Ambitious announcement by Rangers shows direction

With the fanfare over Ryan Jack’s contract extension, it must be acknowledged it is only for an extra year, and rather than it being necessarily an extension, it’s simply a new three-year deal to replace the old one he signed last year when he joined. A wage rise, if you like.

And as cynical a description as this may sound, we are completely in favour of it all.

The fact is Jack, at his best, is a complete mainstay in this Rangers team – he produced another excellent performance against Hibs to match his peak earlier in the season, and if he can continue to remain injury free and put in performances like these, he becomes a categorical asset.

And we remind you all of the Steven Gerrard quote about striker Alfredo Morelos a few months ago:

“We can’t fight to keep our best players and then not reward them with what they are worth. That is one for the board to discuss, but I feel he should be looked after. My job is to manage the situation, tell him how much he is loved here.”

Well Ryan Jack, maybe not the superstar of the team in the way Morelos is, is nevertheless critical to how we play now and deserved a wage rise in line with that.

As Rangers improve more and more in line with what we expect from Ibrox’ finest, the salaries will have to reflect that improvement – Jack does appear, at his best, to be a really proper Rangers level midfielder, and that kind of player costs a lot of money.

It’s the right direction, as long, of course, as it is within our means.

This is not to endorse big money wages, naturally – but to suggest that Gerrard is right – that securing our best players requires the kind of reward their contribution deserves.

And pinning Jack down to 2021 hikes his value, and keeps the player very happy indeed.

And that’s good for everyone.

    • When he's good he's very good like the Hibs game. He's a little to inconsistent. That is something he needs to sort out.
Good to get him tied down on a longer contact though

  1. Agree with all you say. Proper Rangers standard player. Possible captain, I am definitely happier when he is in the team. Does a proper job and no messing about. more players with his attitude the better we will be. WATP
