Rangers make move for Preston striker – planning for life without Morelos?

As we reported a few weeks ago, Rangers are bizarrely interested again in the services of Louis Moult, with the latest on the story claiming the 25-year old striker is a summer target and open to the move.

We find this story odd – we are completely in favour of signing him, but we were supposed to do that in January before losing interest and letting the lad go to England instead.

Now, after a weak spell with Preston, Moult is back on our radar?

The whole thing doesn’t really add up, but there you have it.

Anyway, Moult marauded the SPL up till January, and was top scorer to boot, in a, at the time, out-of-form Motherwell, hence Alex Neil Preston came in and clinched his services for a reported £500,000.

It hasn’t worked out down south for the forward, and Rangers have long viewed him as the natural successor to Kenny Miller, therefore are taking the opportunity to make a move for him in lieu of rebuilding for next season.

It does, of course, throw up another key question; is the move for Moult a strong sign Rangers intend to cash in on Alfredo Morelos?

The Colombian signed a new deal to much fanfare some weeks ago, but overlooked by most was that it was a mere year extension and conceivably on a higher wage – it really only meant Morelos would get a higher wage while Rangers secured him for a higher transfer fee in the summer. Even the player’s own comments explicitly excluded any notion of staying long term:

“I am very happy to have signed a new contract with Rangers. I know how important the club is in Scotland, how many titles that it has won and how much history that it has. I am really happy here and I am working hard for the team. I love it when the fans show their support to me and sing to me. I’m really grateful for their support and want to repay them with performances on the pitch.”

About as bland and generic as it gets. Rangers clearly know he sees his future elsewhere and the move for Moult could well be gearing up for that and the end of Kenny’s career too.

Are Rangers looking at a Moult/Cummings partnership up front?

Rangers are clearly planning for the new campaign already and this is the first sign of that.

  1. I think Morelos will go in the summer and Rangers should accept any offer of 10 million and above and reinvest in the team. I wonder however if Moult has the quality to get us closer to Celtic. Do we need to be a bit more ambitious than shopping for Championship failures. There is a big world out there full of players like Morelos?

    • morelos couldn't even get in a squad of 24 match listed players v france last night yet you think hes worth in excess of £10m ?

I will have a pint of whatever juice you're drinking. Barry was supposed to be £6m and went for £700k?

any money that is brought in will be used for day to day expenses like repairs, leccy, wages, pay offs.

  2. Makes sense; teams up here don't want to deal with us, teams down South don't mind. Motherwell would've put us over a barrel and overcharged us for the guy, whereas we're more likely to pay market value if we buy him from Preston (especially if he's underperformed there).

We didn't need him in January – Morelos was still scoring and Cummings had just come in. If we sell Morelos over the summer – which I think is likely/a good move – then we'll need a proven scorer, which Moult is.

All in all, if it happens, it seems like a decent bit of business.

  3. I have no problem with signing Moult, but why are we targeting someone who has not done well in the Championship when there is another player who has scored 4 goals in 5 games for a team fighting relegation?
Who is a diehard Bluenose who would walk to Glasgow to play for us.
Come in Oliver McBurnie, your time is up!!

  4. I Hope we Dont Sign Moult
    Dont Rate Him At All

He Isnt as Good as People Make out
He won't get us closer to Celtic

Id Rather we Signed Grigg from Wigan!
    🏟👌💙

  5. If we can get Moult, Cummings and McBurnie as our strikers for next season and have money to invest from the likely sale of Morelos we'll make a real go of it.

  6. Unless Morelos has a spectacular end of season you can forget any notion of £10m. I think he'll be at Ibrox next season.

  7. Moult would be a step backwards. If he can’t cut it at PNE why then do you think he’d be a hit for Rangers 🤔 Olie McBurnie would be a far better option with Hardie too.

Then again all that depends on who’s going to be the Manager doesn’t it as of now nobody has a Scooby Doo. What formation does said Manger play and so on we’ll depend on the options upfront.

  8. Can't make the grade at Preston, but good enough to play up front for Rangers? Oh how our game has fell to the gutter!

  9. If Moult and Cummings is our front line next year we are trueley fuked.
2 complete flops from the EC.
    5th place with them 2!!!
