Alfredo Morelos & Moussa Dembele

Alfredo Morelos & Moussa Dembele

If the pundits are to be believed, our eastern chums had a diabolical transfer window while our own was outstanding.

Quite frankly we can’t disagree with the latter and Boyata’s behaviour (hard to escape the column inches filled with it) along with the departure of Dembele probably backs up the former – albeit we only really follow Rangers so anything else is over our heads.

But that said it is intriguing to look at the subplot leading up to the Old Firm clash tomorrow – when Rangers were originally linked with Alfredo Morelos, we at Ibrox Noise suggested we may have found our Dembele – aka a hidden gem snapped up on a song who would become incredibly valuable.

Very similar strikers indeed – tonnes of ability, maybe questionable attitudes but game changers.

And the soap operas surrounding both last window were quite the watch and thoroughly compelling.

However, they have ended very differently – while one of the players was on social media melting down and making it clear he didn’t want to be in ‘paradise’ any more while deciding also not to bother with training, the other one buckled down and got on with the job of playing for his club (silly bookings notwithstanding) as his club rejected reported £3.75M then £7M+ bids from a clutch of clubs for his services.

Steven Gerrard frequently stated he had no interest in selling the Colombian international who goes from strength to strength, while his opposite number tried to claim the same thing about his boy but changed his mind at the last minute.

Gerrard made a sage point – no one could replace Morelos, not at this hour. And surely his adversary at the East End felt the same about his lad, and yet sold him anyway.

It makes for an intriguing plotline going into Sunday – Celtic simply couldn’t hold onto their best player, while Rangers rejected millions for theirs.

The pundits say Celtic are much weaker for this window (they couldn’t even do anything with the money they made from him), while Rangers are much stronger.

It’s hard to argue with much of that. But the proof of the pudding of Rangers’ progression and Celtic’s regression will be on the pitch tomorrow early afternoon.

  1. Agree with much of it, but to be honest when you say they couldn't do much with the money they made for him, I disagree.
Very roughly, CL brings them £30 large a year. Europa brings £10 large. They made a profit last year, but I think only a few million.

So they are down £20 large and sell Mutton Dembele for, guess what, £20 large.

They have done something with the money, they have kept the lights on. King Saud a couple if minths ago that their model was predicated on CL football and if they missed a year they would be in trouble. They have missed but covered it this year. Wait and see if we win the league, they will have to tighten their belts. A lot.

    • Am I for real? Yes, I am. Are you real? After all, you share the same name as many Celtic fans who visit this forum. Mind you, maybe that is because your and your Mum both call the father daddy.
If you want to see how grownups debate, tell me how much profit Celtic made last year. Then how much they got from Champions League. Can you count that high on your fingers, or does the webbing stop you spreading them that far?

  2. Yes, of course the similarities are apparent.
The hope, though, should surely be that the last minute departure of the vastly over-rated Dembelle will cause a level of disruption within the soap-dodger ranks ahead of the game tomorrow.
I often get a 'feeling' ahead of an OLD FIRM fixture, but this one seems to offer few clues as to how it will pan out, on the back of the level of new signings and confusing media subterfuge…
Having said that, if Alfredo pokes a controversial last minute winner off the back of his kneecap, I will personally fund a statue in his honour.

  3. Hardly a disaster for celtic tbh. Last season dembele was out with an injury n boyata has always been crap. Let's no play up to Rodgers excuses. same team as last year. New for us. Let's just see how far we have come

  4. Even if we don't win tomorrow, or win the title, it's over, for them. I can see Brendan parting ways with Celtic, pretty soon if funding is still slow to appear, for next January. The pressure is on them and they've become lax. We've grown hungrier, by the season. Their day is upon them and they know that when we win the league, it's all over. They'll be back to being also-rans. Sooner or later.

  5. I predicted that this was brendas last season dembele is the start of the downfall🕺🕺🕺
Football's coming home its coming home its coming home football's coming home💪

    Morelos is not for sale🚫

    LETS GO WATP 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧

  6. Its all up in the air just now.
Stevie G seems to be sorting things out at a good rate, but we are still a work in progress….lets not get carried away.
The beggers are still getting the overall results they need, but there is definitely unrest in their ranks…..and we could be about to turn their season on its head.
Bottom-line is we are definitely heading in the right direction.

  7. Don't start celebrating too early chaps. Let's see what happens tomorrow.

On the Dembele front, Celtic got a great return. I also believe that Rangers would have accepted a fee of £19M for Morelos – and rightly so.

    • Ket,

I agree, we would take £19M for Morelos and I think they did very well to get that much for Dembele. But the manner of his leaving will not have helped their state of mind. Doubts may be appearing

  8. inwardly rodgers probably thnking, i've taen them as far as i can. secretlty even he must know 10 is not on, Their playes probaby know they cannae acheive the levels of the last two seasons, more so now that we and other clubs continue to improve and the fear factor is going. And it's all thanks to us as others try to keep up, some things never change eh!
