Rangers fans have chosen a new captain, and it’s not who’d you think

Last summer Steven Gerrard made a rather controversial decision – he made interim captain James Tavernier permanent leader on the pitch, a call which did not attract universal praise, but most fans tried to make the best of it.

However, following his frankly sub-par leadership fans have started having major doubts about his suitability for the role, and after he left Jordan Rossiter to deal with the media on Sunday the pressure on his armband has become notable.

In a recent Ibrox Noise poll, only 8% of respondents continued to endorse Tavernier as permanent captain, while the marginal favourite to get the gig was Scott Arfield on 29%, while he was closely followed by goalkeeper Allan McGregor on 27%.

Northern Ireland captain Gareth McAuley only attracted 10% while ex-Aberdeen captain Ryan Jack got a credible 19%.

But it does appear, of the present squad, the overwhelming favourites are Arfield and McGregor. We at Ibrox Noise would support the Canada international for the job, such is the praise we’ve lavished on his leadership qualities in midfield so far, while McGregor would be an excellent vice.

One thing is for sure, support for Tavernier in the role is now pretty thin.

  1. Connor Goldson is vice captain at the moment and Tavenier is the worst captain in all my years, 45 years watching The Gers, get the cunt punted in January and take that fucking Donkey worral back to forrest and make Arfield captain, and dont give me all this pish about his goals and assists he cant fucking defend and fuck knows why he takes the corners on the left as he's a right back who will get caught out on the counter,he's been lucky so far also bring back big Nikola…No Surrender…

  2. 100% has too be Mcgregor for me he has the temperament and experience for it he had already shown he’s not shy too shout at his fellow players if they aren’t playing well.

I can’t really see anyone back chatting too the big man as he is a little bit crazy lol.

I would then make Ryan Jack the vice captain.

    • Fb… you were doin' good 'till your last sentence … Jack isn't good enough for us and is a liability, he continues to go about stamping on opponents and will cost us sooner than later. We have too many similar defensive minded midfielders imo, where as the mhanks have a totally offensive midfield who are all goal scorers who know how to run in behind defences… oh how we need a young Mr Durrant.

  3. As much i like Tavenier going forward, he must be the worst full back we have had for a long while. He does not improve in that position no matter what excuse is given i would sell him and reinvest the money, as for Worral the comments he comes out with about going back to his parent club, makes you think his mind is all wrong and only using his time at Rangers to get a game from time to time until he goes back.We need players who are 100% wanting to play for the jersey.

  4. What Pure tosh. Fans should have no say re who should be captain. TRUST THE MANAGER. And I do 100%.I have never seen or read such a fickle site as IN. Last Monday, Tav (following Tynecastle) was world class. Arfield for most of the season you have branded ineffective, at best. Now he's your choice for captain. Morelos: one minute (and I loved this one…) was going to net Rangers £30m. Next minute he's selfish, has serious indiscipline problems, misses too many changes. So, in typical IN style: answer – get rid off in January. In opinions (and I'm being kind in labelling them as such) you change from match to match: ridiculous!!!

    • With all due respect we praised Tav’s attacking endeavour at Tynecastle, we didn’t praise his leadership and rarely have. We’ve also consistently opposed his captaincy. We’ve also pretty much praised Arfield from the off bar his little dip in October. And Morelos DOES have issues, but when he’s on his game he’s devastating. No innaccuracy to point that out. So, frankly sir, kindly don’t misrepresent our posts and opinions to suit your own criticism of us. Good day!

  5. If stories are to be believed about Davis coming back in Jan ,surely he'd get the respect and command armband .Only Mcgregor from current squad has enough clout in dressing room ,Tav was a disaster of an appointment .

  6. That's funny Davieboy – You didn't seem to trust Gerrard a few days ago when you were berating his 6 changes and moaning about his inability to change things? – If anyone changes from match to match it seems to be yourself friend.

ps – Still waiting for you to reply to my post were you called me a complete eejit and arse for daring to suggest Tav is the worst captain in the clubs history..I even helped you out with giving you the captains we have had in the last 30 odd years..Feel free to correct me please..

  7. Does anyone really think that at this point in time that the captain of Rangers is important.

FFS discuss the many issues that are affecting the club but who is captain isn't one of them.

Who can we realistically bring in to break down teams parking the bus. Where can we find a striker within our means who can take the pressure off Morelos. What can Gerard & his team do to improve the defensive issues that have clearly developed with what are obviously talented young players.

Who gives a sh*t about who is captain. It's not important on or off the park.

  8. Off course it is important Donald!. A captain and leader is vital to any successful football club and always has been! To suggest it isn't is ridiculous! – Gough, Ferguson, Terry, Gerrard, even Lego muncher at Parkhead! Look at Man U over the years with their success and their captains. Look at them now, ruderless and often slipping up against teams they really should be beating with the quality they have!, whilst Man City and Kompany are NOT slipping up when it matters most. Same as us, you could say! Maybe if we had a Ferguson in the team certain players wouldn't be getting away with their half hearted performances and contributing to us dropping so many ridiculous points!? – We have shown we can play, what we have also shown is we have no character and no leader and it is vital we have someone on the park leading and keeping the players on their toes. It's as important as any of the other problems you are spot on about. But come on fella, you've seen Rangers and the importance of the captain over the years to our success…utter nonsense suggesting it isn't important!

  9. Sorry William can't agree with you. We have leaders on the park. McGregor, McAuley, Arfield are all experienced and vocal on the park, McAuley even captains his national team. You don't need an armband to be a leader.

Kompany played in less than half of city's league games last year yet they were champions and only once in the league cup which they also won. And Man U are not failing due to lack of a captain. Their demise happened when a certain Alex Ferguson stepped down. Their leader off the park was much more important than any leader on it.

If the players we have need someone to shout at them on the park to motivate them or keep them on their toes then we have bought the wrong players. Playing for Rangers must be all the motivation any player needs.

As I said we have much bigger issues than who is captain and they will have to be solved by Gerrard off the park not a captain on it

  10. Fair enough Donald and a good point about Komapny etc. I still think Man U are partly failing because they don't have a leader on the park, but get your point totally. I know we have a few leaders but for me mate I feel this team would benefit 1 character like a fergie or Gough letting them know what is and isn't acceptable. Take the Dundee game, the team looked lost, nobody taking charge. And I feel these kind of games we would have better results had we had a Ferguson type on the park letting them know what is and isn't acceptable and driving them to be more direct(I know the manager does that too but someone on the park doing it shouldn't be underestimated). And I actually feel having that type of player would be fantastic for guys like Tav and we would see more of his qualities rather than frailties by getting direction on the park..Just my opinion though mate. Cheers, WATP

    • I think one thing we can agree on is that we have looked really flat and clearly lacking something in our last 2 games. Whatever the cause hopefully Gerard works out what it is and fixes it before Thursday.
