Is high profile January star signing ready?

Article by: Richard, for Ibrox Noise

Graeme Murty certainly sees something he likes about midfielder  21-year-old Greg Docherty who is from Milngavie and is a life-long Rangers supporter.

Rangers secured the deal after something of a soap opera, but got the self-confessed Rangers fan for the price Hamilton asked at around £650,000.

The highly energetic, tough tackling young midfield player is wanted at Ibrox for the 2nd half of the season to add a bit of Scottish bite and steel to the team.

Let’s be honest at Ibrox Noise, the lack of tackling ability in our team over the last five years has bordered on pathetic!

Jason Holt’s tackling ability is nil and his passing is just as bad. He would never start in any of my Rangers teams. What do you expect from a player who Hearts were happy to sell to us for only £29k?

Young Greg joined the Hamilton academy squad at the age of 9 and turned professional in October 2012, making his senior debut on 7 December 2013.

In April 2015 he signed a new contract with the club, until the summer of 2017 and scored his first senior career goal on 9 May 2015, an 85th-minute equaliser in a 1–1 home draw against lowly Partick Thistle.

In season 2015-16 he played a total of 36 games and scored 2 goals, so he certainly is not a goal scoring midfield player.

In 2016 -17 he played a further 37 matches for the Douglas Park side and again only managed 2 goals, so maybe he will be our Scott Brown type player, who can get about the park, winning balls for others to play and help Rangers make things happen.

On 28 May, 2017 he scored the only goal of the two-legged 2016–17 Scottish Premiership play-off tie against Dundee United, ensuring Hamilton would remain in the top division for the next season.

He obviously has good potential as he received his first call-up to the Scotland under-21 team in September 2016 and made his debut on 5 October 2016, in a UEFA Championship qualifier defeat away at Iceland.

After Docherty was left out of the under-21 squad in September 2017, it was suggested in media reports that he may instead play for the Republic of Ireland.

In 2017-18 he has so far played in 25 matches for Hamilton and scored 3 goals, so hopefully he can tackle and win the ball for others to score.

We now wait and see when Graeme Murty starts to use him in the XI. Could he start v Hibs? Watch this space.

  1. He looks a decent player and should be pushing for a starting berth.
Not to sound negative, but some of these articles are becoming nothing more than a copy and paste exercise from Wikipedia - see above and Jimmy Nicholl article

  2. I don't understand why there's ANY questions on him being ready. None.

Holt busts his ads every game for Rangers. Again sorry I can't agree on him either.

  4. Docherty needs time to settle in, far too soon to assess him at this stage.
As for our Captain Holt, at least he won his first game as Captain, whereas Danny Wilson failed. Holt is my first choice as he is the only box to box player in the midfield that assists both attack and defence.
Think Ibrox Noise should concentrate on the charlatans who are stealing wages every week at Ibrox, like Kranchar, Halliday, Herrera, Hodgson for example!!

  5. Get off Holt's back . Give it a month and you will be asking if Docherty was worth the money

  6. Holt has played well since back in team. Might not be the biggest lad but doesn’t shy away. Not sure why he would be the centre mid we focus on when talking about poor performance for pounds. Think we have done ok on that one.

  7. In regards to post about Docherty, yes he is ready and will be a mainstay in the team GM is building. Kind of player we should have been buying in the Summer.

  8. Docherty is a Beast!
Stick him in the middle of the park and he will run the show! 👌

So talented, bags of potential, only 22
