Two big decisions; have Rangers’ board already taken action?

Rangers’ board already has two big calls to make for next season, but if recent reports are anything to go by, one of them has already been made.

The big decision rests on two key men in the Ibrox ranks whose presence or otherwise could well define Rangers’ season next campaign;

Graeme Murty and Alfredo Morelos.

As yet, we simply don’t know if Rangers’ chiefs want to stick with Murty or twist and take the chance to get a proper manager. This is not to smear Murty completely, but he’s a rookie boss promoted from the youth ranks and recent results have not done his case for permanent appointment any good at all.

Meanwhile the pursuit for Preston’s Louis Moult suggest strongly the directors intend to cash in on Morelos (who wants to leave as much as they want the money) this summer and sign up the ex-Motherwell man as well as securing Jason Cummings permanently.

So the key decisions are ‘stick with Murty?’ and ‘sell Morelos?’.

For what our opinion is worth, Murty has shown certain competence in the role – his record up till the Celtic match was rather good this calendar year, including wins over Aberdeen and Hearts.

It came badly unstuck though when we look at the teams to have beaten us – Celtic, Hibs and Killie – overall the best three sides in the SPL these days, outwith ourselves. That litmus test was big, and Murty failed.

To step in the right direction probably needs an experienced manager who can lift the squad to the next level – Murty, for our money, has already peaked and done as well as he can, and we cannot see this club growing much more under him. We suspect the board feel the same.

As for Morelos – he wants to leave, simple enough. His ambition is England and to his credit at least he signed the year extension to give us a higher transfer fee for him. But he will be going. Therefore Rangers’ board appears to be planning for life without him in their courting of Moult, who may just form a rather dynamic partnership with Cummings – a big strong physical unit like Moult alongside a more mobile and technically brilliant striker like Cummings.

One decision does seem to have been made already. We shall see if the other follows suit

  1. If we win every game till end of season then Murty remains. If we finish 3rd or worse he goes. That bit is simple. Anything in between makes board earn their corn. For me a new manager but not McInnes.
Morelos. Simple we take the money. £10m in a year is good business. New share issue , new money and a stronger squad. We must off load remnants of Warburton and Pedro. Murtys signings were mostly loans so we can pick and choose.

    • Could not agree more Alan. I made the mistake a while back of showing Pedro way too much loyalty. I am certyainly not going to make that mistake twice. At least Pedro had been a first team manager rather than only working with development squads like Murty. Murty is just not Rangers class! Neither was Pedro or Warburton. When are the board going to stop taking the piss out of us fans with the absolute DRECK they have been foisting on us. We need a top class manager otherwise our loyalty is going to be severely tested.

  2. I can understand the reluctance to endorse Murty as manager, but I would point out that nobody expected him to come with experience. Not bringing on a sub when Celtic went down to 10 men was a tactical mistake. Being unable to counter Kilmarnock was a tactical mistake. So why is nobody questioning the tactician brought in to support Murty? Why was Jimmy Nichol hired, if not to whisper tactical experience into Murty's ear?
I will happily swap Murty out, for a manager good enough to guarantee success. But that manager will cost several million a year and will expect a suitable transfer budget, probably over £20 million for the quality we will need to guarantee success.
But I have head nobody say who this mythical manager is that can guarantee success. More worrying, I have heard nobody explain where the money is going to come from, just that it needs to be spent. If anybody thinks I am wrong on the sums, please explain. I reckon a quality CB, mid to late 20s, strong on the ground and in the air, capable of marshalling our defence, will cost £5 million and want a wage of another £5 million over 4 years. A midfield general probably the same. There is £20 million already, without the manager's pay. And it will not guarantee success.

What if they want to bring in half a dozen new players? Not unreasonable, but we have a heavy squad already with only a couple out of contract this summer. Payoffs cost money.

I say without a sugar daddy or magic wand, we stick with Murty while he learns and ask Mark Allen to find the best he can to tide us over while young players grow into the jerseys.

As for Morelos, he could bring in a lot of the money needed, as could Windass. If we replaced both with Hardie, Cummings, McBurnie and Moult, we would have the strength in depth and a bit of cash to play with.

A lot of ifs and ands though

  3. Oddly enough had we beaten celtic and kilmarnock then I doubt if this matter would have been raised. To make a decision based on 2 games ( because basically that is what it boils down to) is not only idiotic, but totally unprofessional. Far too much rush to judgement at the club from a supporter level that is. I read that 52% want to keep Murty as manager and I would totally agree with that. He will learn and get better give the man a chance for goodness sake.

    • There is a lot in what you say Jason. Especially when Motherwell's 10 men had Celtic over a barrel for around 75 minutes of the game to go.
However we DIDN'T win our last two games.
IF we do well in the next few games and IF Graeme Murty is given the manager's job he will have had time to not only assess his squad but also his closest advisors.
I wish him well, I really do and if he gets results against Aberdeen, Hibs and Celtic especially he could buy himself another 12 months as manager. If the results are poor that would be a different matter. I would like to see Archie Knox sitting beside him for the last few games.

  4. Don't want us signing Moult
Dont't rate him at all 👎

    If we sell Morelos,
    Cummings, Hardie, McBurnie & Grigg

If we Manage to Keep Him
    Morelos, Cummings, Hardie, McBurnie

  5. Jason, oddly enough we didn't beat Celtic or Kilmarnock and that in a nut shell is the problem. As a fan base we show far to much loyalty to managers that are quite clearly out of their depth. If its just about finding the cheapest option then lets keep Murty in place but as things stand I would like to see us stopping 10 in a row and we need someone with experience rather than hoping Murty comes good in the end.

