Should Graeme Murty remain manager beyond the summer?

There is no denying there is a greater sense of belief around Ibrox these days, even though this calendar year has seen bitter losses to Hibs, Celtic and Kilmarnock.

There has been a more notable growth in morale, with a fine run of results overall and a great number of stand out players, such as Jamie Murphy, Jason Cummings, Sean Goss and the outstanding Greg Docherty.

However, there is a growing suggestion about the future of Graeme Murty, and with his current contract expiring in June, just like many of the players, fans seem unsure if they actually wish the ex-Academy youth coach to remain in the post.

The murmurs of discontent were certainly in evidence when he first got the job for the rest of the campaign, but faded impressively after he and assistant coach Jimmy Nicholl racked up a fine run of both performances and results, and gave supporters a great feeling of self belief, with the notion that Rangers were becoming more like Rangers.

However, following troubling displays against both Celtic and Kilmarnock, the growing optimism was doused more than a tad, and a return to the drawing board seemed possible.

The question which comes to hand about Graeme Murty is this:

How much of Rangers’ 2018 results are down to his management, and how much are down to the success of January’s signings?

If we look at December’s results, it was a mixed bag at best – wins over Aberdeen and Motherwell were tempered hugely by losses to Kilmarnock, St Johnstone, and a criminal display at Easter Road where Rangers committed evening-light robbery by managing the win.

But then Docherty, Goss, Cummings and Murphy arrived (not to mention Nicholl) and suddenly Rangers went on a fine run, Hibs loss aside.

This cannot be coincidence, nor can the arrival of Nicholl. We have already suggested the former Raith man has had a steadying influence on the team – but there is no better influence on a team than better players coming in.

But there are limits to this – and those limits were reached when Killie and Celtic both beat the side quite comfortably.

Should Murty remain the man in charge? Is he the man to take us forward?

Probably not, frankly. He doesn’t speak terribly well, lacks invention, lacks experience, and if you compare his CV with that of Clarke, Rodgers and even McInnes, there’s just no competition.

Is this what Rangers fans are happy to settle on?

  1. The ONLY way to stop 10IAR is to get a proven manager with far better credentials and experience than the last 3 who we have had to endure. Frank de Boer ticks quite a few boxes for me. We have to get a quality individual in very soon and then give him at least 2 transfer windows to get better players in. Otherwise it will be too late and we will never hear the end of that mob going on about 10IAR!!

    • Craig

Frank de Boer has great playing credentials and a fair bit of experience, but his recent record is rank.
I like Murty, but would be happy to bin him for this mythical quality, proven manager who can guarantee the title, will work for what we can afford and can do it all on our transfer budget which is not massive.
Only two problems are one, I can't think of any football team in the world that doesn't want to hire this guy, except Manchester City.
      and two,
I don't know his name. I have forgotten it. Can someone out there remind me what his name is?

  2. if you had asked this question before the celtic game it would be 90% plus, 2 poor results, if not for morelos we would have won the celtic game, it is all doom and gloom once again. We need to appoint him now and get set for the summer window. WHO else is there to take over ?

  3. Sorry, but I find it strange that we are praising Jimmy Nichol for his work and criticising Murty. Let me start by saying I like and respect Jimmy Nichol.

Everybody knew that Murty lacked experience and the last two games have broadcast that to the world, outmanoeuvred by Shiny teeth then Steve Clarke.

So remind me, what was Jimmy Nichol brought in for? I thought it was to coach Murty through the learning process. To be there beside him when Celtic go down to 10 men and whisper in his shell like
"Make a change – pull one or even two of the underperformers and get some energy and trickery into the team. We need to go for the throat here. They will fall back and defend the box. Put a second striker on and charge"

Is that not exactly why Nichol was brought in? Against Killie, the same. Give Murty the benefit of your advice, explain where we are failing and how to fix it. That is the job of the experienced deputy. It is what the Royal Cardigan did for Souness.

