Rangers' summer window begins - two out two in?

Rangers manager Pedro Caixinha’s summer overhaul at Ibrox is set to get underway in earnest with increasing speculation that his first port of call is defence with veteran stopper Clint Hill and under-fire Rob Kiernan appearing as the first likely casualties of the transfer window turnover.

Hill is out of contract and while keen to sign a new deal, his absence from first team starts over the past two matches plus the delay in any new contract being presented does force the possible conclusion that Caixinha is not interested in him long term.

Meanwhile Kiernan has, injury or otherwise, completely faded from the first-team picture and does not look likely to remain at Ibrox next season after a frankly poor maiden season in the SPL. Far from a fans’ favourite, Kiernan was a mainstay under his Uncle Mark’s tenure but has found first-team starts less regular since the Bread expired.

As such it is entirely possible Caixinha’s big two defensive links, Cagliari’s Bruno Alves and Al-Gharafa’s (formerly) on loan Rashid Sumaila now free agent could be the Portuguese’s earmarked first choice defensive pairing for next season.

The two have been heavily linked to Ibrox over the past few days and with Caixinha’s obvious Portuguese connections accounting for Alves and his former charge of Sumaila presenting the Ghanaian international as another strong link not to mention Sumaila's agent's claim that Rangers have made contact, Rangers’ central duo could be completely new come the Europa League qualifier.

With the more than able Danny Wilson as an excellent third option and possibly David Bates as backup, Hill and Kiernan not to mention Philippe Senderos could be part of the summer clear out which Rangers fans hope will see wholesale changes more worthy of the shirt than the current incumbents.

  1. Having a little look of footage of both potential centre backs, if they took to the pace of the game up here, they look pretty soild and not scared to get in the way of the ball.

    1. Rashid Sumaila I agree. I seen some footage of him against Holland and other videos on YouTube and he is tough in the tackle no nonsense. Just what we've have been missing at the back. This is one for Bruno https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B43znyzkE6E

  2. Bates is nowhere near first team material, that was a shocking piece of defending for thistles goal. It's out on loan for that lad to learn his trade.

  3. Sumaila looks quick and strong... but... for me he's far too small and we need another wee guy like a hole in the head... first touch not too clever either and he'll not get away wae tackling like that in Scottish football. That said if we can get Bruno I'll be delighted he looks the part tae me...a big take no prisoners defender... that'll do me.

  4. Alves is another senderos. Lacks pace and is very rash. Granted he has better fitness levels but he is far too slow for the spl.

I can't comment much on the other target, although it's a huge step up in terms of pressure from gulf football.

  5. Hey Mr King, this is really exciting, it is clear you are already putting significant funds into the club to support our summer speding spree, all my mates are really concerned we just cant seem to get a season ticket, its only the end of May and already with Miller resigned and news above, who will stop us, Europa league after July, its a stick on with these announcements already made by Ped, come on Mr King, just do us a favour and resign before you know what.... do us all a favour. 6. Alves deal looks dead in the water going by Italian press reports. Alves quoted by saying he's happy where his is. San Siro for Maryhill can't blame him but... Liam Lindsey and Patterson a must surely at least they're tried & tested with bright futures, add that to the Youth coming through... Just need an experienced CB who can command the defence and take no prisoners, a midfield general and a prolific striker it's not much to ask for...Get a proper Scouting system in place is pivotal as Celtic are unrelenting in that respect..
