Fraser Aird to Borna Barisic

Fraser Aird to Borna Barisic

Only a few recent years ago, Rangers didn’t have a single credible international representative. That the best we could muster was Fraser Aird and his Canadian training camps was indicative of just how low we’d fallen.

Tonight Borna Barisic put in a fine display for the world cup finalists against the European champions.

How times have changed.

For Rangers to have a player who is now comfortably becoming part of one of the world’s best international squads, as opposed to a bit-part player who no longer features (Alves for Portugal) shows how far we’ve come in the past few months.

Fellow Croat Nikola Katic looks like he too will become part of the national squad before too long, and that speaks volumes about where Rangers are.

Yes, last Sunday’s Old Firm was a crippling disappointment, but anyone leaping on Gerrard’s back is being more than a touch shorted. He will make errors. He will make mistakes. He will get things wrong. But while the SPL start is not quite there yet, he has done far more good than bad.

And bringing in a world class Croat left back for a mere £2M really has to go down as one hell of a coup.

Meanwhile Gerrard also secured an Albanian international (ignore the headlines about their coach, we’ll cover that in another piece) while Ryan Jack and Allan McGregor are off with Scotland and Scott Arfield joined up with the Canada squad. Oh yeah, and our strikers are away with Norn Iron and Colombia.

It marks a quite incredible rise in the past six months to rare call ups to our players being highly-valued international commodities.

The Steven Gerrard era is simmering. We look forward to it boiling.

  1. Didn't get the negativity after last week whilst was wank we are night and day better than even last season. Patience please fellow bears one step at a time. It's coming

  2. I think ‘World Class’ Croat left back is going beyond the mark. He’s a good young player starting out his international career and we have a good’un on our hands. In years to come he could be worth a tight few bob too.

I watched him v Portugal and he performed well enough. Shit game all round but he squinted himself well.

Never mind an upgrade on Fraser Aird, who is a decent wee player, for me it’s a massive upgrade on Ricky fucking Foster !!
