Should Rangers take action over strong allegations?

Tonight Rangers face Rapid Vienna (or Rapid Wien for you connoisseurs) and that really is all we will focus on after this piece, but alas the last few days have been overshadowed a touch by the alleged actions of Daniel Candeias and Alfredo Morelos which have been significantly in the media.

The fact neither player has denied the allegations suggests they are true, as did manager Steven Gerrard’s condemnation of any player guilty of what they are accused of doing.

In short, Livingston’s Lee Miller has alleged that Morelos in particular failed to commit to post-match protocol and shake hands with various Livi players, something Miller has also apparently accused his buddy Candeias of as well.

Indeed, the fact that Andy Halliday and Borna Barisic had to get involved as well does indicate something a tad unsavoury occurred, and rather than Rangers players being petty and refusing to shake hands over ‘over exuberant’ celebrations, Miller’s team mate Declan Gallagher claims it was the initial refusal of hand shakes which led to Livi being lavish with their post-match celebrations.

We may seem like we’re making a big deal out of nothing, a mountain out of a molehill, but if Rangers are supposed to stand for one thing, certainly for ourselves, it is dignity.

And a refusal to shake hands at the whistle whether it was a result of pettiness over the result, opponent conduct during the match or post-match celebrations is simply unacceptable and beyond childish.

It is extremely undignified.

Their manager agrees too – Gerrard demands his players shake hands, regardless of how they feel, because it is the right, gentlemanly and proper thing to do, and anyone who doesn’t, simply isn’t being a gentleman and isn’t fit for the Rangers shirt.

The code of conduct isn’t written into the rules, but neither is being a gentleman and kicking the ball out of play for an injury, but most players do this because at the end of the day, while everyone is earning their living out there, they are supposed to honour the integrity of the sport and the safety of their opponent.

And guess what, James Tavernier agrees as well. While he didn’t expressly refer to the handshake refusal, he led by example in confirming Rangers players must behave like them and use any adversity to improve themselves, rather than reacting. We’ve had doubts about Tav as captain, but this was proper leadership.

End of the day, if it really is true about Morelos and Candeias, they’ve shamed the shirt and brought disrepute on the club and themselves.

And we don’t really want players like that.

  1. I never really agreed with the handshake at the end of a match, after all, the opponent has just tried to beat you which ever way necessary, sometimes as much as cheating. So why should you have to shake hands?

  2. It's a bit rich to be condemning the players when we don't know all the facts. Bit of a storm in a tea cup if you ask me and to almost suggest we get shot of these players is a gross over-reaction.

    • Ah, the old 'we don't know all the facts' fallacy – the one used in every incident when it's easier to sit on the fence and not have an opinion by claiming 'it'll all come out down the line' when it absolutely, 100% never does bar the testimonies at the time. But no, we aren't suggesting anything like get shot – internal disciplining would suffice.

    • It's not a fallacy – we DON'T know all the facts! And it's got to be better than jumping to conclusions and making assumptions based on the little info that you have! If you're not suggesting we get shot then perhaps you might want to revise the last line of your article as "we don’t really want players like that." seems to suggest otherwise.

    • Alleged, media, Lee Miller. Great sources. You should know better. All petty. F Kelly is correct. Move on.

  3. Shaking hands is expected and the right thing to do, always. I might have guessed, Morelos would be at the centre of this. The guy acts like a teenager and gets away with it, every time, as far as I can see. He needs sorting out. As if things aren't hard enough, without his, childish behaviour.

  4. I’ve been a massive supporter of El Buffalo as IN know well. As I’ve locked horns a couple of times regards Morelos and defending his goals record and work rate.

This is the one time I do fully agree with IN full article. To add insult to injury with the cowardly coin thrower, we then get this shit. It’s a disgrace towards the Club and paints a bad bloody picture.

For supporters to condone this behaviour of players and coin throwers then it’s sad day for the famous Glasgow Rangers

  5. Tbh morelos spends every game of football getting kicked, shoved and sometimes just blatantly jumped on top of. Refs dont see half of it and he loses it. If thats the style of play we're dealing with screw being a gentleman. Warburton tried that gentleman nonsense, we dont run into corner flags and all that. We ended up whipping boys and pussies bullied all over the park. Get in the oppositions head make them hate you (they already do) and make it for good reason!

