Aberdeen: “We won’t sell Kenny”

Reports have broken tonight that Aberdeen have given manager Derek McInnes assurances that Rangers target Kenny McLean will not be sold this window.

The Aberdeen boss has already lost star captain Ryan Jack to Pedro Caixinha, and following the Graham Dorrans saga Rangers made a move for Aberdeen’s creative midfield star, but the Dons rejected Rangers’ initial reported £500K bid for his services.

And now Dons chiefs have allegedly gone one step further, claiming that regardless of bid amount, McLean will remain an Aberdeen player come September 1st.

On the surface this seems a blow to Rangers’ ambitions, having struggled to secure Dorrans as it is, but it is more likely to be an attempt to force Rangers’ hand into bidding the reported £1.5M asking price for the former St Mirren player’s signature.

However with Rangers’ negotiations over other players of interest, it may well be that this one might be a busted flush. Depending on how accurate these latest claims are.

  1. It's really no surprise that Aberdeen won't deal with us. They're still spewing that Ryan Jack signed for us. I believe that if we want Scottish based players then they'll need to be signed on pre-contract agreements or be out of contract altogether. Let's hope McLean and Walker have the patience to wait it out. Mon the Gers

  2. I think it is more likely that we would sign him on a pre contract later . Hearts appear willing to deal with us on Walker it's more getting a price agreed. However if they are asking too much then again sign him on a pre contract. Dorrans is the one I would like to sign just hope we can get the deal done

  3. hit them with £1m and i bet he is on his way.and with all the players aberdeen have lost a force no more.lol

  4. Is it not more to the point that in trying to sign players like McLean and Walker, we should be looking at why they slipped the Ibrox net in the first place? It's fair enough wanting good young Scottish talent, I'm all for it, but we should be looking to our own development teams to be producing the McLeans, Walkers and Jacks. I want to see Hardie and his ilk involved. Cheaper too and we don't get held to ransom by other petty clubs happy to deal with anyone but us.

  5. Jan Kirchhoff, the 26-year-old and 6’ 5” German born footballer, who plays either centre-back or as a defensive midfielder for Sunderland has just been released.

    His International honours include: –

    German U18’s – 3 games + German U19’s – 8 games + German U21’s–18 games

On 7 Jan’16, Sam Allardyce brought Bayern Munich defensive player Kirchhoff to the Black Cats to stiffen up their weak defence. He signed an 18-month contract with Sunderland for a fee of around £750k, because he had been out injured for a while before the signing and Sam felt, he was worth taking a chance because of the money involved.

The big German was deployed as a defensive midfielder and earned plaudits for his precise tackling and passing and was voted the PFA Fans' “Player of the Month” for Apr ‘16 and his performances helped Sunderland to fight off relegation.

From January to May ’16, he played in 15 games for Sunderland in the Premier League but in season 2016-17 he only managed to play in 6 of their games, due to niggly injuries.

Unfortunately, the defensive cover man has a tendency to be injury prone. This is a bit worrying for a player in his mid 20's. However, if a team can find the right way to keep him fit (Steve Walker, the Rangers physio), they may indeed save some money for far more expensive players with his attributes.

I would suggest a 2-week-trial at Rangers to have a good look at him for free!

    • If it was £18m we got to bring in new players and for there wages then lets say we bring in ten players at a cost £8m and lets say ten players are on £10k a week wages another £5.5m and the players we still have lets another £3m in wages we got £1.5m left for one player and his wages.now who will we go for now.

    • Richard, very good shout, that's a couple of good players you have spotted leaving other clubs which I would certainly welcome to Rangers. As a fan of German football, I've seen Kirchhoff play a few times and is a very prominent and dominant player in CB and DM. Could certainly see him in our blue jersey. I hope your txting Pedro with these names? :),,

    • Same bet you if we do not get him then some other Scottish clubs could pay that money but after all the free players out there now you only need to have money to pay some good players there wages most Scottish clubs will go down that road nowadays.