So can anyone explain to me why Jimmy is getting a free ride and Murty is seen as the weak link here?

  4. Win percentages as coach/manager:

    Clarke: 36%
    McInnes: 46%
    Rodgers: 52%
    Murty: 63%

    Just saying like..

  5. Probably not, frankly.

"He doesn’t speak terribly well.." – yes he does
"lacks invention" – what and McInnes doesn't?
"lacks experience" – so did Kenny Dalglish at Liverpool & Graeme Souness at….where was that again…?
"and if you compare his CV with that of Clarke, Rodgers and even McInnes, there’s just no competition" – see my previous post for win rates so you're right there too!

We lost 2-3 to the scum, having led twice and with Morelos missing a sitter for a draw. Then lost 0-1 to Kilmarnock who haven't lost to anyone except the sheep in 6 months. All of a sudden he's the worst manager in the world. Give me a break! Prior to that he's beat the sheep three times in arrow and drawn twice with the scum away. I think he deserves a bit more credit for turning a shambles into a team with prospects.

    • Spot on with This FJ. The knee jerk reactions in some of these articles is incredible. Clarke was going nowhere down south and suddenly he's a coaching genius because he's managed to get a team sticking to a dour system in a poor league and grinding out results. Then theres the brigade longing for yesterday when we had the clout to bring in some ready-made big names – well, those days are gone and we need to create our own. Experience isn't the key here, it's ability and the proper structure – how much experience did Lennon have?

    • He really doesn’t speak well. For a start he said ‘the atmosphere at Celtic Park is second to none’. Let that sink in a minute. He said the atmosphere is better there than at Ibrox! Whether he actually believes that or not is immaterial because he certainly shouldn’t have said it on camera.

    • Agree 100%. I think he's done really well considering what he's had to work with. Just who are we going to replace him with that will do any better? Murty's problem is that he was doing doing too well there for a period, 6 on the trot and goals a plenty so all of a sudden the fans have really started believing and are hurting more because of the belief Murty had instilled.

I think the OF game which we really did deserve to win but didn't, it's football, sometimes you lose games you don't deserve to. Murty will learn from this and hopefully so will the players.

TIme to get off his back and start supporting the players on the pitch!

  6. Inexperience!!
He's not ready for the Rangers job yet.
True gentelman doing his very best but thrown in at the deep deep end heed first!!!!

    • Agreed 👍
Hes not the man to take us up a gear as much as we appreciate and rrspect him and the job he has done.

  7. In response to your question: No!!! Murty has to take some credit for the signings (although many think that was down to the DoF). Look, I like Murty: he handles the position with dignity – something the previous two incumbents failed miserably at. However, he is tactically naive and, quite bluntly, has no idea how impact on a game that is running away from us. The breadman got slaughted for his use of substitutes – always bringing them on after 60 mins. However, that gave the sub's plenty of time to have an impact on the game. Murty has NEVER done this. Eg why was Cummings not introduced immediately Celtic went down to 10 men? Against Killie, we should have went with two strikers straight from the start of the second Hall. Killie had completely bossed the first 45 mins. Of course his first gigantic error was dropping Morelos who, miss apart, was outstanding against Celtic. Jason is a striker with real potential but he can't play as a lone striker. He never did at Hibs or at any club he has played. Holding play up is simply not his game and for Murty to ignore this was criminal. So, and it's all about opinions, Murty does not have the knowledge, experience or nous to manage a club of Rangers stature.

  8. keep murty ,he is gaining experience look what the poor guy has went through for us rangers ,he is making a team ,docherty murphy brilliant players hes not had any money so dont judge him murty knows he needs two center halves .next season we will be magnificent .sign murty just now .w,a,t,p

  9. SWH & Fulham John are bang on the button for me.

Typical knee jerk reaction from the support and dare I say it IN who’ve in truth never liked Murty. McInnes don’t make me fucking laugh! Aye FDB is the right man for the job because he played for us so he will win us the league yes? Might as well hoy Gio in too.. Or my favourite might as well give the job to Barry as he’s done a sterling job at each Club he’s been at…

Murty ain’t perfect as he’s learning but he’s better than what we had and most importantly the players are doing their best for him. The squad needs improvement that’s for sure but not the Management..

