Steven Gerrard and those ‘crass’ comments…

Watching the media reaction to Steven Gerrard’s post-match interview yesterday has been, frankly, comedy gold.

Gerrard, rightly, stated the absolute facts that Rangers were the better team by far yesterday afternoon and a class above their opponents.

This was truly Souness-esque arrogance at its best and every fan to a man woman and child loved it – Gerrard defended us, he defended his men, and he stated the beliefs we have – we should be a class above Aberdeen – pretty much always have been, always will be, 80s respite notwithstanding. Even the guff Pedro teams were able to beat Aberdeen, despite them being the ‘best of the rest’ in Scotland.

Once we got our act sorted, it was only a matter of time before the traditional superiority appeared on the pitch formally again.

Yesterday it did. Rangers destroyed Aberdeen, held their forehead a mile away as the Dons struggled to muster any threat at all. A lax piece of defending and the one sole piece of quality they’d produced the whole 96 (6, really?) minutes stole them the point, but anyone who disputed Gerrard’s words was watching a different match to the rest of us.

There were complaints too about ‘everything goes against Rangers’ – well it’s about flipping time a Rangers manager said it.

See, the difference between Gerrard and the rest is Gerrard’s judgement within football has never been called into question. He’s a respected icon of the game, one of the best British players over the past 20 years, and so when even he calls the anti-Rangers sentiment in Scotland for what it is, Scotland falls all over itself to be offended.

It’s not a nobody like Pedro or Warburton saying it – it’s Steven Gerrard. Suddenly those words carry more weight because he’s an outsider – in time we hope he’ll fully become one of us, if he hasn’t already, but initially he was neutral. And if he has the guts to call this out, it’s less easily dismissed.

Remember when Scottish football went insane over Brendan Rodgers’ comments about the pitch at Tynecastle? When he whined about their ‘gamesmanship’? No, of course you don’t, because it didn’t.

But when Rangers make a complaint, it’s a different story.

Gerrard is starting to truly walk the walk now – he talked a lot, but the results, performances and rhetoric now is just starting to look a tad Rangers esque. The Journey is nowhere near finished, but it’s further along than it’s been since 2012.

  1. I'm not into the paranoid conspiracy theories but I can see why people are thinking that way.

Massive difference between coverage by English media and Scottish media.

    • Paranoid conspiracy theories really, did you see the game yesterday?
Morelos sent off after defender shoulder barged him, no card for defender, Windas pulled down in box no card for Ball, Katich has ball thrown at him not card for GMS and he wasnt just passing the ball to him before you say anything, May goes through Jack to get the ball, Jack ends up in hospital because of it no card for May, do we need to go??

    • Bang on, that mutant GMS made 3/4 yellow card offences, pretty sure he tries to elbow Katic before hitting him with the ball. Somebody landing on your neck at that speed without a booking is laughable. I know its a contact sport, but theres contact and theres barging into people at full speed on their blindside. Jacks probably got whiplash after that, potential spinal injury, no protection at all.

  2. Steven Gerrard only said what every real Rangers fan have said since the whole Big Tax Case Etc Etc has been going on The SPFL the SFA the whole of Scottish Football hates Rangers we are treated totally different to the rest especially the Rotten Mob who continue to manipulate and influence the whole process. When we win the League the Silence will be deafening !!!!!!! Onwards

    • It goes back a lot further than that, remember what happened to souness when he came here or even gazza,as soon as we get a big name in it's okay a big time Charlie we'll sort you out,it's about time somebody highlighted this,if that happened to that other lot that ref would never be seen again.

  3. like you said IN its about flipping time….we have been hit with dodgy calls for far too long

yes morellos did have kick albeit ive seen worse from my 8 year old son but he did and he has given the ref a decision to make. Why mckenna wasnt booked for the 2 off the ball barges for no reason is beyond me.

Gerrard has only said what each one of us is thinking, the standard of refs in this country is already bad but they go to new leaves every one of our games because no one likes us but this has to stop with the refs because its killing us and the scottish game as a whole.

Im very impressed with how Gerrard handled himself, passion, control, actual facts and not the Warburton we had this many corners and all these shots pish but actual facts that not only defended us but showed that we are a class above aberdeen and I for one have no fear at all for the remaining games against them as i truly believe we will kick on from the dissapoinment of the 2 lost points and truly start to show that we are rangers again.

also quick side note… Mcinnes said his team got nothing more than they deserved…im sorry but any team with a 1 man afvantage from the start of a game that struggle to register a single shot at goal until the 3rd minute of injury time would never be looked at as deseving, im so happy he didnt become our manager 😆 could you imaging 🙈

    WATP 💙❤💙

  4. As if we are not getting enough flak we now have 3 ex rangers men mouthing at us,when do you ever hear that other lots ex players criticising them…..never.

