Is Stevie Ger about to make a big January mistake?

It’s hardly really a secret that Rangers need new blood come January, and speculation has very much turned to incoming players to arrive in the next window.

We’re not yet clear on whether we’re looking at loans or permanent signings, but the winter period is notoriously difficult to get players during, so Steven Gerrard, Andy Scoulding and Mark Allen have their work cut out to get the right men.

But we do now know the positions Gerrard seeks to fill, and we’d have to say we’re a little surprised by one of them.

It has been understood Stevie seeks a new striker, a new defender, a new creative player and a new midfielder.

We completely endorse three of those. Can you guess what we’re a little surprised by?

We definitely need more defensive quality in there, be it the recently-linked Adam Lewis for left back, or a decent addition centrally. We also sure as heck need more strikers given we effectively have just the one right now. And there’s painfully little doubt we need a lockpick, a creative player given we’ve lost Dorrans and Ovie Ejaria is struggling to deliver on that front.

No, the one we’re baffled by is midfielder. We have a complete deluge of the things!

Andy Halliday, Greg Docherty, Jason Holt, Ross McCrorie, Scott Arfield, Ryan Jack, Jordan Rossiter, Lassana Coulibaly, Graham Dorrans, Ovie Ejaria…

Is 10 midfielders, be they loans, and at Ibrox currently or not, not enough?!

Surely Rangers do not need more middle men for chief’s sake.

With Docherty likely to return in January that is almost like a new signing in itself, albeit it may be to replace Coulibaly who we’d love to see return to Angers.

What Rangers are struggling with right now is quality in the final third – we are bossing games in midfield and passing like it’s going out of fashion, so another player for in there seems utterly foolish, but bringing in two creative players would be a far more prudent course of action.

We believe a defender, two lockpicks and one, maybe two strikers would be the best use of the window in January.

What do you think?

  1. Completely agree. A good striker, even on loan like Solanke, for the number 2 slot. One, or even two number 10s to create, or use Morelos there with a good stroker. Cover for left back not essential, with 4 guys covering; Barisic, Flanagan, Wallace and Halliday.

  2. Definitely need creative midfield players as our current midfield players are to pedestrian and slow at turning defence into attack. One creative midfield player and one with direct drive running straight towards opposition half. Cut out this tippy tappy passing the ball from side to side which allows the opposition to get their defence organised. A goal scoring center forward and a left back. Lets play higher up the park and camp the opposition into their own half like the good old days

  3. Players will always want to come to Rangers, money plays apart or using the club as a stepping stone which i don't mind if we get a couple of good seasons out of them and a good return in our investment in the player, but i think players today see S.P.L.is a bit of a mickey mouse league, sure games are not easy but this playing four times a season plus any cup matches may not appeal to some younger and up incoming footballers, players at the other end of their careers looking for their last decent paycheck and playing for us, i am sure, as i have said before we seem to have some very promising young players on our books fingers crossed they can bridge the gap and make a name for themselves.

  4. We signed 15 players in the summer. Now talk of signing another 4 in January. So that will be 19 players in half a season. What are our coaches doing. I thought we were going to bring young players to improve and sell on for a profit.
Our coaching and management team don't seem to want or are able to do this.
We can't keep on buy players , keeping them for a half a season, saying they are not good enough. Then letting them go at a loss and bringing other players in.
If the manager can't improve players is he the right man for the job?

    • It would take a miracvle to get 15 right out of 15. I am happy with the progress so far. I agree this can't go on for ever, but think most people would agree on the deficiencies. Having said that, if we hadn't lost Murphy and Dorrans and sold Windass, we might be ok in attacking midfield. Life happens, we move on

  5. 2 Strikers – 1 loan 1 Permanent
(Unless SG plans to use Rudden/Hardie…then Just 1)

2 CBs to Replace Worrall & McAuley and Act as Backup for Katic & Goldson
(my 3 options would be Bates/Halkett/Lindsay)

    And for the No.10/Playmaker/Creative Midfielder

I know this would be a Controversial move but id try n Pinch the Boy Ferguson from The Sheep!
    …Boy has The Blue Family
    Lets take him Home!

    • Agree with Halkett who is out of contract and Lindsay if he comes available, but don't see Hamburg letting Bates go for a price we could swallow.
Agree on striker, we have some great young forwards coming through, like those two and Dallas.
Don't know enough about Ferguson, is he No 10 type player? If he continues to progress over next couple of seasons, dad and uncle will ensure he runs his contract down and comes home

    • Yeah, Former Bluenose and was Best Player on the Park when they played us earlier in Season

Not sure about Lindsay's Contract Situation but I know they eould be asking around £2.75-£3.5m for him, Which for a 6'3 23yr old Scottish Centreback doing well in English Championship …Bargain!

Nah I don't think so either sadly
Heard Prem Teams being quoted between £6.5-£8mill

Yeah, Cant See Hardie or Rudden getting a Look-In though.

      Yeah He's Naturally a 10.
…I Hope So because He's taken us apart this season.

  6. I like your take on things bigbaws you seem quite an honest chap. Good to see some true blues talking sense together.

  7. I wouldn't go over the top as you rarely get what you need in January. We badly need another striker, a goal scoring midfielder and a number 10 playmaker. But those are exactly the same kind of players that every club in the world are looking for. If we could get the striker only I'd be happy. Get one of the other two and I'll be delighted.
No we don't need another left back. Barasic with Wallace, Flanagan and Halliday as cover is more than enough. If it's not then we can play without one and go to a back 3.
