ROUNDUP: 8-0, an injury and a backside – Rangers players on international duty

As all football fans will know, the Nation’s League is underway in earnest causing the current international break, which, as an aside, is one of the few we ever welcomed here at Ibrox Noise.

Alas, there have been some mixed fortunes so far for Rangers players currently away with their countries and we’ll take you through the main ones.

Kyle Lafferty:

Unfortunately Kyle Lafferty may have sustained a nasty injury during his country’s defeat to Bosnia. After a second half tackle saw him sprawled on the turf in clear pain, boss Michael O’Neill had to withdraw him. We don’t yet have prognosis on recovery but his right knee appears to be the problem, and hopefully it won’t keep him out long, if at all. The Ulster boys face Israel tomorrow night and if Lafferty is on the bench we’ll be happy with that. Rather he isn’t risked for the sake of an effective friendly.

Ryan Jack:

Predictably, Jack was a substitute for Scotland at Hampden (albeit in a friendly and not the NL), and came on in the second half not only to predictable boos from the worst fans in world football, but it clearly disrupted him and he was caught napping in possession to cause a goal for Belgium. Not an evening Jack will remember with fondness.

Alfredo Morelos:

Alas it doesn’t get much better here either. After coming on as a late sub for Colombia, his much-lauded debut for his country saw an ‘assist’ via his backside and an open goal miss. We have covered this elsewhere so we won’t retread old ground.

Scott Arfield:

At last! GOOD NEWS. Scott not only starred for Canada during last night’s incredible 8 goal glut v the Virgin Isles, but he was captain too. It’s really no surprise – Arfield has, give or take, been Rangers’ most consistent and arguably best performer since he joined Ibrox – a true marquee performer who doesn’t let his side down. No injury, just a great captain’s display and Rangers really did get an absolute ‘bargain’ (he was a free) here.

Allan McGregor:

He didn’t feature v Belgium but is expected to start tonight’s clash with Albania. We would imagine he won’t concede four goals…

Eros Grezda:

In a match, incidentally, which won’t feature new signing Eros Grezda as the attacker was sent home from the Albania camp by boss Christian Panucci citing fitness concerns. Apparently the playmaker has been injured for the past four months, an injury sustained, ironically, on international duty with Albania.

Borna Barisic:

Another excellent display from the rising star of Croatian football, Barisic was outstanding against Portugal for the world cup finalists and his stock just keeps rocketing. This player was a complete bargain and we’re more than fortunate to have a world class left back again who might just be the best we’ve had there since Arthur Numan. He’s likely to start again tonight v Spain.

A mixed bag in there!

  1. I like Scott Arfield and am very happy he has come to Ibrox. But would have to disagree with " most consistent and arguably best performer " since arrival. Think Goldson, Katic, Barisic, Coulibaly and others may disagree. Think Shagger would treat comment as a joke:-) but may approach Arfield's wife 🙂
But glad to see him captian his country and get a better reception that poor Ryan Jack gets

  2. Barisic was excellent he doesn't look out of place in that kind of company I watched the game on holiday. Arfield is a proper professional like Gregsy .. I have commented about Jack and the whole Scottish thing it stinks ! Morelos was at least on the park he is an enigma Pity Gredza is not fit that would have been great to see him bang one in against that pish no disrespect to Big Eck he is just doing what they all are doing at the SFA Just Taking the Cash
