English side to launch January bid for Rangers defender (not Tavernier); reports

With the January window now seriously gathering momentum ahead of us, attention has turned to Rangers’ activity in the next block of transfers, and out-of-favour defender and former captain Lee Wallace, whose injury status is a topic of a great deal of contention, has emerged as a major target for Paul Cook’s Wigan Athletic according to the Sun, Daily Record and a number of other outlets, following The Latics’ capture of Rangers’ attacker Josh Windass earlier this year.

Despite Borna Barisic’s recent injury blow, we don’t anticipate Wallace being thrust back into the Rangers limelight any time soon regardless of only Jon Flanagan for cover, and expect instead Andy Halliday to deputise for the former Liverpool man as Rangers’ LB options.

The Latics would be unlikely to need to shell out a huge number for Wallace’s services, and the Scotland international is probably at a stage now where he would be happy to leave Ibrox and get his stuttering career back on some kind of track in League One.

Regardless of how he was treated pre-Steven Gerrard, and regardless of how we feel about that treatment, there is an acceptance now on our part that for all his loyalty and sacrifice to the club, Wallace’s time at Rangers is at an end and he is not going to have any significant role under Gerrard.

We would be happy enough if the man was honoured properly by Rangers and given the kind of send off disgracefully denied Kenny Miller, and if he is to leave for the DW in Wigan this January, that would be with our blessing.

Hopefully this will have a fair and morally decent ending.

  1. Would've loved to see him stay at the club, we owe him for his loyalty when we were down, I'd have big Lee over Flanagan and Halliday any day of the week

  2. Id have Him stay at the Club and play the LB slot as a Backup for Barisic.

Id have him in front of Flanagan for the LB slot every day of the week.

I will be Devastated to see him Leave Ibrox and To be Honest
…Id Rather See Him stay in Scotland, Maybe go to Someone like St Johnstone 🤔

  3. Let’s not get too teary eyed here. If Lee goes to Wigan (in the Championship btw) he’ll do very nicely financially and also get the chance to play at a consistently higher level than the SPL, albeit for a much smaller club. He’s earned our good wishes and I won’t forget some of the attacking displays with Barrie McKay down the left – it felt like a breath of fresh air at the time.
