Should Rangers fans be concerned by midfielder’s disappearance?

When Graham Dorrans was not only named as a sub v Villarreal but came on and nearly stole the show with his stunning cameo, it was beyond unexpected.

He produced more neat footwork against St Johnstone, and a reasonably smooth showing against Ayr, during which he was removed early in the second half.

That was the 26th of last month and, as far as we are aware, Graham Dorrans has not played a minute of football since then.

After we hyped up his return and were blown away by the skills he showed, and even perpetuated the idea of Steven Gerrard building his Rangers around a talent like Dorrans, the former Scotland international has gone completely AWOL and hasn’t even featured in a single match day squad since that cup quarter, never mind playing aforementioned minutes.

Thankfully he has been present at training and is most certainly fit again, but we are a little puzzled as to his sudden return to prominence and equally sudden disappearance from it.

We understand he is not fully match fit, having barely played any significant football for a year, but equally that didn’t stop Stevie putting similarly-injured Ryan Jack straight into the firing line before the ex-Aberdeen man got injured twice. Thankfully he’s fit again too, but we wonder if Dorrans is genuinely in Gerrard’s plans or not.

The guy has a multitude of talent, and it’s hard to argue with anything the manager is doing right now – but if there’s one thing Rangers certainly lacked at Almondvale it was a lockpick, a player capable of opening up tight defences with truly visionary passing.

This is something Ovie Ejaria is capable of learning, but he is far from the final product and lacks experience, while Dorrans is almost 11 years his senior and has boatloads of the stuff.

Dorrans, from what he showed in Spain and v Tommy Wright’s lot, is a player capable of lifting Rangers to another level.

He is a very valuable option to have on the bench and is surely a genuine contender to start – it can’t be a fitness issue given the fact, as said, Stevie had no hesitation deploying Ryan Jack on his own return from long term absence; so we do hope to see more of Dorrans after the international break.

Rangers are a better prospect with him ‘in the zone’.
