What does Steven Gerrard need to do?

 Article by: Richard

Ibrox Noise is disappointed at the start that Rangers have made this season, and he is not alone. I don’t think he is being over critical, he tells it as it is – no fake news here! He merely writes down what 99% of us are already thinking, and he has the guts to go with it.

Similarly Steven Gerrard was brutally honest in his own summation of the team’s performance, or lack of it!

Ibrox Noise suggested yesterday that the players that were at Rangers last year were the same ones that failed to impress this season, and he is right. The best players on view were McGregor, Goldson, Katic, Flanagan plus Ejaria and Middleton when they eventually came on.

Scott Arfield was sorely missed due to his knee injury and loan signings Lassana Coulibaly and Umar Sadiq were not fully fit and ineligible to play following their respective loan moves from Angers and Roma.

Therefore, Gerrard was more or less forced to go with a limited and similar pool in the two Europa Cup matches. They are possibly fitter than last year, but the talent of last season’s players doesn’t seem to have increased. Stevie must play everybody in their right positions – Candeias and Windass!

We didn’t have Rossiter, Wallace or Dorrans available through injury, but there is no guarantee that they would have performed any better. Although I really rate young Rossiter as a player, but he’s never fit.

Sadiq and Coulibaly are still working hard to become fully fit and the sooner they are available the better Rangers should be. According to Gerrard, the two of them are two weeks off the fitness required to start games, and they may not be ready for the next Europa away tie which is a week today.

What is missing from the present starting XI we’ve witnessed for the Bury friendly and the two cup ties? The forward players have certainly been the most disappointing by continuing to miss too many chances. Their heading ability needs loads of work done on the training pitch for a start.

A genuine midfield maestro wouldn’t go amiss with this young team to feed off either, but he will cost us millions for the right player, and we may not have the money to spend right now.

From what I have witnessed so far with Gerrard’s new team, I would start with the young Liverpool star, Ejaria who is looking comfortable playing for the ‘Gers and feel that he could improve the team and become a fixture.

Gerrard must also sign a first class attacker who will cost us a few bob, but it is necessary if we are to win trophies this season. We only have Morelos, Sadiq who is a loan signing and young Rudden at the club at the moment.

It is a work in progress and hopefully we start to see the fruits of that labour in due course.

  1. I don't know why any manager has never started Tav in midfield. He spends most of the games there so why not free him up with Flanagan and John as the fullbacks. Ryan Jack or Ross McCrorie, Ovie Ojaria and Arfield can take the other midfield slots with Murphy and Morelos up front. Morelos definately needs someone to play off so the sooner the big lad Sadiq is fit the better. Morelos definately needs an attitude adjustment but I still feel he can do a job for us.

  2. Incredibly surprised to hear Stevie say he’s not currently looking at strikers, but will if he has too! That I find bizarre, you don’t have to be Mourinho to see this team is screaming out for a center forward, either to give Morelos serious competition as the lone striker or a strike partner for him, as he clearly isn’t up to it and hasn’t been for a long time. Even with Sadiq it’s nowhere near enough quality, for a club like Rangers to be challenging for multiple trophies. I have said it so many times on here I’m starting to bore myself, but we really need to be looking at strikers or I suspect another long season of frustration!

  3. Tav is not a Rangers Captain as he’s far from an automatic starter for me. Flanagan is a better right back by miles but he’s only a stop gap fill in on the left. He should be on his natural side with Dec John the best LB we have.

What does he need to do ? Quite simply, get players in attacking positions with much higher qualities.

His idea of playing Murphy in the middle with Windass wide left is baffling to say the very least. Candeias may be a worker but his pace, aggression and technical abilities fall way short of what we need in a title winning side.

….and of course he must play hardball and shake off the likes of Halliday and a few others who just don’t and won’t cut it in a successful Gers side.

  4. They are not even played anyone yet and been tested these are loan players who haven't even been played in a full time team on the bench never mind in Europe what are you on about he hasn't managed a team yet in a league this chaos and it will end in tatters lucky if he finishes the season without getting sacked or told to go rangers won't do anything with 3rd rate players his team is worse than last season the old firm will see to that no pace in the side no striker no defence shocking

  5. You have to expect that by improving the core group of players it would improve the existing players. We were the leagues top scorers last season and will look to improve. Unfortunately while morelos is low on confidence id let hom find it on the training ground. If it doesn't make him hungry hes not good enough. Patience is whats needed its pre-season and new players need time.

  6. Id like to see us have Flanagan at RB,
    John at LB
    Sell Tavernier

    And as for the Striker?
    …Solanke on Loan!
The Lad would Tear The SPL a New One!

  7. My god lets get the season started before judgement on SG give him aproper chance to see what he can do
