Former Chelsea star suddenly in top four for Rangers manager

Former Chelsea midfielder Gus Poyet’s odds to become Rangers manager have slashed overnight, with the Uruguayan now a stunning 16/1 to take office in Govan.

As previously covered by Ibrox Noise, the ex-Brighton manager is an extremely underrated coach, and with experience at the highest levels from his playing days, he has entered into the serious reckoning for new manager at Ibrox.

While the notion of ‘foreigner’ seems to now terrify fans (understandably) Poyet is a coach who has actually been a surprisingly safe pair of hands in management (League One winner, over 60% win rate in Greece), and has a slightly unfair reputation of damaged goods.

Having a look at his managerial competency and the figures are far from unimpressive and Rangers could certainly do worse.

His being a free agent always helps, and the reputed £800k to free Aberdeen boss Derek McInnes could well be a factor in the delay over securing him; hence acquiring a fairly inexpensive free agent with experience of British football at all levels might be viewed as a shrewd piece of business by the board.

  1. NO MORE FOREIGNERS,PLEASE, RANGERS. Gus Poyet was a good player, and not a disgrace as a manager–but WHAT DOES HE HAVE THAT GRAHAM MURTY HAS NOT GOT??? Stop wasting time, Rangers Board, and appoint Murty immediately. We cannot afford the £ 1 million that Aberdeen want for McInnes, as that would reduce money available for the January transfer window. And we DO NOT WANT ANY MORE SO-CALLED SOFT LOANS TO KEEP PROPPING THINGS UP. (there is clearly an agenda here-to give these Directors many shares in return for the soft loans). We do NOT wat, the idiot Steve McLaren, the expensive McInnes, the unknown Mr. Proud Homme, or Giovanni, who may have done OK in Dutch football–but that is totally different from Scottish Football. Appoint Murty NOW–and DO US ALL A FAVOUR!!!!

    • Agreed , definitely no foreigners , even if they were Gers men . If not McInnes , then must be McLeish , with Murty kept on as a first team coach .

  2. Can't understand the no foreigner malarkey!!
McInnes doesn't know how to beat the unwashed.
Murty is a coach not a Manager and not ready for the step up as yet.
Poyet,GVB or De Boer are NOTHING like Pedro* Good players would come play for any of them.

If you think McLean & Walker coming to Ibrox will win us the leauge U better all think again because it certainly won't, there mediocre at best.
We need a high profile manager and all it brings with them!!!

  3. Fare comments. I agree there issue a financial agenda being played out and that is worisome. I hoped this type of game would have left with Ashby. As for football, with the new DOF I'd imagine we need a coach and not a manager. The skills required are man management and tactics. Sure he will have input to who comes into the squad but it's not 100% his decission. Times are changing.