  6. ScotsWhaHae. Along with usually, Robbie Wilson, you talk my lingo bud.

    1.
Cash in on Moreles Get the deal arranged Now.
    2. Louis Moult. Definitely. Have at least 2 back up options though for all.positions Yes including Foderingham

I'm no scout but there are, off the top of my head players going to be available

    Bridcutt
    Gauld
    McGinn
    Anya
    Aluko
    Rhodes
    Snodgrass

    Manager?
I've back him all the way but that One decision saw a good chance to smack those cunts where it hurt! 10 man opposition who were on the ropes. No Extra Striker.
It wouldn't kill me to see Murty stay on but he is clearly getting no help from Nichol. The latter definitely has no future here.

We Need to pay the younger Scots guys what they are due Surely
Bates Burt and Hardie to name a few have to stop being treated like second class citizens ESPECIALLY with the likes of Rossitter and Krancjar earning cash for fuck all.

Brings me to the 'new guy's

I know one or 2 decisions went against Ryan Jack.
But he needs to start producing when he returns or go

Loverboy Dorrans. Sorry guys. One more injury he can beat it too.

    Russel Martin? Shite

Jamie Murphy MUST be made Captain.

    Others:-

    Holt
    Wallace
    Dodoo
    MOH
    Holliday

    Goodbye

Wee have to stop fucking around

and stop holding on HOPING a player ala Rossitter will come go ( or stop ripping the pish)
While our own youth have to been farmed out.
    Potentially ruining their careers

I don't care about sentiments or if they are bears themselves

    Halliday is Shite

    Laudrup wasn't. Magician

Cheers mate. Think we all have the same goal, just different plans on how to get there. I agree with most of what you say above, but while I rate Moult, I would rather take McBurnie. Younger, out of contract, Rangers daft, but most of all, he is scoring for a poor Championship team while Moult is not scoring at a better Championship team. Hard to compare scoring rates without knowing more of the background, but if only one, I would take Olly.

I like McGinn, cracking player but he isn't out of contract and suspect he will go for more than we have. May not want to worry his grandad either. Would take any of the others on that list, although it will depend on who goes out. First priority has to be 2 or 3 CBs depending on whether Bates stays. At least one has to be mature and experienced. We should be able to find better than Martin, but if not it may have to be him as we need at least one experienced head. Could it be Wallace? Worth a try, no downside.

Totally agree on Murty and Nicholl, have just written on that elsewhere. Would like to give Hardie a 2 year contract to fight for a place then sell next summer if he fails. But try him for God's sake.

Jack and Dorrans, I like both but they need to get fit and stay fit. Hopefully this season has been a nightmare for them, not normal.

Dodoo, MOH, out. Halliday and Holt can go if they want, otherwise Holt is in a big queue and Halliday is John's backup. Rossiter, Alves, Herrera etc will only go on their terms. If we can't find buyers (and nobody is buying Rossiter) we would have to pay then to go. No point in that

    • Totally agree with Brian Clark. You are no scout mate haha! If that's the best of the players that will be available then we need to look at players that aren't. And cut Wallace a bit of slack. He stood by us in our darkest days playing in the lower divisions when he could easily have had a decent career down south earning more money. He deserves our trust and support.

  7. Written on here many times before, about how highly i rate former motherwell striker louis moult.I've always reckoned moult would be a very good signing for us!However i've now been watching a bit of oli mcburnie lately,
especially since we were linked in january with him,as a possible loan signing.I now having watched him regularly, reckon i would rather rangers signed oli mcburnie than louis moult,as the strike partner to jason cummings,if morelos is sold in the summer. We can't sign both mcburnie and moult as they are very similar styled strikers. As they can both play the lone striker role, both can hold the ball up,both are quite strong and robust, both are good finishers, who are constantly looking to get their shot away, mcburnie i reckon has a wee bit more pace than moult, both are equally as good in their link up play.

  8. Pretty sure the new manager will have his own ideas who's staying and who's going.
Can't see Murty getting the job, we need a real manager and quick!!

    • Robbie who’s this magic manager that’s going to win Rangers the league next term? If he doesn’t do it in his first term he’s sacked that’s how it rolls now.

    • Bawbag73.
I would like to think our board has made a decision over Murty and his inexperience won't do him any favours at all.
Would also like to think if that is the case, our new manager will have been choosen by now and has made a verbal agreement, possibly in work till the summer.
The DOF & the board will be on it behind the scenes.
A better quality squad just as important as a new manager!!

    • We differ slightly on our thoughts about Manager situation… Totally agree about the better squad though Robbie mate.. Like you say MA will have been doing some spade work with the scouting team regards the Summer targets

  9. If we are going on the assumption that Morelos is going to be sold

…I do not want us to sign moult!
…Dont Rate him at all 👎⚽

The championship has shown us how good he really is.

Id go and sign McBurnie AND Grigg(Wigan) 😀👍💙⚽

    • I don't get this fascination with Mc Burnie and Grigg. Being a Rangers fan doesn't make you a Rangers player. He is still unproven. And being a Northern Ireland substitute with a catchy song doesn't mean you get to play for a Rangers. If he wad any good he'd be playing for his country ahead of Lafferty and clubs would be queuing up to sign him.
