8 to 3 – controversy over Old Firm poll

The Old Firm clash has been given some added spice following a poll on the BBC’s website which suggested only three Rangers players are good enough to feature in a composite Old Firm XI.

According to respondents, only Allan McGregor, James Tavernier and Alfredo Morelos would make it, with the other eight positions all taken up by players of an East End persuasion.

This means no place for Croatian international Borna Barisic, Albanian international Eros Grezda, Canada international Scott Arfield or Scotland international Ryan Jack, to name just four of the high-profile absences.

Instead, respondents believe the likes of McGregor, Sinclair and Forrest would be first choice every time, with Celtic’s Edouard also ahead of Daniel Candeias, Ryan Kent and Kyle Lafferty.

Whether we on the site agree with this wholly or not, it suggests, for the neutral, and for those fans of both sides who responded, there appears to be a consensus that Celtic’s are miles ahead of Rangers’ counterparts.

The only way to defy this opinion is to win at Ibrox.

  1. To be honest,
-Barisic will have to prove it over a sustained period to get the LB slot.
-Grezda is not even the best winger in our team
-Arfield has a case to make but again, has not delivered enough sustained performances
-Jack should be in that team
-I would also take Goldson, but admit to bias
-I like Candeias, but admit to bias

Truth is, because they have won everything for years, the onus is on Rangers players to prove they are better, we will not get any 50:50 calls. In composite teams, on the BBC, on the pitch from refs, anywhere. We need to change that by outplaying them, not once but again and again, home and away.

Our time will come. Despite some poor results, some poor decisions by SG (Worrall?), this team is stronger in depth and quality than last season and with another 2-3 players, will come good. We desperately need some quality in the AM role. Perhaps temporarily if Arfield, Dorrans and Murphy all return, but even then none of them have really set the league on fire. We need another striker to take the burden off Morelos, ideally Solanke on loan for me, then Hardie, Shankland or AN Other in the summer until Dallas and Rudden come through. Perhaps two if Alfredo is off.

We need a settled defence. Personally I would like Halkett who has shone at Livingstone. Cheap enough that if it doesn't work out there is little loss. I would also like to keep Kent.

But I will put my faith in SG and the scouts

    • £10 million minimum from European run. £1 million for Foderingham, fingers crossed. Perhaps a few pennies from a couple of other offloads.
Big two are Tavernier and Morelos. I would keep Moreols until the summer if any bids are under £20M. I like Tavernier but we have Flanagan who will score less but is available. We could use £7M or more in a better way

  2. We are much better in squad than last season but we do lack quality. Those chosen above people like Jack and Arfield are not better either sorry. Be honest who would you have
Sinclair or Arfield Jack or MC Gregor it's another hurdle we have to overcome public dislike of all things Rangers . They have had consistent teams and steady money from a non challenging league that is now begining the change and the natural equilibrium in Scotland is being restored. Only Rangers and Rangers alone will take back control and restores some credibility to Scottish Football which is viewed as 'mickey mouse' and has now no impact on World Football not just European . Let's hope we continue our journey Onwards WATP

  3. There's no doubt, we're improved from last season. But we do need to get to the stage, where we can beat Celtic, regularly.
