The “Josh Windass Phenomenon”

The “Josh Windass Phenomenon”

We’ve noticed another groundswell building up by readers of Ibrox Noise and fans at large – the ‘Josh Windass Phenomenon’.

Only a month ago Josh was the toast of fans. Scoring for fun, assisting similarly and picking up a well-deserved February Player of the Month for the SPL.

Now we actually have fans glad he got injured (we don’t subscribe to this) in order to get him out of the team.

It is true – he doesn’t offer a lot as a team player in any sense when he is not scoring or assisting – we have described his contribution as that of a ‘passenger’ when he is not in his zone.

And currently he is indeed playing like the pre-Murty Windass, the one who made no impact on matches and fans wanted to run out of the club.

But the difference? Back then he was out of position on the left wing under Pedro; now he’s in his best position and doesn’t have that excuse.

We find the whole Windass situation bizarre – we have changed in our opinion of him down the years here on the site. Some of us like him, some love him, some hated him, and he grew on others.

And we all accept he’s not pulling his weight right now and isn’t giving the club much.

But only three matches ago this kid scored with one of the best finishes a Rangers player has produced against Celtic in years. Barely 360 minutes later everyone hates him?

Players have dips. It happens. Windass is an impact player – put him in his best position and he does damage to the opposition by and large, but he is also only human and won’t produce his best every single match.

Do we like the kind of player he is? Not really, but we want what’s best for the team and when he scores and assists, that’s best for the team. He’s effective.

We get told off a lot by our readers (including more than a few insults) for ‘turning on players’ or not backing them – we back all our players, even if we don’t like all of them. It’s well on record we don’t like Morelos, and haven’t for months (hard to take to someone as sour-faced and who’s admitted repeatedly he wants to leave) – but we accepted his place in the team as long as he was doing good work. And we praised the good work he did.

And yet some fans are slaughtering Windass who has never made noises about leaving and when in the zone is one of the most dangerous players in the SPL?

As we said earlier before, the problem of Graham Dorrans may already be solved with Windass’ injury, depending on severity, and we guess in some supporters’ minds the ‘problem’ of Windass has been solved too on the same Richter scale.

But Rangers are a better prospect with a fit and in form Windass in the side.

  1. I would never want 1 of our players to get injured, we suffer with enough injuries every season! But this windass situation is down to Murty being obsessed with having windass in the team no matter what. I've said loads of times he's not good enough to build a team around and the rest of our team are not good enough to carry him for 85 mins every game! Our team would be far stronger with mcrorie and Docherty holding and Dorrans playing in windass position. His workrate is 100 times better and he's not short on quality either. Dorrans isn't a holding midfielder! We have the players we just need a manager who wont be so stubborn and just play players in correct position and maybe even give opposition teams something to think about by (whisper it) – changing the formation!

  2. I've always said that I thought Windass had ability and was pleased when he was used in his natural position and seemed to turn things around with some fans. For that reason I'm not going to turn against him now. Murty initially got more from him but himself has lost his way. Perhaps a new manager can get more out of him.
That's not to say he can't be dropped or subbed.
In general Windass IS the big problem but only because Murty is sticking with 4-2-3-1 solely to accommodate him it seems.

  3. Murty Needs to Go!

    Windass needs to be Sold!
…we cant have passengers, We need players who will put a shift in for the Blue Jersey ⚽💙👍

  4. Windass only gives 30 minutes per game. After his goal against the beggars, he was posted missing. This fixation of Murtys by guaranteeing him a place must affect morale in the team who know fine they can give a better shift!
The whole mood of our club is one of defeatism before a ball is kicked. Most of the players are void of confidence or bottle to fight tooth and nail for the Rangers jersey. It starts with Murty!
I am most intrigued if Mark Allan has already handed the board a short list of managers to take over Murty. The board will be happy if Rangers make the top 4, still in European football. I won't! This season is a total waste of an opportunity to win the title as the beggars have dropped points left, right and centre and we have choked!!! Again, inconsistency is our enemy and it won't get any better as the season finishes!!

  5. He's on the sale list also,
Playing 4 mins in 90 just ain't good enough for the team.
Never been a #10 never will be.
The new manager will bin him in a heart beat!!!

  6. I for one gave windass a chance when he was getting stick give him a run of games and lets see how he does, well he done ok and he's got what's needed good pace and can score goals, but now looking at him where does he go during games he just goes missing, after he scored in the old firm game he disappeared same against killie and m/well,we need players who can compete for 90 mins and I know he's not the only one but you have to be dropped when you are not contributing, he should watch video of the shifts his old man put in when he was playing.

    • Don't think it's a dip in form with Windass , it's more he seems to shit himself when the tackles go flying in . The likes of Motherwell , Killie and Celtic have players prepared to put the boot in , that's when Josh disappears . He's easily intimidated .
. There's a soft spine right through our team and there has been for years , it's time it was sorted .

  7. As most fans are saying he does go missing for large parts of games but as you say is an impact player. So why not make him impact sub? He can do his usual 15mins off the bench when teams are tiring. Tactically allows either Dozza to play his natural role or gives Cumdog a chance to form a partnership with el Buffalo.

  8. Impact player, new one on me, when we had a great team, everyone was an impact player, that is a player you could rely on during the full game, Windass, well it really stretches the realms of teamwork, even the great goal scored that you mention became, for him, a flash in the pan as the game definetly passed him by

  9. We will definitely win the league if we get Steve Clarke in as manager , sign Malumba too . Every player or manager that does well against Rangers ?Sign them up ? It wouldn't be hard to look good against us , so waste our money and sign half the SPL ? We need a manager with experience with mccoist and Ferguson in the wings . We haven't got a bad team at the moment it's just not good , instead of signing good players we should sign players that would get into the ceptic 11 , if not don't sign them , watp

  10. I will be as clear as possible and cut to the chase. He has and always will be a bit player. He is a passenger and offers nothing unless he bags a goal. Absolutely nothing. He is above all of that the biggest shitebag I have ever seen in my 50 years of watching rangers. He is not good enough and epitomizes the mediocre standard that is now acceptable as the norm. He is nothing notre than Murty's pet project.

  11. It’s all been said above. Lucky to get 10 minutes a game from Windass. Murty seems to really fancy him as a player, another reason he too has to go. Take what we can get from him in the summer and move on.
