Walter

For those under a rock recently, the SFA have targeted the Old Master Walter Smith as new manager.

On the surface Ibrox Noise and Rangers fans should be delighted with this – the national team finally getting a true Bluenose and therefore some real tangible influence in the national regime at last, while the likelihood that our best Scottish players will find themselves restored to playing for their country.

But, of course, it is not as black and white as this.

First off, why do we have this nagging feeling that Walter, if indeed he is targeted, is interested, and does accept, will get indoctrinated into the ways of the SFA and will overlook the best Govan has to offer? The outrage we can already predict when Cummings, or a fit Dorrans, or a fit Jack, or an in form Jamie Murphy get overlooked in favour of Griffiths, Armstrong, Brown, you name it.

But that is pure conjecture and we hope we are miles off base.

What is not conjecture though is that the SFA want him – this creates two issues in our minds;

One, why did he not come back to Rangers if he is willing to come back to Scotland? Yes, the NT has less work involved, but the man is the absolute titan where Rangers are concerned and fact is no one would have objected had he taken over after Pedro, or even Warburton. We would, honestly, be heartbroken if he was unwilling to return to Ibrox but is happy to go back to the cesspit of the national team.

One loves him, one hates all things Rangers. You do the math.

Secondly, if he did indeed want a Rangers return, what on earth were the club playing at not taking him up on his interest? If one guy can turn Rangers around into the best team in Scotland, it is Walter. A maestro. Yet if he was interested in the job, why were the club not interested in his services. Sources close to the board did reveal that Rangers were unlikely to bring Walter back, but we cannot for the life of us figure out why not.

Instead we are left with a Rangers managerial situation which still does not convince many – comments on the site frequently argue that Murty is not the right man, and generally it is hard to dispute that given the guy is a flipping youth coach who himself admitted he did not join Rangers to become manager. The team flirts occasionally with being decent and we get hope, but then a stinker of a result crushes us again.

Walter is just another level and what we would not have given for him back at the reins.

    • Stevie – you weren't a happy bear then when Souness was revolutionizing not just a very tired Rangers set up – but the whole of scottish football, when Walter was guiding us to 9 in a row, or when Murray was sanctioning the signing the likes of Gazza and Laudrup. Murty and King surpass all of that for you do they? Dearie dearie me…….

    • ok thats a bit strong ,but murray, souness ,smith ,made a right balls up .where have they been for the last six years rangers greats ,we have all got an opinion ,money, money , money they all jumped when there was no more money to be had

  3. Walater should have being brought back to steady the ship for the season he may not be the boards choice the board have got to realise their there to put the intresteam of the club first and not self interest they have a duty to the clubs supporters by placing the best manager in place .

  4. Gents.
Walter wasn't keeping well for a while more than once.
Your asking a 70 year old to take on the Rangers job.
Really U want to kill him!??
Scotland job 5 games a year instead of per month.
He's a legend and still doing plenty behind the scenes at Ibrox, Where do U think Jimmy Nicholl came from!?

    • Correct Walter has a legacy at rangers and that's how it should remain a legend among our support. If he takes the Scotland job I wish him all the best. And hope he can bring us on if not then so be it.

    • Got to agree Robbie, Walter has had his time and what a time it was. Managing Rangers is more than just a job and the pressure on his family and his health would be to much for him and that's why we should let him be. He is a true blue but also a true Scotsman. He took stick for leaving scotland for Rangers from every other fan outside our own and i feel he may have unfinished business , ending his career by taking Scotland to a world cup would be the cherry on the cake for him. I saying that how great would it be if Walter was the man to stop 9 in a row , we can dream. Good luck Walter

  5. I wasn't saying keep him permanently just to steady the ship whilst we try to find a suitable replacement I hope he gets the Scotland job team him up with Stuart mccall and let's see celtic squirm when they don't get picked we need to replace murty during the closed season .

  6. Wow is everyone against us atm? Walter is a hero at our club, but also an older gentlemen. We lost one game at the weekend and all of a sudden it’s all bad and we need help. Murty is doing a good job and last night showed it. Yes it wasn’t easy to watch but we won and another clean sheet. We’ve had a lot of them the last while as well. Things are getting better

    • Stuart i generally agree that we should be giving Murty some support. He is fixing a broken squad and learning on the job. He is tactically fighting against more experienced managers and is holding his own. Last night could have been different though if Connor Sammon could finish his dinner. Wasnt the best of games but we need to give him time, he is integrating a lot of new players.

  7. Sir Walter typifies everything Rangers for me. He is Mr Rangers for me. When I think of my favourite Ranger, strangely it is not a player it's the godfather.

I don't see him wanting to come back to a full time, six day a week job, constantly on call.
I would love if he wanted it because he is the greatest manager I'll ever see manage our club.

If he takes the Scotland role. Good luck to him. That is the only type of job I see him going back for.
