“His finest night as a Rangers player” – Rangers player ratings v Rapid

Another truly incredible night of European football has come and gone at Ibrox Stadium, and without further ado, Ibrox Noise brings you our player ratings. Let’s get on with it:

Allan McGregor:

Didn’t actually have a lot to do, barely had a meaningful save to make in the 90 and his only disappointment was the goal, which wasn’t. Hard to fairly rate a goalie who had such a quiet night. 6

James Tavernier:

A colossal leading night from Tavernier who stepped up big time and produced a brilliant assist for the equaliser. This was a throwback to how he played for the first 10 matches under Stevie, where he seemed to get zoned in well to both attacking and defending – a few wayward freekicks, true, but overall when he’s in this kind of place, he’s an asset. Penalty was massive. 9

Connor Goldson:

This was Goldson back to his best – a quiet, unassuming but composed display in which he was a match for anything and read everything. Barely put a foot wrong all night. 8

Joe Worrall:

We have NOT been big fans of Worrall and were aghast at his name in the XI, but we got it wrong. He stopped up and showed what his reputation was all about. Absolutely nothing got past him and he made a tonne of big blocks and tackles. Has now made himself a legitimate and worthy choice for defence. 9

Jon Flanagan:

A bit like Goldson, quiet and unassuming. He’ll never offer what Barisic does down the left or his counterpart on the right, but he defends well – his only mistake was being exposed for an early chance which thankfully came to nothing. Solid and reliable. 8

Lassana Coulibaly:

By half time we still had concerns the pre-St Mirren Coulibaly was AWOL, albeit there had been some small improvement, but whatever Stevie said in the dressing room got the most out of the Malian and he was mountainous in the second 45. The Couli we’ve missed, he made a tonne of interceptions and was useful in supporting advanced midfield too. Top stuff. 8

Scott Arfield:

We love this guy, but this was not a good night for him. Guilty of a bunch of bad uses of the ball, and some really wayward moments, Arfield is a much better player than this showed him to be. 5

Ovie Ejaria:

A mixed night from Ejaria – while he was his usual composed self on the ball and had a number of his technical tricks to retain possession, he frequently got naively caught offside and some of his passing lacked intelligence. But that said a hell of a lot went through him and he’s had much worse nights.6

Ryan Kent:

A decent first half was followed up by a riotous second – we almost saw the Vienna defenders waving the white flag on account of him by around 80 minutes. When this lad is in the mood, he is only stoppable by fouling. Top stuff. 9

Daniel Candeias:

Some dodgy moments, sure, but this was a much better display from the Portuguese than we’ve seen recently. His trademark hard work was in abundance, and he peppered the box with balls. His assist for Morelos was the moment of Rangers’ European adventure so far. Genius. 8

Alfredo Morelos:

On nights like this we could kiss him. He was a torrent of work, and a complete menace to Rapid. Didn’t give them a moment’s peace, and scored twice while winning a penalty as well. His finest match as a Rangers player. 10

Steven Gerrard:

We didn’t agree with Katic being dropped again, and we were frustrated by the likes of Barisic and others on the bench, while Dorrans wasn’t even in the squad, but this is why Gerrard is the manager and we aren’t. His team was spot on, and they worked like dogs for their manager, fans and each other. While things were a little quiet at HT, this is the first interval in which we’ve really noticed a change in how the team played coming out for the second, and that’s down to what Gerrard said to them. He had a stinker against Livi, but this was the absolute rank opposite. 10

We’ll have more on this splendid night over the coming while, but this was another match to make us feel good. And we like those.

  1. Totally agree, Arfield was poor tonight which is a shame as the rest were outstanding. I think the Worral issue maybe communication with Barisic. With Flannigan to his left we seemed a lot tighter in defence. Maybe he's just finding his groove in the team. Is a shame for Katic as he has done nothing wrong. But with Hearts coming up fresh legs are required and I reckon Katic is better suited to SPL matches than Worral. Delighted with the effort and the crowd were amazing. Special mention to the Vienna fans. They bounced all night win, lose or draw a great bunch of people.

  2. Scott Arfield 5 ?
Not his best game but still did more that a 5 surly ? come on Ibrox noise stop being stingy!

  3. Agree re Candeias. That back heel was so good I can't find words for it. Made me feel the way Whittaker's run and goal did. Pure class. If Barca player had done that it would be all over football media.

  4. Fantastic Night to be a Bluenose!
