The return of Walter Smith

The return of Walter Smith

With Rangers’ current manager Graeme Murty losing a huge amount of favour among fans recently, the dawn of reality that he probably isn’t the right guy to lead us forward has most certainly come upon us.

However, whisper it, more and more supporters are in favour of Walter Smith again. Frankly, he’s who we all want, he’s the boss, and he could easily turn this club round – if he could take Paul Le Guen’s diabolical mess and fix it in 24 hours, he can do the same with our current half decent squad.

I know I know, you can hear the ‘leave him alone’ and ‘let the guy retire’ from here. And I completely understand and borderline agree with such sentiment.

No one has given more to Rangers than Walter, and we love him forever for it.

But…there is unlikely to be a Rangers fan alive that would genuinely protest to having Walter back as manager. He was in remarkable form at the Legends match, back to his best after reports of ill health.

And while none of us wish the man stress and strife in his twilight years, we cannot help but speak with our hearts and say we want him back as manager.

No one owns the SPL like Walter Smith. He is the best manager the top flight has had other than Struth and Stein, and is every inch worthy of being mentioned in the same breath as those two, whatever side of the Old Firm you’re on. He is certainly the best manager the SPL has ever had.

Would he give us a Rangers of the level we expect? Absolutely. A couple of shrewd bosman signings to sort the defence out and Rangers are laughing.

We admit this article is far more in hope than expectation. Walter has earned a sangria in the sun, and is almost certainly loving retirement. Maybe a part of him misses the glory days at Ibrox, maybe he really doesn’t miss any of it and is happy on the beach with his shades on.

But more and more fans have murmured about a return to the dugout for the Old Master.

And the reality is there’s only one Walter Smith, and while we’ve enjoyed (relatively) recent success under Eck and Advocaat too, nothing compares to Uncle Walter.

  1. I don't think it's fair to ask more of him, after Walter then what? Is there more money to invest? Will we be able to get rid of all the Deadwood this summer to free up cash?

  2. The guy is 70 years old and deserves to enjoy his retirement rather than have all the hassle that would come with trying to get this team back on top with the prospect of little serious financial support from King and Co. Right now we need an investment of around £20m for the quality of player needed to replace the total failures, (about eleven of them), currently at the club. Yes, we have some decent players currently in the team, (if you exclude our centre backs), and yes, with guys like McCrorie, Rossiter and Dorrans, all returning from injury we are improving, but we still need another half dozen players and two or three of them need to be winners and leaders. We would also need to find a top quality number two for Walter so that he could hand over the reigns in a couple of seasons.

  3. IN……
He's 70 and done his bit,
Not one Rangers man alive can ask any more from him.
Let him enjoy taking his grandchildren to U-12 training and then to Burger King.

Our new manager is at advanced stages according to strong strong rumours coming out of Ibrox.
Ask Urself would U expect anything else from the club??
I know the board have fuked up and there not stupid they know they have done as such!
Everyone says Kings skint well where the fuk did the 11M come from, Dave is a rouge of Arthur Daley proportions🐖

    • There is no £11m. Tell you what – I will offer to buy the entire share capital at 5p. That will only cost me £3m. I don't have that either but the trick is I won't need it will I?? and neither will Dave need the £11m.

    • Fulham John.
I he has got money and fuking loads of it.

FFS he owns water in Africa.

Also he also handed 20M over to the club out of his back pocket.

Paid a SA tax man 50M cash in 2012 after pleading poverty.

In 2012 his net worth was $930M.

  4. Smith in the same breath as Stein.
    Grow up.
Jock Stein turned a team that couldnt win their own league into European Champions in less that 2 years spending £20k on Willie Wallace.

    • And they all lived in the same 2 bedroom flat with their parents & grandparents and only had to walk 50 yards to work…….zzzzzzzz……

    • Stein struck it lucky in the european cup meeting clubs on their way down its a different format now and Stein would struggle in eurooe

    • 21 trophies out of 30 in 10 seasons. Walter was as good as anyone. But he's done enough and why risk his legacy with our current mediocre bunch.

