Steven Gerrard must make this dramatic switch in midfield

Barely a month ago Ibrox Noise projected Jordan Rossiter as a potential January departure. While we loved him, his inability to stay fit and his mere 10 appearances in two years had told its own story.

We didn’t want to say goodbye, but there are only so many times you can flog a dead horse.

Yet, a bare month on, Rossiter has managed a full 90 minutes on 3G no less, and while he hasn’t featured since, the fact he’s been involved on the bench and been taking prime stage with the media duties of late suggests Jordan Rossiter, finally, after 24+ long, long months is ready to make a major impact at Ibrox.

Earlier today we confirmed Rangers fans believe Lassana Coulibaly should be dropped due to poor form, and at the same time, it seems the stage is finally set for Rossiter to replace him, and to finally become a fixture in Rangers’ first team.

There’s no doubt he has talent – lots of it.

We only had to watch his now-legendary cameo at Easter Road to know what this kid has about him.

He plays football in an excellent spirit, he bursts a gut, he runs his heart out and he has no lack of football ability to back all that up. With some excellent vision, simple retention passing and hard tackling plus leadership, Rossiter is every inch the model of Steven Gerrard himself at that age.

The only thing he’s lacked is fitness.

And with Dorrans out till next year, Coulibaly struggling for form, and even doubts over Ovie Ejaria’s fitness now creeping in (ankle) Rossiter definitely has his chance.

He’s had absolutely horrendous luck with injuries, just like Ryan Jack, and we would be willing to say these two are the finest defensive midfielders currently at Ibrox (regular readers will know we hold Greg Docherty high in that regard too). Ross McCrorie is very able as well, but we feel these two shade it.

Either way, Rossiter surely has his chance now – Gerrard has shown willing to start him, and get him involved – that bodes well for his future and if he can hold fitness and gain form, Rangers almost have a new signing.

Quite a turnaround from not that long ago!
