St Mary’s, period.

  1. He's just being professional. He's not going to say "I want to go to rangers". Make it happen Stevie G! We don't want loans…Davis is like McGregor: a guaranteed success and not a gamble!

  2. Depends how you wish to read it. He is contracted to Southampton, he would be totally unprofessional if he came straight out and said Rangers is for me. Laff did the the same at Hearts till he signed.

  3. Yes Laff did the same at hearts came back and has been disappointed history will repeat itself here let him stay where he is. Never mind loans we need proper signings so get the cash out Dave and show us real fans the colour of your cash not empty promises and court cases. We want proper cash spent on proper players but we know King will let us down I hope I'm wrong but King has form for letting us down before

    • You need to take a look at the spl again and have another look at Davis ask any NI fan and they will tell you how good Davis is as for Laffs he’s nowhere neat the class of Davis

    • Scud you are 100% wrong to criticize David King he has never let Rangers down He has always put his money down without hesitation .

    • King hasn't put in any money. He also let rangers down massively when he was a key board member who let them go into Administration and Liquidation. Only once he's gone can Rangers improve.

    • Scud, remind me, who paid for Lafferty to move to Rangers? Was it Hearts? Or Cowdenbeath? was it Celtic, or Arsenal?
Or was it King, who paid with empty promises?
Or did a King owned Rangers apay cash?

      Who paid Scud, who paid?

  4. Agree with both comments above. But, IN, if it is all about experience and CV, let's get Gascoigne back. Much as I loved Davis, Gazza beats his CV and experience. Or, if we need to believe they still have the legs to get up and down the pitch and the sharpness to make a difference, neither.
Both greats, both memories, both lacking a future at Ibrox.

    • Totally agree. I thought we were going to get young, hungry players with potential. This was so we could develop them and sell for a profit.
But no, instead we go for players who are over 30, past their best with no resale value.
We need to start looking forward and stop going back the way.

  5. Davis hasn't said anything that suggests he won't move. Read between the lines:
First time I've been in last year of my contract (I'm available in January)
My focus is on Southampton (as long as I'm here)
Feeling that responsibility (hope the club relieve me of that responsibility)
I want to see the club doing well (preferably from somewhere else)