    • James.
Away and don t talk so much pish.
Stein never played 1 CL game in his puff, any team could win the old European Cup even Forrest ffs

  5. How many times does he have to say, NO! Do not ruin a wonderful career. The Kilmarnock manager will do for me.

  6. Would love too see uncle Walter back but really can't see it he would definitely put Rodgers shower in there place.would like too see gio or bilic come in maybe De boer

  7. aye! for me and sign pedro mendes for a season while were at it. midfield masterclass showed us exactly what we lack in that area. f**k it brng back bg clint hill as player/coach to sort that f****g defence oot.

  8. It would be great to have Walter back but much as I love the man in 2 years we would be back to square 1 unless we bring in his successor at the same time. Financially it is going to be an interesting summer …Good Season Book Sales New Kit Deal and Share Issue could see us financially ready to stop TIAR …Maybe Walter comes in as a consultant for the next season …with Barry ?????

  9. You know what, yes, even until the end of the season to secure second place and better chance of the cup, then get our replacement, cause Murty is woeful and we are very much in danger coming 4th this season, even 5th!

  10. would luv walter to come back maybe to help a new manager out or some other role but i feel taking the managers job full time might be too much for him now at his age just wish he was 10 or 20 years younger
anyway whatever he does i wish him all the best and i for one will never ever forget what he did for our club
    long live uncle walter

  11. Walter Smith one of the greatest managers of all,but would he come back to run a second or third best team, there would have to be £30 million plus for players and more for wages that he would need to take over Selltic,i still think if we put down £30 million they would double it catching them must be done with our own home growing players and we need to bring them on faster than we ever thought we would have,it can be done but Walter Smith may stay clear for now.

  12. The one thing Walter would do for sure is bring respect and dignity back to the club. In an instant he would restore us to our rightful place at the table standing no nonsense from the Petrie’s of the world. Internally he is also the one man who could stand up to King and demand that the chairman stood by his pre-takeover promises. Two year contract with McCall beside him in the dugout.

  13. Walter smith in his 2 spells as rangers manager, gave me a helluva lot of celebration nights, thats for sure!I thank him for that, from the very bottom of my heart.I've been a rangers shareholder and season ticket holder man and boy,for 42 years now and can honestly say, that sir walter smith is the greatest glasgow rangers manager,in my lifetime! But the clamour to bring back walter as manager i'd describe as very complimentary of the great one,but at the same time,a tad unfair.Walter has totally earned his retirement from football in general and of course his beloved rangers. We as a famous worldwide, institutional football club, should be scouring the globe for the next walter smith. We IMHO have to let this go,by accepting that wattie has done his 2 stints,as our manager with may i add, great success and distinction.Let the great man enjoy his well earned retirement with his family as he's now not long ago, turned 70 years YOUNG!!He'll always be welcomed back and be a total legend in all our hearts forever. He'll always be part of the great glasgow rangers family, long after we've all turned to dust.So we need to look forward and not back to walter all the time,at the first sign of trouble.I only wish however, that sir walter smith was 10 years younger!Enjoy your retirement walter smith!!

  15. He’s done his service for the Club you can’t ask for anymore than what he’s done. I can see where you’re coming from but it wouldn’t happen. I just hope whoever it is they get it bloody right this time and not another failed project.. FDB 🙈

  16. The one thing guaranteed that Walter would bring right away is to restore respect and dignity to our great club. No more liberties at our expense by the likes of Petrie. He is also the one figure who could make demands of the Board and from whom King could not hide. Two year contract with McCall at his side in the dug out.

  17. no wont happen would be unfair on walter ,say he could not get the better off selltic ,we would all be devastated .long live walter hopefully he enjoys next couple years watching famous reach 55,still think wee murty might do it . w,a,t,p

  18. Bring Walter back to help the next manager I would also use Walter to give the first team a kick up the backside they all need it they are robbing thear supporters by claiming wages and failing to win games if they don't want to be at the club get rid in the summer just like nicola did .

  19. This is bordering on the ridiculous ,he is 70 years old and to think he would risk his legendary status with limited funds is crazy talk.
It should be remembered that even in his second coming Walter had a budget of about 15 million and spent a good bit of it

  20. Have dignity and Respect.
    Walter has retired.

To the guy rambling on about Big Jock Stein.
    Suck this