  10. he's done a good job to steady the ship and find a way of playing away from home.

My two worries are firstly our home form hasn't been good enough and the players seem to go into their shell when playing at Ibrox and we don't seem to have a plan B when teams sit deep and hit us on the break.

My second worry is that Murty isn't a big enough name to attract the qualìty of player we need to kick on again next year saying that the signings in January have been decent but if we're going to stop Celtic we need 3 or 4 really good signings to improve the team enough to challenge next season.

  11. Murty has made a massive difference, agree with Stevie1 completely! Must also totally disagree with Ibrox Noise'comments regarding Murty,he speaks well unlike the Aberdeen manager who who can barely put two words together!
When it comes to a cv,how succesfull has celtic supporting Clark been prior to Kilmarnock? Take a look at the Aberdeenn
manager's cv, regularly loses the big games, lacked the bottle to take the Biggest job in Scotland if not the UK and failed in Bristol. At least Murty stepped up to the plate in the face of adversity when asked.
As someone already said, there is no Mythical quality proven manager out there for us!

  12. Agree with Davie boy 100%, But the bigger picture for all of us is that we need someone with lots of money (ashley) to have any chance of us stopping Them/ winning 10iar and yes I wasnt happy with what Ashley did in the past regarding our club but we can't be too Choosey and would take him in a heartbeat as he would only have to put a fraction of the money into the club to win the league and get us into champions league/playoffs compared to what he would have to spend at Newcastle and have the daunting task of challenging the top teams in English premiership whereas we only have to deal with 1 other team/them……

Will probably get slaughtered from a few bears, but lets be honest will murty and the lack of funding be enough to stop Them winning 10iar!!! Watp

    • Bringing Ashley back is the worst possible scenario.
This is the guy who has drained the club for every penny possible. How do you think this guy gets rich? Put it this way, he is not charitable.
He is not allowed anywhere near our club.

We need to stop dreaming of some rich saviour who will buy a load of multi million pound players. That's not happening.
We currently have a board of successful businessmen who are stabilising our club and covering the deficit until a time where all their astute work means the club will be self sufficient.

  13. It’s ok lads. We will beat Motherwell next week and Murty will be a God AGAIN!!! Let’s just judge him at the end of the season and stop changing our minds every week.

    • Ain't that the truth. Hardest games of the season will test top six teams, tactics and managers. C'mon Graeme, let's show them what we are made of.

  14. He Murty should stay for now so we can have a top notch manager in place in the next year to 18 months,he has steady the ship its been some of the players who have been the let down, get rid of most of the average players this next window and if its nine then bring in four or five very good players and lets see what he can do,but for now he has done what he can do with the tools he has.

  15. Graeme Murty is a huge improvement in where we have been post Ally .He has worked well to get us at least competing. However I'm not convinced he can go to the next level and win rhe Totle unless he and Mark Allen are given the funds to make it happen and we start playing with 2 up front at home..if we do that apart from the Rotten Mob we would terrorise their defences..We need better players including proper CH's and someone to play with Cummings. In conclusion straight answer …Murty the best option at the moment ..Not too many alternatives within our price range and who ever comes in will want substantial funds

  16. There is a simple reason that the support is divided on this, or simply just not sure.

    1. It's because we all believe Murty is improving as a manager. Even if some think not quickly enough, or that we can't wait for him to be better.

    2. And more importantly, if there is an outstanding candidate who is interested in the job, who is quite simply better than all the other options then we should take him. We should always be looking for improvement.
But sorry, the likes of Clarke, McInnes, Wright just are not the answer
