SPL manager – “We won’t sell to rivals, except Celtic”

Aberdeen manager Derek McInnes has amusingly confirmed he will not sell Kenny McLean to Rangers as he would not want to ‘sell to a rival’, coming just weeks after he sold Jonny Hayes to Celtic.

Rangers have been linked with the Scotland international for some considerable time, and Aberdeen have stood firm with their claim he is not for sale, but following Aberdeen selling to a rival in Celtic with the Irish winger, McInnes has done a ‘Hibs’ and claimed he does not sell to rivals.

Rangers fans will amusingly remember the nonsense from Alan Stubbs and Hibs back in the day when they refused to sell to a Championship rival; well McInnes has gone one step further by selling to a rival while claiming he will not.

“I’ve commented on it already (selling McLean to Rangers); we have no intention of selling any of our players to any of our rivals especially, you know that’s… you know I’ve commented before on that. Nothing’s changed, they’d be completely wasting their time.”

So, in short – they will sell to no rivals unless they are called Celtic. Ok Derek!

  1. Think you have to read that as Rangers are a rival Celtic isn't. McInnes is basically stating the obvious that selling a player to Celtic or not will have little if any influence on how well the two clubs end up against each other , whereas a shift in balance between Aberdeen and Rangers could be effected by the movement of a player between the clubs.

    • Especially when they get mackay stevens for 150k and christie on loan again for another season. Aberdeen give celtic a player who would have left anyway and won't offer anything more than celtic already had and in return Aberdeen get two 1st 11 players. Celtic in turn make Aberdeen stronger and increase the chance that Aberdeen finish 2nd again. All in all they are both joined at the hip.

    • I know Aberdeen pretty well and I'd say the attitude is as much anti-Rangers as pro-Celtic, if not more so.

  2. Possibly the difference is that because Celtic have more money, they offer clubs the proper going rate for a player. Rangers are continually offering every team less than they are valued at by the clubs.

Hearts never said no to Rangers, they said it would take a bid of £1m to get him and we offered them half that price. Again they said £1m, they never said not at any price.

Rangers probably made Aberdeen a stupid low offer for Kenny McLean, who personally, I don;t think we need him with a packed midfield already.

    • What about hibs? Rangers offer 500k and 250k in addons for Allan, when Celtic then bought him for 400k…

    • Was well documented at the time
      ibroxnoise.co.uk/2015/08/rangers-make-third-bid-for-scott-allan.html?m=1

    • Sorry my figures were slightly off but we still offered more than Celtic did. It was jist clear that these teams won't sell to us except for over inflated prices

    • Even if that were true, Stuart, you're missing the point. Hibs and Celtic were in different leagues at the time. We were in the championship along with hibs then, so we were legitimate rivals and Celtic weren't. Common sense if you ask me.

    • The point was that Richard was saying we aren't offering enough money but we are, they are just not playing ball, Aberdeen at the end of the season won't even be in our league (as such) time for these wee clubs to stop pretending there as good or better as us, were the bigger club and always will be, and hopefully at the end of the season they will be reminded of us, ironically these same teams want more money than value off us, but are the same guys that will moan that it's unfair that we have more money to spend than them

    • According to the BBC our first offer for Allan was 175k, the second was upped by 50k to 225k. I don't know what our 3rd and final offer was, but I highly doubt we offered more than 300k. At the same time Rotheram put in a 400k bid for him, but Allan rejected the chance to move there. Celtic's offer included Hibs getting Liam Henderson on loan. As Gaz says, Hibs were quite right not to sell to their main rival in the Championship, just like Aberdeen are quite right to not want to sell their best players to us in the Premiership. We would do the same. The point Richard was making is that we'd secure Scottish-based players a lot more easily if we didn't fanny around with joke bids for them (bids that we all know are a joke).

  3. As ScotsWhaHae said, we should bide our time when it comes to signing McLean (and maybe even Walker). We're looking strong in midfield and have some very useful youngsters like Barjonas, Atakayi and Burt if we need reinforcement. If we can pick up McLean and Walker for nothing later, I'd put whatever money we have into a proven striker and a defender (I'd also bring in McGregor – if he's available – for Foderingham).

