What can THIS Rangers XI do until May?


Obviously this is preliminary, and naturally manager Graeme Murty is going to have his own ideas about his preferred XI, but with the influx of new players now steadily flowing through the Ibrox front door, we can certainly play around with some new selections and posit what we believe they can do.

The one thing becoming clear is Murty intends to try a 4-2-3-1 formation. Whether this will manifest itself as a 4-3-3 at times or a 4-5-1 at others time will tell, but the baseline spine is definitely the 4-2-3-1.

So, what XI would Ibrox Noise pick as our strongest, and what do we believe it can do for the remainder of the season?

Well the reality is, despite Uncle Walter’s obvious brilliance as a manager, those three key signings the old master made (Ehiogu, Thomson and Weir) in January 2007 proved vital to the start of 3IAR. Those signatures turned us into Simply the Best team in Scotland – which shows what top quality and wise acquisitions can do. Is it too optimistic to think the quality of player both signed up and on the horizon can now have a fantastic second half of the season and do exactly as Jason Cummings expects and push Celtic?

What do you guys think of this XI in aforementioned 4-2-3-1?

Foderingham; Tavernier, Martin, Wilson, John; Docherty, Goss; Murphy, Windass, Cummings; Morelos

It is simply impossible to fit all our best/available players in. McCrorie, Jack, O’Halloran, Bates, Wallace et al. And the likes of Kranjcar, Rossiter, and Candeias are around too.

The fact is this is Murty’s Rangers now. Do not expect any loyalty to Caixinha players or Warburton players. He will be picking his own team and Jack, McCrorie and Bates have absolutely no guarantee they will be selected.

But the depth is starting to look like something akin to a Rangers squad. We need dilemmas and headaches.

The only way to have a proper Rangers is having great players in the team, and great players on the bench.

  2. I think we will have two line ups (systems) depending on the quality of the opposition.

    Tougher games I'd go with:
    Foderingham
    Tavernier, Alves, Martin, Wallace
    McRorie
    Candeias, Jack, Dorrans, Murphy
    Morelos
    Subs: Alnwick, Wilson, John, Goss, Holt, Windass, Cummings

    Easier games I'd go with:
    Foderingham
    Tavernier, Alves, McRorie, Wallace
    Jack, Dorrans
    Windass, Cummings, Murphy
    Morelos
    Subs: Alnwick, Martin, John, Goss, Holt, Candeias, Miller

    And that leaves the below players on the fringes:
    Gk. Kelly
    Def. Cardoso, Bates, Hodson
    Mid. Halliday, Barjonas, Kranjcar
    Att. O'Halloran, Herrera

    I also know some people wouldn't start Alves, Wallace, etc. But I'm ok with rotations of that kind of set up, playing players on form, for example.

    I'm happy with the recent recruitment drive. I'd just prefer more guaranteed starters being bought. Only Murphy, and maybe Cummings and Martin will be starters for me. If we believe we can buy Goss and he proves the business, maybe him also (I personally don't see this being achieved). Is Jones, Docherty, Naismith, and others we are being linked with going to improve our first eleven? I for one don't think so. Docherty may be an exception but I don't see it being a massive difference.

  3. Very happy bear way the new signings,linked signings ,most of all over the moon with the signing of Cummings. 2 strikers who will give 110% n very Mobile n they are going to cause havoc n I can’t wait to see it.
    One thing for sure I’m glad I don’t have to pick the team.
    Good times ahead really buzzing can’t wait to go out n show aw the haters what gers are about.
    I honestly think in the summer we will b seeing an even better quality of player coming in, new sponsors,new merchandise deal to bck it up amazing how things can change in 4-6 weeks. WATP!! 🔴⚪️🔵

  4. If it was up to me i would play cummings and morelos as a partnership two man strikeforce,but then i am old school and i think 4 4 2 is the way the game should be played.

  5. Foderingham: best we've got but need better for next season.
    Tavernier: much improved but probably needs to play right mid with solid full back behind him. Don't sell cheap.
    Martin: not convinced he's the answer. Norwich fans glad to get rid.
    Wilson: showing signs of previous potential but needs to maintain recent form.
    John: Wallace on all cylinders all day long. Best deployed further forward.
    Docherty: not sure we'll get him.
    Goss: a QPR player. We should develop our own players like McCrorie and Jack before developing players from other clubs.
    Murphy: hopefully will do the business while being pushed by O'Halloran, Candeias and John.
    Windlass: may not be here but that's definitely his best position. Hold out for £1.5m.
    Cummings: hopefully do the business while being pushed by O'Halloran and others depending on tactics.
    Morelos: first pick and will take off with the right support. Let's not do anything stupid like selling him.
    In short a definite improvement on the squad and hopefully the starting 11 before the window but we've said that before.
    Longer term there is still dead wood to get rid of and in the summer window we need to target a couple of top class players for decent money with a couple of Bosmans. We need to stop trying to solve all our problems in one window and instead try a gradual improvement over several windows.

  8. Gotta play McCrorie in holding role, has been consistently good since he started there. New signings should have to earn their spot but would have Murphy over windass and Cummings in alongside morelos. Got options finally and game changers on the bench who can make an impact. Pleased with business so far
