“A true Rangers-level player” – player ratings for Rangers v Maribor

Another amazing 90 minutes is over, yet another non-defeat. Ibrox Noise comes at you with some player ratings for yet more success on the pitch.

Allan McGregor.

Wow, he’s been in staggering form up till now but last night was a new level. He is quite simply an even better goalie than the one who left. His penalty save was remarkable, and at least two or three other stops were simply world class. 10

James Tavernier.

Continuing to pay proper attention to defensive responsibility – it does seem Stevie has ironed out his careless attacking and abandoning of post, and now he gets forward responsibly and times his defending properly. It’s much better from him. 8

Connor Goldson.

Just absolutely slept through another match. How good is this guy? We have zero hesitation saying he’s as good as Carlos Cuellar. 9

Nikola Katic.

Was beaten a bit easily for one header and carelessly let another through pass get the better of him as well, but even on a slightly weaker night by his standards he was still very, very good. 8

Andy Halliday.

Did basically nothing wrong and acquitted himself well. A useful utility player to have and a much better option than the only other possibility at LB Lee Hodson. 7

Ryan Jack.

Picked up where he left off from Aberdeen – a couple of stray passes aside, his performance was again exactly what he can do. Lots of brilliant defensive reading, and hard working midfield graft. More and more he’s looking a true Rangers level midfielder. Brilliant. 9

Scott Arfield.

His maturity, leadership and experience are counting for so much – leads men around him, and his touch and use of the ball is excellent. Not a flashy player, but an inspiring and hard working one. Another great display. 8

Ovie Ejaria.

We remain a little confused as to why he’s playing in a position he’s not very comfortable in, but he did try hard and worked to press the ball. He’s just not being played to his strengths and it’s the one query we’d have of Stevie’s selection. 6

Daniel Candeias.

Not a standout night for the Portuguese but a graft one where he worked hard in the middle. He wasn’t much going forward but supported defence as usual. Solid 7

Jamie Murphy.

A completely different display to all those recently – this was Murphy as a team player – no silly aimless dribbles, just good hard work, closing and pressing, useful link play and some fine interceptions. His best display under Gerrard by a distance. 8

Alfredo Morelos.

Quit the offside nonsense – he missed yet another comical sitter. And yet otherwise it was a decent display from him – his form is definitely looking good, and one thing we’ll have to accept about Morelos, assuming he stays – he will miss glaring chances, and he will still occasionally forget to be a team player, but mostly last night it was the good side of him. 7

Steven Gerrard.

Somehow he’s got it. He’s got the gift of getting players to give their all and then some. Tactically  his system is spot on, and there’s plenty of flexibility and fluidity in the setup, and players work hard to maintain the shape. The defence is looking great, midfield is working brilliantly, and even attack isn’t a complete disaster either, just maybe lacking depth. He has nailed every competitive match so far, even if all the displays haven’t been 100% impeccable. Game management under this guy has been imperious and that was the case again last night. 10

  1. Totally disagree with McGregor only getting a 10. Manlove
Big shout out to Halliday, how many goals did he cost us? None. Worked like a dog, as did most of them. Centrebacks? Awesome, just need injury cover. James Collins, or similar?
Jack, Arfield and Coulibaly, I feel greedy at having them all. Its not fair on the rest of Scotland.
Morelos should be drug tested, he gets through so much work. Needs to channel it a bit more. But made a phenomenal chance for, I think, Murphy with a pass anybody would have been proud of. Needs more and better support.
Murphy was decent, as you say worked hard. Candeias too. Ejaria meh. But the three need to support Morelos more and score some goals. We sold a lot of goals when Windass left, they haven't been replaced. Let's not regret that.
Manager? SG? Not bad for a rookie, eh Speirs?

    • Credit where credit is due , Halliday came in and had a solid performance. As you said the other day a good utility/squad player. He looked overjoyed at the final whistle so i will get off his back for a while :). Thought Morelos was solid yet again, the guy is a machine. He holds the ball, wins freekicks and generally a pain in the ar5e for most opposition. Wow just wow shagger A++

  2. Couldn't disagree with anything in this article. I'm glad you rated Gerrard but 1 thing I want to mention…I commented last season on how there was no communication between manager and his staff during games? What a difference, Gary mac is never slow in having a word with Gerrard anytime he picks up on something he's not happy with. Also Michael Beale seems to be in constant dialogue. Absolutely love it, gives me confidence that Stevie has great support and they are working as a team! Gerrard, Gary Mac and MB- 10/10
