A dramatic January midfield swap at Ibrox

There will be a lot of changes come January, with Rangers’ performances not quite nailing the level we feel this squad can, and a lot of hype this past month or two has been about Steven Gerrard’s summer error on Greg Docherty and how his excellent displays for Shrewsbury have seen him end up a likely recall in January.

This could mean two things – that finally we get to see this midfield destroyer doing what he does best in the place he loves the most, and secondly, the axing of Lassana Coulibaly who, around three games notwithstanding, has been an extremely poor addition.

The hype train has discussed Umar Sadiq and his loan termination, well, for us Coulibaly is barely any better and we can genuinely envisage the literally switching around of the Malian for the ex-Hamilton lad.

It’s what most Rangers fans would love to see, in all honesty.

Docherty lives and breathes Rangers, he’s one of us. He took rejection by Gerrard on the chin completely, packed up his things, and went to Shrewsbury to prove his manager wrong. The absolute correct attitude when you feel you’re destined for greater and better thing (with all due respect to the League One side).

Meanwhile Coulibaly’s loan, after promising so much in late July, has become a flat pancake and he offers next to nothing in midfield. Docherty, Rossiter and Jack, on the other hand, would be a truly wonderful trio of defensive midfielders to have in the side, with McCrorie as further depth.

If January sees Coulibaly’s loan terminated and Docherty’s return confirmed, we think that’s a call few Rangers supporters would complain about.

  1. We all know Coulibally has what it takes, he showed that prior to injury. But now he plays with fear as opposed to positive aggression. But I don't know if Gerrard and the coaching staff have told him to ease off a bit. The reason I say that, When i watched Greg Docherty in the first few games, I thought, yes, another Steven Davis, covers every blade of grass, however, his energy and aggression died out. I remember an interview with Greg after a couple of games, he said Murty told him to calm down and be more structured in his play and stop running about. I just wonder if Coulibally was told the same. I can understand Coaches needing to have a game plan, but sometimes that prevents players from expressing themselves.
    This is just an observation.
In answer to the question, I picked both, but only if Gerrard lets them off the leash. Our team as a whole is beginning to look like Warbutons team,,all tippity tappity with nothing in the final third. Opposition teams already have us sussed. Our midfield is lightweight with very little quality. The sooner we get Katic back with Goldson, the better!!

    • We agree on the 4-3-3 – it's starting to get dated and it mostly hasn't been structured right until St Mirren with a DM, CM and AM. But what the management call 'bossing the game' we see as tippy-tap to death all too often.

  2. It's not that long ago you were raving about coulibaly, are players not allowed to have a dip in form,or maybe his injury was worse than first thought, suddenly a good looking player is a dud,and now you want to get rid, our support are the worst for jumping on the bandwagon to slag off players,it wasn't that long ago that many on here were trying to get rid of the buffalo.

    • Coulibaly was excellent in two games against Rapid and Hearts. The team played their best in these 2 matches. That was just a month ago. We had international break and he has an injury since. Give us a break.

    • Alan, the team did indeed peak in those matches. Coulibaly did not stand out against Hearts. We gave him a generous 7 following a quiet match and no one disagreed, including you. He had a much better match against Rapid and we rated him 8. But if those two are enough for you then we respect that.

  3. The thing is if we keep bringing players in at the start of a season then after 4 or 5 months move them on because they Turkish delight how do we ever build a winning team .

  4. i remember mentioning at the start of the season that I liked Gerrard's style as he didn't seem to cater to the tippy tappy style. We could lose the ball safe in the knowledge that we could press and pressurize teams into mistakes when they were in possession and attack quickly when regaining possession. We were playing more multi dimensional, more long balls, maybe more direct, but now its all about possession and trying to hold on to one goal advantages.

Hope he can sort it out.

  5. Gies peace…our style hasn't changed a bit. We didn't play longer balls or were any more direct at the start o the season…some players have hit a dip in form, as Stevie G forecast, a few bumps in the road. A new team completely rebuilt with players people on here were raving about don't all of a sudden become bad players…we are not quite there yet but are not far away from being a really good team. Not too long back we were losing to Alloa, Peterhead and Stirling Albion…now we are going to places like Moscow and as disappointing as it was to throw the game away tonight surely getting behind the team, players and management when that it a wee dip and need us most did be better than writing them off as rubbish???…and a wee bit of perspective on how far we've come in the last few years?

I'm as disappointed as every blue nose tonight but I'm right behind the manager and players 100%.
    WATP…Let's go!!!
