The mercurial young star Rangers MUST keep

The mercurial young star Rangers MUST keep

While there were grounds for optimism following the recruitment of so many players and the exit of some unwanted surplus, a great deal of that positivity was dashed by events in Luxembourg. Rangers fans have been struggling for good news, so the signature of Graham Dorrans was a welcome boost as was Bruno Alves’ timely arrival yesterday in a Rangers shirt.

So here is another spot of sunshine for you all – Jamie Barjonas. Yes indeed, this 18 year old was briefly linked as a makeweight for Norwich’s Dorrans much to the justified outcry of a great number of Bears, but thankfully that deal went through while retaining the young midfielder’s services at Ibrox.

And the reason for the outcry was clearly seen at the tail end of last season when young Barjonas took to the SPL like a duck to water and managed to outclass the majority of his team mates in doing so.

Barjonas seems to have it all – he is a developing central midfielder who appears to have defensive capabilities and intelligence and maturity beyond his years. If Caixinha has done some things right since arriving at Ibrox, giving Barjonas a chance without a second thought was one of them.

He arrived in Firhill with a fine 20-minute cameo, in which he says he was instructed to go out there and play, but not forget his defensive responsibilities:

“The gaffer just said to go on, get the ball and play. Also to make sure I took care of the defence by sitting in front of the defence to let the ones in front of me get on the ball and play.”

The classic holding midfielder but with the dynamic range to press forward as well. At only 18 Barjonas looks every inch as capable as any player in the first team as of present. He has much to learn, and will make many mistakes, but on raw talent, he has every chance of becoming a serious future Ranger.

And that is good news for everyone. After the disappointment of a youth-reared talent in the form of Barrie McKay heading away following Billy Gilmour’s similar departure, retaining quality like Barjonas becomes even more important.

We do not pretend he will be the next Barry Ferguson, just like we do not claim Myles Beerman will become Arthur Numan – but the groundwork is there if cultivated properly for a very useful young player to burst through.

How far he can go in the game is up to him.

  1. Too true. I was hoping Pedro would be different and use more youth players, but it seems as if he already knows who he wants to play and Beerman, Wilson, Atakyi, etc. don't seem to be on that list. It's a pity, because Barjonas surprised me with his skill last season.

  2. Don't see the fuss with barones tbh couple of times I seen him looked average at best as for some of the other young players beerman against roberts at ibrox 😢😢😢😢😢

  3. I hope Liam burt gets a chance soon(lennon tried to get burt back to celtic before) or he will be off for peanuts.