  6. Maybe I am wrong but in the short video that was shown was that not Gallagher making gestures towards the Rangers players and laughing at them pot and kettle comes to mind he is a former Celtic boys club player and that says it all did Celtic even think about taking action against Griffiths for tying an arse wiping cloth on a post at a lot of grounds no way

    • Agree with 4-4-2 , Gallagher approached our players with a sneering face and was obviously making unsavoury comments at them . Yet The pricks got the cheek to say he did fuck all wrong ? Get yerself tae fuck !

  7. Morelos if the facts are correct in becoming an embarrassment ,we seem to be talking more about him if we win, lose or draw in a match,i hope it does not happen but i get the bad feeling one day he is going to really cost the team by his actions on the field.

  8. Who writes this pish! Watch the final whistle again and you'll see why they didn't shake hands, livi players are shouting in faces and celebrating like they won the league. Sure, be happy about winning but that was like watching a team of Scott Browns celebrating beating rangers. The livi players were undignified in their celebrations. Get behind your team for f*#ck sake! For some reason ibroxnoise love to berate our own players, don't be as infantile as them. They didn't shake hands, get over it! Get behind the players instead of all this pish!

    • So you admit their behaviour was poor. You accept Gerrard was right. Yet this article, which says this, is the one in the wrong. Wonderful.

    • Ok,ok. Behaviour was poor. We're playing an important game tonight tho. The article written isn't what we need just now,the handshake incident hasn't been reported about for the last day or two. We need to forget this now and get behind the team, Morelos is still a boy! Still needs guidance and has a hell of a lot to learn but we as supporters need to put an arm around him too, it's not only Steven Gerrard's job to do so. All I'm saying is…c'mon ibroxnoise, get behind the team for once.

    • Think ‘for once’ is a little unfair. We’re always behind the team. Look at plenty of our positive content. It’s just that we’re actually willing also to criticise where we deem it due. This wins us many friends and influences people (!)

  9. "Shamed the shirt and brought disrepute on the club and themselves". Going a bit far there isn't it. Yes, if true the pair did the wrong thing but let's put it in perspective. They made themselves look a wee bit immature nothing more and I'm sure it happens in heaps of games every weekend. Gerrard gave them gentle telling off and that's that.
I think this has more to do with some Rangers fans (and at times this sites) attitude to Morelos. Some people just seem to be looking for any reason to come down on him. The kids not perfect but he's a hugely important player for the club. Some, including Gerrard, think he's one of the best we've got, temper tantrums or not.

  10. As with some others, I don't get why someone like Morelos can be kicked, punched, pushed, tripped and fouled for 90 minutes by a defender, in direct contravention of the rules of the game yet should be obliged to shake his hand at the end. The defender is cheating, deliberately, yet Morelos is the bad guy? No.

If we want to "honour" an opponent why not do what they do in rugby, form a line and clap the opponent off the field, in turn? Because it wouldn't happen.

Can someone clarify for me, do players shake everybody's hand, or the nearest person's hand, or a certain number of players' hands? I do not know what the accepted convention is. Before I condemn someone for not following generally accepted practice, I would need to know what it is.
    Incidentally, Worrall? Again? WTF!!

  11. Should 100% be up to the individual to shake hands if they want to…if you don't want to – get the fuck up the tunnel & away instead of getting into these kind of situations…

  12. SWH fair points mate.

To be honest you either have one or two options –
    A – shake their hand.
B – refuse and spit the dummy out..

For what it’s worth Boxers sometimes near kill each other Rugby players too – the one common thing is this you shake hands and or hug out of respect…

  13. If all players are expected to shake hands, then Rangers players should. End of. Manager should then come out and destroy any who are hacking away at our players throughout the game.
But if ex-Celtic players wish to behave in an unprofessional manner, then we should ask SFA to define acceptable behaviour. If they can't behave, then it is hard to blame our players for not responding

  14. Ibrox Noise concentrating on the negatives yet again – no surprise there then!
And suggesting that we should get rid of players because of this?!
    Get a grip ffs!!
