“He’s constantly in my face” – Gerrard reveals curious player relationship

In another interesting statement delivered by Rangers manager Steven Gerrard, the boss has confirmed not only is he considering dropping Connor Goldson but that the ex-Brighton stopper has been ‘in his face’ recently.

Goldson has been a mostly consistent defender since coming north, and despite some poor matches (Killie, Motherwell and Spartak) is widely regarded as the best overall summer capture.

He also famously had health problems which laid him out of action for the best part of two years, and has reignited his career at Ibrox, but due to those issues didn’t play much football and is now champing at the bit to keep playing.

And Gerrard has admitted Goldson is desperate to keep in the XI.

He said to the Sun:

“Connor is constantly in my face saying, ‘Don’t give me a rest, don’t give me a rest, don’t give me a rest’. But there will be a time when I have got to help him. He won’t like that but it is my job. Connor has played a lot of games but that’s the case for a lot of these players. This is the squad we have put together.”

Gerrard is right here – Goldson does need a rest and we advocated such action not that long ago. He has only missed one match of the entire season, and while he’s ‘making up for lost time’ he also is only human and his form is currently suffering a touch from the absolute lack of putting his feet up.

With Gareth McAuley now ready at long last, Goldson doesn’t have the pressure he did – and the former Shrewsbury man might be begging to play but like Gerrard says, it’s his job to manage these players’ minds and bodies and get the best out of them while optimising use.

How well he does that remains to be seen, but we do agree with him on trying to be careful with the Englishman.

  1. Just watch how much more organised we are when big GMac finally plays, very underated cb who gives 100% all the time and weighs in with a lot of goals for a defender.

I think he's gonna show he is easily head and shoulders above the other 3 centre backs we have.
