Have Rangers ‘taken’ Liverpool from Celtic?

With all the Liverpool influence growing day by day, with a certain Mr Gerrard in town now, there is no question following Rangers’ signing of Jordan Rossiter in 2016 that something of a relationship between the clubs may have been born.

Much to the chagrin of the usual love in the other side of town seem to have claimed over Anfield’s finest.

Outwith the YNWA nonsense, something which Celtic nicked from Liverpool, of course, the east end lot have always portrayed themselves as Liverpool’s best mates.

And yet here we are, with the biggest Liverpool legend of the past 30 years, and one of the biggest British football legends of the same period, now our manager and wanting to get one over on them.

Meanwhile Rangers are happily hosting a hospitality night at Ibrox to watch Gerrard’s team do battle with a man he hopes to emulate in Zinedine Zidane’s Real Madrid, in the Champions League final.

It all adds up to good things for Rangers, and makes you wonder just much hogwash Celtic’s relationship with all things Anfield actually is or was.

Rangers’ relationship with Liverpool, which was never particularly notable apart from the Graeme Souness years, is undeniably starting to blossom.

Rangers are being linked with the likes of Solanke, a bunch of youth players and other benefits from being furnished with Steven Gerrard as manager.

And Liverpool themselves are in a pretty healthy state – POTY in Salah, an enigmatic and charismatic manager in Jurgen Klopp and have as good as secured UCL for next season too, but for a final day calamity.

It’s a good time to forge an alliance with Anfield, and both sides come out of it with mutual benefits. Rangers get access to a lot of good young players we might not have had a chance with before, plus access in general to players we could never have expected, while Liverpool get a potential future manager in Gerrard who could impress enough to get the dream gig in the future.

Meanwhile Celtic walk alone.

  1. When young (11-16) most of us Rangers fans seemed to like Liverpool and the filth liked man-ure.
No idea when the filth and Liverpool were ever 'together'?

  2. Naw we’ve not taken Liverpool but Ayetge Great Unwashed are confused. Same with a portion of the Scousers.

Fuck them all. Get it ‘round them.

🎼Sign on, Sign on….with hope in your heart

  3. You're correct alan63!Rangers and liverpool had strong links in the 70's,
80's & a good part of the 90's!So ibrox noise i was always under the impression growing up and being football mad, from a very young age, that it was rangers/liverpool links and celtic/everton links! Also rangers/man city links and celtic/man utd links!Having been to a few liverpool games myself when i was a lot younger,i was told by a good few liverpool fans, who supported rangers up here, that everton fans used to sing a song against liverpool & rangers! It went something like,"TO HELL WITH LIVERPOOL AND RANGERS TOO AND WE'LL DROWN THEM BOTH IN THE MERSEY BLUE"!So there you are ibrox noise!

    • 100% correct Robert. In those days (and probably now) it was exactly the way you say. I don't think the people quoting Celtic/Liverpool links have the first clue what they are talking about.

  5. Rangers and Liverpool have a great deal in common – not least the fact that both clubs have lost a lot of fans in stadium disasters. God rest the souls of the 66 who died in the Ibrox disaster and the 96 who died at Hillsborough. Celtic will claim to be soulmates with whoever they think is hip at any given time – Man U one minute, Liverpool the next. I say the Rangers connection with Liverpool goes much deeper than any flirtatious Celtic connection. Welcome to Steven Gerrard and here's wishing him and Rangers every success.

    • It's always been Rangers & Liverpool. Celtic & Everton. Nothing has changed there. There are other teams extremely pro Rangers – most notably Chelsea.

  6. The connections are a lot of Liverpool fans come over from Ireland to watch them. Let’s stop being stupid about this. We support Rangers. Stop trying to get one up all the time and concentrate on OUR club.

  7. B ut when it all comes down to it in a head to head there are no friends both sides are all out to win.

  8. There were many links between Rangers and English club so due to the relationship between Scot Symon through the links he had with former army footballing colleagues during WW2.
He organised pre season friendliest with teams like Spurs (Bill Nicholson), Bertie Mee (Arsenal), Joe Mercer (Man. City), Bill Shankley (Liverpool), Joe Harvey (Newcastle) among a few others at Aston Villa, Burnley and Wolves who I don’t remember the names of. The Hearts manager at that time, was also one of that group and it was common for them to be playing pre season games with the same teams.
The association that links Liverpool with Celtic comes down to them both singing you’ll never walk alone, when both teams played at Anfield Gerry Marsden sang it live and Celtic adopted it for themselves, plus there was the link with Kenny Dalglixh and the other link they shared was the Irish tricolour displayed on the terraces due to Irish internationals playing for Liverpool, like Heighway, Babb, Whelan, etc.
Liverpool like Glasgow has a religious split and so supporters are linked by religion to Celtic but there were many players within Liverpool who were big Gers fans, Robbie Fowler was certainly a big fan Andy of course many Scots including Dalglish, Stevie Nicol, Gary McAllister, etc grew up Rangers fans.

  9. My Number 1 team is and always will be Rangers but from a Premier League Point of view my PL teams dont actually include Liverpool 🙄

They are Chelsea, Newcastle & West Ham ((and Leicester in the Season They won the League only 😂⚽