  5. I agree with Kris Boyd. Getting nipped and your toes stood or even a bit shoulder barging are all part and parcel of a fiesty fixture. Morellos should not only have known better and avoided reacting, he should also have had a word with the referee and linesman and pointed out McKenna's actions. Highlighting what was going on would have resulted in putting McKenna under pressure and afforded Morellos some freedom. Being such a vital game at such a vital time, I think that should be the last time we see Morellos start a game for a very long time, hopefully he never plays again. As bad as the refereeing was, we need more from a Rangers striker. It was a clear red card for Ball for his pull on Windass, and Stevie May should have been booked at the very least for his follow through on Jack. I also agree with Mr Gerrard, far too many decisions go against Rangers. The Penalty claim versus Celtic and Morellos dubious offside decisions against Celtic stick in my mind. Hopefully, highlighting this makes for some positive refereeing for us in future and maybe sets up some bad decisions against Celtic at Tynecastle (I doubt it). I also feel that we should have been able to hold on for just three more minutes. After such overwhelming performances and excellent workrate, we really let ourselves and Mr Gerrard down. Windass surely cannot start again, where was Candeias? If he was rested with a view to Thursday's game that is ridiculous. A winning start in the league was extremely important and he would have offered more than Windass. Glenn Middlelton not coming on and Kent getting time instead is starting to annoy me already. Great stuff promoting Middleton to the first team, but he has to be utilised. If we have an obligation to play Kent, we should never have taken him, he is nowhere near Harry Wilson and in my opinion offers less than Middleton. At least Glenn tries to beat his man and hit the byline. Mr Gerrard needs to be careful using Kent as it could sour relations, either that or Kent has to do what he is expected to and perform and score goals. One more chance he has for me and then his place is lost in my opinion. Umar Sadiq, we need you to be awesome and we need you to be it now.

    • Crazy decision bringing on kent/ejaria when mccrorie/candeis surely would have been better options, would have preffered middleton too but he wasn't even on the bench for some reason

    • I agree it may be part and parcel of the game but I would expect to get punished if caught. Physical contact on an opponent when the ball is nowhere in sight must be punished. Doing so to purposefully provoke a reaction must be bringing the game into disrepute. If he's not punished it gives the green light for players to do whatever they want off the ball.

    • A lot of good points, well put. 2 others stood out, Candeias. He’s a tryer but he doesn’t have the quality. Work ain’t enough. There’s guys there wanting the shirt that also bring work and more quality.
Middleton. He’s a young raw laddie. His time will come. For me he’s not a starter. SG & GMac will know when he’s ready. Put him on when we’have wrapped games up. We’ve ruined enough boys with expectation & pressure, give this laddie a chance.

    • Fair points regarding Middleton and Candeias. I agree, but in the absence of the signing of another creative midfielder and an attacker, I would rather use those two than Morellos and Windass, thats the point I was trying to make really. If there were alternatives then guarding the young careers of Middleton would be wise. Candeias showed against Osijek that he has a new level of graft in his game under Gerrard, I was very very impressed and should he continue in that vein i think he could be the one good thing to have come from Pedro (sort of, he's hardly fucking Laudrup).

    • The old saying is if you're good enough you're old enough. What are we saving Middleton for? If he turns out to be the real deal he'll be down the road in double quick time so let's use him now while we have him. And as far as Im aware he came to us on an 18 month contract 7 months ago. Is there any news on a contract renewal.

  6. Well said Stevie G. The whole pub stood to applaud. I'm also disgusted at former players like Steven Thompson and Billy Dodds for criticising him for what he said.
Incidentally, when asked on Sportscene Thompson couldn't even bring himself to consider Rangers had any chance to win the League this season. They are certainly favourites and we probably won't but for a former Rangers player to completely dismiss their chances out of hand was shameful. I expect that from the Ginger Fanny sitting next to him but not from a former player.

  7. I have always said, it's not the opposition we need to worry about this season,,it's the match officials. It was blatant cheating by the officials yesterday, there was an obvious agenda to ruin our chances to win the game. Hard on Rangers, easy on the opposition, absolutely disgraceful decisions by the linesman and referee. And it won't stop there this season.
Our team were warriors yesterday at 10 men, if Morelos stay on the park, it was going on 4-0 easily. Well done to Gerrard coming out and defending us and saying how it is, after all, it's only the facts he was conveying!! BRING,,,IT,,,F*CK*NG,,,ON!!!

  8. Great to hear our manager say it the way he sees it. Warns or Murty woulda issued an apology to their CB and backed the ref. They would have been feart to say owt else.

On ye go Stevie, take no shite.

  9. enjoyed the read must go find the interview. i dont always complain IN!
    GRIT (Get Rite Intae Them)!!

  10. Absolutely Spot on from our Manager!
    About Time someone called it!

The Difference is Stevie G isnt scared to Tell it like it is!

    And Boyd/Thompson …GTF
You are no longer Welcome at Ibrox!

  11. Some weird stuff yesterday but the weirdest was the May incident. Watch it again – that would have led to an assault charge in the street. And watch Jacks reaction – no way he wanted to stay down. That's what I want to see in our players – proper steel.

  12. Stevie is trying to create a siege mentality and use this as a source of inspiration for players and fans alike. Sir Alex was a master at this.

Scott Arfield made a comment yesterday which basically said "even if you dont believe in all the comments, a siege mentality can be powerful"

I doubt Gerrard really believes what he said but the mind games are afoot and we as supporters should follow his lead

  13. Now it is time to show it on the pitch week in week out we know we are better than ten and can beat that ten home and away so lets beat Selltic more than they beat us then the cups and the big prize the League is ours,we are a better team than them now we will never be turned over like last season with them lets do it and win win win.
