The value of Josh Windass

The value of Josh Windass

According to reports, Ipswich Town have submitted a £2M bid for Josh Windass.

Windass, who has been out of favour recently despite seeming pre-season to be very much part of Steven Gerrard’s plans going forward, has been a slightly divisive figure during his time at Ibrox, blowing hot and cold, but did work hard for the team on Sunday in the face of accusations of shirking responsibility.

But we remain a little puzzled by Gerrard’s handling of him; and we did consider whether wasting him on the right then dropping might not be detrimental to his market value. As a young English forward with a fair old whack of potential and lots of goals, Windass’ theoretical value should be in the region of £4M.

So Town’s bid is surely below the value we’d expect for the ex-Accrington man, but then would we expect them to come straight in at his proper fee?

Pre-season Windass did seem to be an integral part of the side, but being played on the right before being axed has put a different complexion on things, albeit he returned for Pittodrie.

The ultimate question is are Rangers a better team with him in the side?

On either flank, no. It’s that simple. If Gerrard is going to play with wide men and no number 10, as is currently the case with the 4-3-3, there is just no place for Windass to be deployed most effectively.

If Gerrard is going to use a central number 10, then yes, Windass could have a role to play given Rangers only really have him and Ovie Ejaria for that position.

The 4-1-4-1 seems to have been axed, but oddly enough there was space in that formation for a 10 – and it went to Daniel Candeias while Windass was wide.

Your guess on that one is as good as ours.

We do suspect though if a good enough bid comes in, Windass will be expendable. Rangers still need a striker, and with Alfredo Morelos similarly the subject of interest from various clubs, the sooner the better that we have funds to invest in one.

  1. He's got good pace, energy and he can score but it's his final decision making that's letting him down,he would rather try and score through a crowded box than play in one of his team mates in a better scoring position, don't know if S G can sort that part of his game out or not but that's what frustrates me about him.

  2. Windass, Morelos and Murphy also, none of them are of the Class of player needed to stop the filth getting their 8th.Then we put Docherty, possibly the better option as an attacking mid, out on loan.
Seems to me then that we are still making silly mistakes here ?
C'mon Steven Gerrard, it was You after all who came out with em words, 'Let's Go', so yes indeed, Let's get better quality for striker Alfredo is not gonna be the answer.

  3. Far too inconsistent to be a starter and between 2-3m is too much to knock back for a squad player.

  4. I can't vote without knowing the price. Ipswich paid £250,000 for Waghorn and are looking at £5 million plus. So we massively undervalued him.
Windass is a better player than Waghorn, he has more variety and goals in him (doesn't take pens). So at £2M, no thanks. At £4M, meh, not really. At £5M, ok then. With a sell on. In fact, as I said to a Hibbee today re McGinn, £4M with 20% sell on is better than £5M w a 10% sell on. If they make it, you share in the profit.
Third top scorer in SPL last season remember.

  5. Consider what we paid for him I think we’re getting w good deal. He’s not a team player and his attitude toward the fans has been shocking. He’s a bad apple who think he’s something and I can’t wait to see the back of him

    • Why should we set his value relative to what we paid for him rather than market value like every other club. The English Championship is awash with money and Ipswich have just taken a huge sum for rank average Martin Waghorn who they got from us for £250,000 in case you've forgotten. The figure for Windass is actually being quoted as £1.4m and is a joke. If Ipswich want him they obviously value him so this time make them pay top dollar. At £1.4m we'd be as well holding onto him.

  6. Agree no point in playing him wide left or wide right, proved last season can get goals as a number 10 as they seem to call it nowadays, there or don't play him.

  7. I would only sell if the player didn’t want to stay. If he wanted to stay and stake a claim for a start by producing the goods then we would have a player with ability, physicality and pace in the locker. He struggles to influence games. If he fancies the championship then fine, we should be looking for £5M. (See Garner, Waghorn)

None of us know for sure about any clause or wording of his contract.

  8. Whether we want to keep him or not, doesn't affect his value.
If the third top goal scorer in Scotland is only worth £2 million, it is time to shut the league down and disband the national team because we cannot compete with a country that will spend £75 million on a centre back.

OR, we can accept that whatever we think of a player, he is worth what someoen will pay for him and in England they will pay a lot. It seems pointless to complain about people and want them out the door for a pittance, then moan because we have no money to buy people much better.

People who want to sell Windass for £2 Million should tell us who to replace him with given Waghorn costs £6-9 Million.

  9. Id be looking for £3.5/£4mill Minimum! 👍
Its time we moved him on

The direction the club is moving now…we cant have a hot/cold player 🤔

  10. IN, SORT, this website out. I go to type in comments, the page moves up or down. You have too many ads, making the page go up and down. Sort it out, please. Ipswich are blatantly, taking liberties because of what happened, to our club. They wouldn't offer 2M, if it was anybody else. Hard NO them and let them know, we won't be insulted.

    • Smart TV browsers are horrific – barely functional. We'll try to figure out the issue here though.

    • Think it's down to device. My iPad loads fairly quickly so it's less of an issue. Laptop is different though and takes much longer to load ads etc through Chrome. That's where the "jumping around" comes from. And it's not just Ibrox Noise.
