Steven Gerrard has revealed a surprising aspect of his management

There is no denying Rangers’ system today was perhaps not the most optimal choice for the match. While the side nearly creeped away from Fir Park with all three points, the defence was vulnerable through the entire encounter and there are significant doubts the 3-5-2 was the right system for this match and the personnel we actually have.

Steven Gerrard is only three months into his Rangers career and praise for his management and team displays has been far and wide. He remains unbeaten, and we can’t take too much fault with his start at Ibrox, but today he revealed an aspect of his management as yet hidden and one we admire:

Humility.

Gerrard has done little but spoken well, made good choices, set good teams out and got the results.

Today he failed to fully do that, and when asked about the curious decision to bring Lee Wallace on at the final set piece, his logic was sound but his ability to take responsibility welcome and present:

“They had four or five big units on there then I have a defender sitting behind me who is 6ft 3in, and with all due respect to Ovie Ejaria – and he was good today – Lee Wallace is a lot better at defending set-pieces. That was the thinking behind it. If I’ve got it wrong I’ll take the blame, no problem.”

We completely accept his explanation, even if he said only a few days ago that Wallace was weeks away from being ready to actually play, but it’s the fact he’s willing to hold his hands up and say he got something wrong which we admire.

It took Pedro months to ever be willing to finally accept blame for his mistakes, and Warburton never did. Gerrard is new on the job and learning. He will make errors. And making a substitute at a late set piece with a rusty player to hold onto a lead was an error.

His willingness to accept that is admirable, and speaks volumes for the respect he has for our club – that he doesn’t blame others, doesn’t deflect things – and that for us is a big thumbs up.

    • Correct and we respect his decision end of move on💪
      NEXT!

      LETS GO WATP 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧

  1. Absolutely Class! 👌
And sure dropping 2pts isnt ideal but we are still unbeaten and we havent played any of the teams above us yet 😃👊

  2. That was my point n previous post, we will have setbacks on occasions but have been really unfotunate in conceding two last chance efforts at the death in games we could and should have won.we will get better there's no doubt.

  3. I must be missing something here,he said IF i got it wrong I'll take the blame,no problem, he got wrong along with his formation full stop, unbeaten but already playing catch up…..watp helicopter 2005

    • What part of the equaliser was Lee Wallace culpable? Maybe you should take over the formations of our team from now on. Then we can all sit back and win everything we go for until the end of the century. We came within a second of what would have been a very good win in atrocious conditions which Motherwell thrived on, but hey, why bother with fact over fiction.

    • Laugh at what? What you talking aboot?I'm still laughing at the disco lights crack Mutton came away with.

  4. He tried to take the sting out of the momentum they had built up, quieten their fans who were roaring them on and it blew up in his face.It gave them time for a breather and to really concentrate on getting a perfect ball into the box, whereas a rushed corner in the spur of the moment would have been defended.I fully believe that. McGregor should've come for it too as it was in the six yard box,he wasn't impeded so he's got to get something on it.Goldson will learn from today as he was thrown off by the physical side of the game,he's used to playing football after all. That's not football but we have to deal with it.Another CH preferably one who's utterly dominant in the air would be extremely welcome for such games and we're 3-4 bodies short squad wise too. When we beat Ufa on Thursday I expect us to sort out at least 3 more because we'll need them. Units would be preferable.

    • Totally agree but would also add that Gerard has to act quickly to get these players in before the window shuts and not wait/rely on us getting through against UFA as we need more stronger physical players to have any chance of winning the league

  5. It may come as a surprise to some on this site that we might not go through the season without dropping points. To do so at grounds like Pittodrie and Fir Park is no real surprise as even the best Rangers teams have lost there. It's also likely that we will lose next week at the San Giro. That doesn't make us a bad team or Gerrard a bad manager. It just means we were dealt a particularly difficult set of opening fixtures. The aim will be to turn around all these results when they come to Ibrox. Do that and we won't be far away.

  6. Id bring in 2 more Centre-Backs
Liam Lindsay & Either McAuley or Kaboul

Id Also Bring in another Striker as we cant be too Reliant on Alf and Laff and Sadiq hasnt cut it for me

And as for the Jamie Murphy Issue
    Two Words …Glenn Middleton!

Also was thinking about this one the other week also,

How Many of you Fellow Rangers Fans would be for/Against Bringing Back Lewis McLeod? 🤔
    Had His Problems at Brentford
    Still Fairly Young
    Still A Lot of Potential
Could be the Cheap no.10 we are looking for
And i think under the teachings of Stevie & Gary …He could be made a player again! 😁👌

    • We've already got Rossiter camping out in the treatment room. McLeod was a good wee player but you can't trust him to stay fit.Not knocking the boy it's just how it is.

    • Rossiter is a Walking/Talking Injury, Hes Constantly Injured.

      McLeod is Not

Can stay fit for Longer than Rossiter 👍

I think if the price was right he'd be worth a punt.

  7. I now have great faith in SG. He’s shown he can adapt and learn. The last 2/3 managers couldnt do that. We need to go through in the next Euro round, and use the cash in Croatia to fortify the squad. Otherwise It will continue to be a white knuckle ride.

  8. I think Well are way to physical and bully, their way to goals, but will take it on the chin. Sickened at us conceding at the death, like we did on countless occasions, last season.

    • joe, it reminded me of an f.a. cup tie where the minnwos throw the kitchen sink at it as they've nothin tae lose. seems irrelevant, but will watch with interest when mrs. browns boys turn up with that defence.

    • There are many ways to win football matches and Motherwell have found the way that suits them. Nothing wrong with that. The officials are there to make sure they don't overstep the mark and I don't think they did. We showed great character in the first half but didn't turn up in the second. That's where the manager will be turning his attention, not at the way Motherwell choose to play their football.
Having said that get your money on whoever Motherwell play this weekend because they are unlikely to put so much effort into the next match.

  9. Don't think the formation was the problem, the goals we lost were avoidable, the first one goldston slipped, the other two were caused by our so called right back going to sleep, AGAIN, everybody else can see it and I think it wont be too long before its rectified.

  10. Interesting on the third goal – had Fod been in the team, he would have been slaughtered for not commanding his box. I like Greegsy but I’d have been upset if my missus had performed like that – the ball was never more than 3 yards away from the line.

  11. It is evident that we are stronger with a back four,i beleive against celtic in paricular barisic and tav would give us more threat and protection moved forward in front of a back four of wallace katic goldsn and flanagan. with arfield and jack the other 2 in the middle, stck with morelos and laff up top if borna and tav can deliver deadly balls. It also gives the option of throwing on candieas and middleton for the last half hour to run at their defence and continue to get crosses in for laff while alfresco pulls them out of position.

  12. if you hold your hands up and take responsiblty that will do for me and players should be able to see out 3 minutes we had the ball four times and gave it away
