Rangers contract offer for defender as English side makes move…

Rangers had better get rising star David Bates’ new deal signed ASAP after reports emerged this morning that Chris Coleman’s Sunderland are interested in a cut-price deal for the 22-year old whose contract expires this summer.

The young defender has recently starred for the side, impressing to MOTM levels against both Aberdeen and Celtic, enough in fact to suggest he could be a first-team regular over the coming years if such form continues.

But evidently this has attracted the attention of other sides, and Coleman’s Championship outfit are keen to get back to the Premier League as soon as possible.

The stopper was signed from Raith Rovers after being an initial loan, an 18 month contract being the terms, and while he struggled a little early on, he has bloomed under Graeme Murty and talks regarding a new deal are said to have been under discussion.

Murty has confirmed fellow stopper Danny Wilson and attacker Josh Windass are being considered for new deals as well, which forces the suggestion other players are too – with Bates being a free this summer, Rangers will likely be keen to get him wrapped up long term especially given the likelihood of Bruno Alves’ departure to Benevento.

  1. Can't agree more young Bates is a lovely young man I have spoken with him a few times .He has real potential as the new type of modern CH or RB , pace can pass the ball and reads the game very well …Please Murts get it done

  2. It's not that long ago we were having the same debate over Hardie, now out on loan till the end of his contract.
Perhaps our manager & coaching staff think that the both of them are not of Rangers quality or Wilson #2 is a better young option??
Strange one this why they weren't offered extensions the same time as the McCorie brothers!!

One thing is for sure there will be a massive clear out this summer,
Time will tell if Mr Bates names on the fire sale!!!…

    • Very valid point Robbie mate!

Say Murty goes with Martin & Wilson as our 2 CB’s we still need another 2 CB’s for cover. Bates McCrorie as cover are more than adequate enough..Like you I was surprised they didn’t get extensions at the same time as the McRorie bros.

It all comes down to having the money in place to up the wages. Then you’ve got to arrange meetings with said players & agents. All this will be under the DOF umbrella will it not?

Will be interesting to see who gets extensions and who doesn’t and who’s found to be heading out the exit.. Good CB’s cost money that’s why I think we should continue there development..

  3. Well, the question is,,, do you want Rangers to win the league before shellic get 10 in a row? For the record, I most certainly do.
Now, next question. Are Bates and Wilson the centre halves that will help to deliver us the league from shellic?
In case you forgot, we are 3rd place in the league?, not a close second!
There are a lot of fans wanting to give mediocre players contracts to deliver mediocre performances that will not win us the league.
So if all Rangers fans accept that 2nd, 3rd, 4th place is good enough from now till after shellic get 10 in a row, if the Rangers fans are happy to watch inconsistency week in, week out, getting beat by Dundee, Hamilton, Kilmarnock etc,,, then by all means, give Wilson, Bates and Windass and all the other mediocre players further contracts, but you will never win the league with them in our team! But hey, as long as your happy with that folks, go ahead and back those players.
Our defence is the weakest part of the team, I hope Martin fills a gap, but he needs a quality centre half beside him.

    • Jimbo.
I was trying to be gentle FFS!!

I pretty sure the he's one of our own brigade are not going to like the next window one little bit.
Alas quality not mediocrity makes the fat lady sing!!

    • Best and honest reply ive seen on here, yip, they are very average players and wouldn't lose sleep if all got sold on, if we play them week in week out we will continue to lose ground to the mhanky mob, hopefully with these new signings tho and a few others then we can pose a real challenge to the beggars

    • Think it would be a massive mistake to let Bates go , he has the potential of great centre half who won't be mediocre ! A young Terry Butcher in the makings ? Wilson also is shaping up to be more like the player he always threatened to be , so get him signed up sharpish ! Wheres the money to sign all these ready to go top quality players ? It's not there lads , so lets build .

    • Jimbo, surely you cannot put David Bates in the same category as Terry Butcher. For a start Terry got his first cap for England at 22 and later became the English captain. Terry was a pure born leader and a winner. Bates is none of these at 22. Potential at 22 years of age? We use the word "potential" for players aged between 16-19 year old.
I don't doubt Bates gives it his all, and believe he is an honest Rangers man, but that alone won't win us the league.
As for Wilson, he let fat boy Kris Boyd score 2 past him on the game he was given the captains band. He was rank rotten in that game, as he has been in many games this and last season! These are the games that have us languishing in an embarrassing 3rd place with the second highest budget in Scotland. Wilson is no leader and does not command the respect of his team as a leader. He is the quietest man on the park, which is certainly not Rangers Captain material. I'd def give Martin the armband if Alves is unfit or leaves!

  4. some fans don't know what they want, on one hand claim reckless spending led to our troubles and on the other hand some claim youth and careful spending will prevent us from stopping 3 in a row. NO NEED TO FEAR THE INVISIBLES as natural order will take place soon.

  5. It will be a mistake to let Bates go he is young and a good player, will we be better off with the ones we now have on loans?time will tell and Bates has plenty years in him there is not much money to be made by selling him as the going rate for players in Scotland is still under 1 mill unless we do it in CL i say hold him he will be a big player.

  6. You have to laugh… Danny Wilson could be away Stateside if reports are true from Rangers… Bates ain’t signed a new deal yet and now Murty says Alves is an integral part of the Team… Jackonory couldn’t make this news up ffs… Things could go shit shape real quick if that’s the case…

  7. Just heard Wilson is leaving, are we getting a fee for him, if not force him to stay till the end of his contract.
