Warburton signing has just made a huge mistake

A lot has been made of former number one Wes Foderingham’s comments in the presser yesterday, and while often we can see many sides to the argument whenever something ‘colourful’ arises, this one appears pretty black and white:

Wes Foderingham has completely disrespected Allan McGregor with the following utterance:

“I still see myself as the number one that’s not in the side at the moment.”

If we are to forcibly play devil’s advocate we could argue that he’s so used to being the first choice throughout his entire career (albeit not with clubs even half the size of Rangers) that this is new territory for him, and he even later admitted that it is new territory and it’s been strange.

But that said, what astounding arrogance to consider yourself the best goalkeeper at the club when the evidence is there in black and white that you’ve been upgraded considerably.

Of course, one has to have self-confidence and belief, but one has to have common sense too. Allan McGregor, in the eyes of many, is a borderline world class goalkeeper – Rangers’ best since Andy Goram (honourable mention to Klos) – and to say you still see yourself as the number one might even be something you think to yourself, but you DO NOT SAY IT.

The sad thing is everything else about Foderingham’s comments was much more humble, much more honest and fair and he complimented McGregor extensively – and we’d much rather praise him on taking this to the chin like a man and just getting on with it as he did for the rest of the presser.

But uttering those words about being the effective number one was foolish, misguided, disrespectful and should never have been included and undermined everything else he said.

  1. Should have been punted during the summer, ive never rated im, Jak should've been number 2, not this tosser who believes he is better than he is

  2. Surely these guys are told what to say by the club before they are put in front of the cameras, and all the club and manager are doing here is making sure AMcG knows there is a club No.1 keeper sitting on the bench waiting for his opportunity?
I don't rate Wes by the way at all, he is not a Rangers keeper and never will be (shouldn't even be in the same sentence as AMcG, Klos or Gorram), but the fact he has been the first choice for a number of years the club are using that to keep AMcG on his toes that's all, all other positions have competition and the keeper position should be no different.
I am sure when AMcG hangs up his boots one day, Wes would never be considered as the replacement, Wes will never be at his level.

    • As said in the article itself, the part that has "seemingly" caused a fuss was only a couple of sentences out of a whole lot. IF he was being nasty or disrespectful about McGregor then that would be a problem, but he didn't. Regarding the "bad comment"……. If I was the manager and I had a player believe things like that I would be worried…!!!

I agree. If a keeper doesn't think he is the best, if he settles for second, he is finished. He has to believe he is, or can be the best in order to do his job. I thought he walked the respect/self belief line quite well.

But also agree we should have sold him and kept Alnwick as backup.

  3. Wes is entitled, perhaps even duty bound,to make this claim. How happy would we be if he had said that he was prepared to sit back and be number two. Give the guy a break!

  4. Bit harsh. I want all our players believing they should be starting. Don't want anyone who's happy to sit on a bench and take the money.

  5. Show me a player at Rangers who doesn’t back himself to be the best in his position at the club and i’ll show you a player who shouldn’t be at Rangers.

Good stuff from Wes. Positive Mental Attitude. More power to his ‘elby’

  6. Nothing wrong with what he said. If you are going to make judgement on his comments then judge the whole of his interview, don't pick one selective sentence.
It would have been just as appropriate to pick the sentence where he said that there is no way McGregor could be dropped from the team given the level of his performances. That gives an entirely "perspective".

  7. He was always 50-50, for me. He made some amazing blunders between the sticks, last season. I feel much more comfortable with McGregor and i'm betting i'm not the only one. McGregor is night and day, above him. Was he as much of a "f*** up, as Cardoso? No. But he still made enough bad decisions last season, to cost us.

  8. wes is a great keeper he will take over rom mcgregor ,right now we need mcgregor experience ,what wes said is bang on r,t,i,d

  9. I still blame him for Scottish cup defeat to hivs he should have come out to punch the ball not stay on his line to let Gray score no1 tosser that all he is

  10. Wes should sit down and Shut Up. 😂

McGregor is a Far Better Keeper than Wes.
Jak is a Better Keeper than Wes.

We should Sell Foderingham and have Jak as McGregor's No.2 💪

    Have McGregor as No.1
And Have Jak and Robbie Fighting for No.2 Jersey, Then when Allan retires in a couple of Years, Make Jak No.1 and Robbie No.2 and Keep McGregor at the Club to be a Mentor to Robbie…and othet young goalies.

    😃👏⭕⚪🔴