Meanwhile in Southend, Rob Kiernan had his debut last night. They lost 0-2 to Div. 2 minnows Newport County. It's gonna be a very long 3-year contract…

  4. I know guys its the same old story about US !!!Its typical of the lack of respect he has showed Rangers He has always given us short shrift in all our dealings with him, I for one would never want to see him at Ibrox EVER he's done nothing Won Nothing …for all the years we were in the wilderness the Sheep Shaggers floundered huffed and puffed but couldn't blow the house down so Fuck Off I hope we give them the doing they deserve. Mc Clean would come to Ibrox in a heart beat …money talks especially to Aberdeen…. Mickey Mouse Set Up

  5. It's the hatred for rangers that stops clubs selling to us the Celtic propaganda machine makes sure of that with all the sevco crap and title stripping this lot are the ones that were quite happy to use EBTs with the Juninho but got good advice to make deal with hmrc after he left to pay tax hmrc another lot who said we don't do deals when Murray asked as for Aberdeen they would probably make a deal if you offered sheep instead of money

  6. Dare I say, and this is just a thought. Could it be Derek sees Rangers as a rival as he feels they can beat Rangers to second place? And giving Rangers one of his best players could hamper that.
Derek obviously thinks shellic are going to win the league easily, therefore giving them Hays wouldn't matter in his clubs quest for second place? Ergo, Derek doesn't see shellic as a rival.
That's the only logical way I could think for not parting with any of his players to Rangers, but giving them Hays to shellic.
He can keep his players as far as I'm concerned.

  7. On Carlos Pena – I saw a photo of him from training (top off). He has the body of a jaikie if you ask me, looks unfit. I read it was 3.5 million we paid, but somewhere else it was 2.2 million. Whatever million it is, it's shameful that he wasn't deemed fit enough for the first game of the season. We're doing well and I don't want to be negative, but that boy had better get his act together.

  8. If you don't pay the amount they want they're never going to sell. Celtic met the price named, we haven't.

  9. I think its clear. This is an admission that a.) Celtic are not rivals to them b.) They are aiming for the best of the rest. That is a fine lesson in ambition.

Hes quite right not to sell to us, i wouldn't.

Also, BillB, you are a diddy. Holding on to his players makes him a good manager.

Lets also not forget, Hayes is 30, his stock is about to start decreasing, cash in at the right time.

McLean is still in his prime.

I think we could get him if we put a serious bid in although i think we should be looking for a striker and possibly a right back.

    • Caol ?? ..Mc Innes is 2nd rate ..sacked everywhere and had we remained in the SPL he would have been bulleted there too

    • That may be true but you are lambasting him for refusing to let his star player join the club he is in direct competition with.

I am not particularly a fan of his but what i am even less of a fan of is this puerile mentality of wishing ill on people because of some manufactured grievance.

I.e. you talking about the perceived "short shrift" he has given us is nothing but a childish excuse to spout the nauseating and pathetic "no one likes us, we don't care" line. If this isn't a manifestation of our neurosis i don't know what is.

  10. Pretty pathetic from mciness and why I'd never want Derek happy with second mciness at Ibrox not for not selling us mclean but for being happy with 2nd

  11. It just goes to show what Mciness's ambitions are, he has already decided that his team and himself are at best, Second best,Thank God he never came to Rangers with that type of attitude, willing to sell to Celtic but no one else,I wonder if any other team offered the money for McLean would he sell, yes of course he would. It is a pure hatred for Rangers that has determined this statement, the wind of change is not far away and we will see then how many players he may have to sell, because really think Aberdeen apart from thinking about Rangers as rivals better start thinking about His as well.

  12. I hate the sheep more than our main rivals so the feelings mutual, we'll still be here afer they have long gone. we will always be biggger and stronger whatever obstacles they put in our way. onwards and upwards gers. As for mc Innes, I have only 2 words turncoat b*****d.

    • Turncoat to who?

You have a weird wee outlook. You seem to think that ex-rangers players are somehow undercover agents who should always be working towards 'the cause'.

  13. Exactly my thoughts. Mcinnes must be content to play for second best, if he doesn't see ra thellick as a rival.
What a rotten way to run a football team!

  14. Whatever re Mcinnes and Aberdeen, bit like Scottish Football in general, we are now out on our own mainly because of the money down south. The only chance we have is trying to win the league and qualifying for the champions league, signing the players mentioned will not make much of a difference. What is concerning is where any reported signing funds are coming from, got a bad feeling about our finances and there is nothing to suggest we are in a good financial position, tick tock on Mr King J

  15. Just be happy to be a gers fan to hell with the rest it's true they all hate us but I'm talking about rival supporters and so they should as we should hate them but at the end of the day it's football enjoy your team and support them always not like some people who jumped ship that some fans want back mcgregor no way do I want to see him back just a poseronly one I would welcome back was Steven davis
