Ex-Celtic man left reeling on Rangers following ‘trial by TV’

Following the infamous episode of BT Sport in which notorious pundit Chris Sutton managed to interrogate Rangers manager Pedro Caixinha several times and without moderation from anyone on the panel, including the disappointingly quiet Ally McCoist, it was noticeable how much the climate changed last night.

Following the former Celtic striker once again laying into the Portuguese for being a ‘soor ploom’ from the dugout (it later emerged the ex-Nacional boss has the flu) and not being active enough in response to his team, we have to praise host Darrell Currie for holding the notoriously mouthy ex-England forward to account infinitely more vigorously than we have yet seen.

The ignominious one was once again trashing Caixinha, stating how things were clearly ‘wrong’ and how his demeanour on the bench was evidence of this, when Currie, evidently either instructed by his bosses or personally having had enough of Sutton gaining a free ride, questioned him as feverishly on his opinion as Sutton himself had on Pedro all those weeks ago.

Currie refused to back down, asking him how differently Pedro should have been, and how Sutton could justify his opinion, while at one point saying Sutton’s name very slowly and deliberately.

And being interrogated himself actually had Sutton on the ropes – he could not fathom a decent retort and at one point was reduced to extremely unconvincing one word replies, while looking decidedly shaken and riled.

We have to applaud Currie for being the first person on any show Sutton has actually been on to genuinely take the questioning to the man, rather than letting him off the hook – while it was hardly quite trial by TV, it made a refreshing change to see the ex-Blackburn striker on the back foot for once.

He needs to be held to account more like this, and when pushed, it is evident his opinion is not based on a lot of rational thought.

This may be seen by many as a ‘non-story’ but we complain often enough about how his scurrilous tabloid views go unchallenged – well this trend may have been bucked last night.

We expect more instances of this in the future.

  1. Yes Chris Mutton was put in his place a little.

We should start a campaign to get him from working on Rangers BT Sport games.

He spoils the games for us with his bias Celtic Views always against the 'Gers.

  2. Chris Sutton, ex England forward only played for the a team once, never scored a goal and was never picked again. What a wanker.

  3. sutton had admitted publicly that he is still gutted about septic losing the spl title on the last day in 2003 .he has a hatred of rangers that is obvious too see .but he is no longer an employee of celtic he works for bt so he should try be as unbiased as possible .there are ex celtic players who manage too be impartial as they possibly can such as davie provan ,andy walker etc etc .sutton is just a bitter twisted man who should be replaced.thats my opinion and its not going too chadnge anytime soon

  4. They're potentially going to lose viewers if Sutton isnt reeled in. They know this and it is why Currie was told to address the matter.

  5. Ironically they were right. 4 goals and only one celebrated and it was his country man. If the reports are right and he hasn’t went through only the Scottish players then Pedro is putting himself against everyone else. Most have been saying he needs more Scottish players but that won’t happen if he’s always gonna blame them for his mistakes

  6. Currie like David Tanner ex of Sky are both big Rangers fans and both have bitten their tongues over the years doing a professional job, more than can be said of other so-called neutral employees by BBC and other media,Alan Brazil, Stan Collymore, Chris McLauchlan to name a few. So maybe Darrell took it upon himself to at long last stick up for Rangers.
Sutton, like Andy Walker and other ex-Celtic players can't and don't hide their bias, if an ex Rangers player praises our club they are soon ousted. Generally though ex Rangers players are fair, more than can be said for others, it was noticeable on BT that Craigan was the pundit pushing for video footage of Penas elbow to be looked at, he went on continuously for about 20 mins during the commentary.

  7. Currie seemed to lose a bit of his composure and his abnormally frantic questioning was evidence of that. He clearly has some difficulty in competing with Sutton and his frustration with that seemed to show. In contrast, Thomson and Butcher were even-handed and very competent. One up for Sutton, I think…..again.

  8. We shouldn't acknowledge him !! When he played for them my Celtic supporting mate was with his son and seen him and Hartson, Sutton walked right bye them my mate got Hartson for photo and said to him wtf is that big arrogant cunt all about raging !! Big Hartson said he's English pal never mind him… He went to Chelsea for 10 million went to them for 6 proberly made 30k a week for the best part of eight years but went bankrupt what a fanny lol

  9. Forget about Sutton and all the rest. There is a negative hidden trap here that keeps the debate at a very low and unproductive level. Get on with constructive comment and discussion about the future.

  10. Sutton is who he is and we all know his background.
I differ from the other folks above as I think Sutton for all his massive faults, still calls it as he see's it just as we all do, He is far more supportive of us than either Ally or butcher imo.

  11. I would cross the street if I seen that twat Sutton! But rangers are giving him ammunition and we need to address the real problem Ped ? In my own opinion he is on a road to nowhere he will be let go by the summer. And anyone who thinks different please explain to me why he will turn it around

  12. Grow a pair guys!

Who cares what Sutton or any other pundit says. They after all are doing a job and Sutton deliberately makes controversial statements – otherwise he would not be on tv.

I really miss the days when Celtic were the embarrassing paranoid ones and we could laugh at them. Stop making is the joke.

Life is such that people are always going to say things you don't like, being a man (or a woman) means you should be big enough to take it.

  13. To shut Futton up, all we have to do is win our games. Unfortunately it's our poor displays that gives those people ammunition to slate our team. Therefore, I am more concentrated on our team than listening to a loud mouthed fud!

  14. To be fair hes quite hard on celtic too when he commentates on our games. He says it like it is and its quite entertaining. I suspect if he was ex rangers i wouldnt be so keen so i can see where your coming from
