Does multimillion pound Rangers bid explain huge summer Ibrox deal?

Today’s breaking news from the Express that Brighton are set to make a bid for James Tavernier sheds significant light on the signing of Borna Barisic.

The EPL outfit have been monitoring the ex-Newcastle fullback for months and Rangers are presumably aware of it – assuming the bid is good enough, and we’d imagine several million will be required, and the club captain will move on.

While Tavernier was indeed promoted to captain only a number of weeks ago, the signing of Barisic on top of Jon Flanagan for the left back berth was more than a touch puzzling – as Ibrox Noise covered yesterday.

While we want as many good players as we can get, regardless of position, this one did seem curious given the scenarios it threw up with regards Barisic, Flanagan and Tavernier’s selection.

But if a good bid for Tavernier arrives, and the deal is agreeable to the fullback, the EPL might just be too much of a lure and it would completely resolve the selection issue while explaining just why Steven Gerrard secured another top class left back.

England’s transfer window shuts tomorrow, so any bid for the 26-year old would have to be pretty swift, but we equally wonder who would replace him as captain.

More as we get it on this one.

  1. Could you tell me what happens if Tav does leave ?who would be used as cover for the left back position for our eurorean campaign,Barisic cannot be used untill the group stages.

    • We have currently six left backs on the books. Barisic, Flanagan, Halliday, John, Hodson and Wallace. Departures notwithstanding, we think we have cover!

    • My understanding is that Hodson has gone, John is injured, Wallace is also unfit, Barasic cannot play in Europe… which for Europe would leave Halliday if Flanigan is playing right back? Not ideal!

  2. I don’t believe the manager will be happy to let Tav go. The cash would need to be significant, I’d guess £5M+

I’m not sure Tav himself would be interested in Brighton.

  3. Flanagan for RB …
    Back up : Tavernier

    Barisic for LB
    Back Up : John/Wallace

If the Money is Right, Sell Him! 👍

    • So if the money isn't right, keep him on the bench behind a player who stunk the place out at Bolton last season. We can then watch his value fall and lose a significant attacking threat. Hope Mr Gerrard has thought of this……
