Rangers issue warning to star man

Rangers have issued a subtle warning to contract rebel David Bates, out injured till May, over his negotiating stance with regards any extension.

The 21-year old defender has rejected a number of offers, going by reports, and talks are said to be at a complete standstill, so manager Graeme Murty, who himself admitted in January that he would have offered departed defender Danny Wilson a new contract had it been his call, has told Bates in no uncertain terms that he isn’t entirely thrilled with the ex-Raith Rovers’ stopper’s stance.

He said:

“Let’s not downplay the fact that you play for Rangers. The scale of this club should not be underestimated by anyone because it’s a fantastic stage for you to go and show your ability – which David has done. But he should never forget that this place here is something special.”

A very slight hint that Bates has probably already managed to peak in his career, and the only way from here would be down.

He went on:

“What I will say is, I think it’s reinforced this week, with Bruno, with Declan, with Jason, with Russell, with Jamie Murphy all getting into international squads, that you can actually realise some of your aims, if not most of your aims, at this football club. And this football club, the scale of this football club should never be taken for granted – albeit there is money to be made, there are opportunities elsewhere, and I’ve no doubt people’s heads will be turned.”

A gentle prod at the idea that Bates has been offered bigger money by someone else and, just like Alfredo Morelos, has had his head turned.

Rangers’ options at the back are so poor that Bates actually has some clout in these negotiations, and he and his agent are evidently aware of Rangers’ weak position and are seemingly trying to get more money by using interest elsewhere as a bartering tool.

Whether Rangers would consider him to be worth that extra wage remains to be seen.

  1. He isnt worth that Extra Wage!
    …He aint Exactly Butcher/Gough

And where did we get him from :
    RAITH ROVERS!
    …Not Exactly the Bright Lights

    • Since when did it matter a 🐒 flying f… what Club he came from? We can’t exactky but quality CB’s from Juve or Milan can we.. I think he does the basics well and if he’d still been on the pitch we wouldn’t have lost the OF and probably the Killie game.. That said he’s playing a dangerous game as he could get the Spanish Archer

    • The incomparable Jim Baxter was bought from Raith Rovers.
So let's not get too carried away about where players come from.
Ability and wanting to play for the jersey is surely what counts. If the lad thinks he is not being paid what he is worth, fair enough go elsewhere.
That is his choice, many before him have done so and regretted it. Perhaps he will too. It's his choice.

  2. Don't care where he came from he can head back he's woefully over rated.
    Could get better much better!!!

  3. The club have offered him what they think he is worth. On top of that he gets the opportunity to play for a massive club.
He is entitled to move on if it's money that motivates him in his footballing career. He won't be the first footballer to be wholly motivated by money, nor the last. Look how many players earn massive wages and don't even get a game (e.g. sub goalkeepers) Or he can stay continue with his development here, and maybe even be a part of a successful future.
Either way, only he can determine his future and success in his career.
