Is Warburton planning for the future?

This week Walter Smith claimed that Rangers needed to “take a gamble” in the
transfer market and risk going into debt to catch up with Celtic at the summit
of the Scottish Premiership. But with Old Firm rivals sitting pretty 20 points
clear at the top of the table and 1/1000 favourites to lift the title, Mark
Warburton was wise to say that the Gers would not be reckless this January. The
current manager has taken the right stance here, but is he looking towards next
season when Rangers should be challenging Celtic for first place?

A lot of Rangers fans are getting
pretty fed up with Warbs. Not only did he make some terrible signings in the
summer that have all since been failures, he doesn’t seem to be looking at the
current situation and making plans for the future either. Instead, he has
acquired a few loan players including Emerson Hyndman and Jon Toral, in what
can only be construed as an effort to keep the side ticking over. Rangers are
8/15 with
Betway to clinch the second spot this season anyway.
Shouldn’t the hierarchy be looking to sign players that could make an impact in
the years ahead?

It seems Smith and Warburton have
completely opposing stances on the current situation. Although many fans will
be pleased with the instant rise to the upper echelons of the league after only
just being promoted, Smith knows that Rangers supporters won’t be content with
second best for long. This season the title is out of reach, and Rangers have
been bested by Celtic all the way. But in the next campaign, the Light Blues
will be expected to challenge until the bitter end.

Warburton’s decision in the summer to
buy players that can only be described as “past it” confused and upset a lot of
fans. Joey Barton, an average midfielder at best, was the marquee signing. The
34-year-old made 6 appearances for the club before being ousted and has to go
down as one of the worst acquisitions in Rangers’ history. Philippe Senderos,
considered by some as up there amongst the poorest Arsenal players of the
Premier League era, has only made 2 appearances for the Ibrox club this term
after a dire start to the campaign. Jordan Rossiter was earmarked for his
strong potential, but he has only been afforded 3 starts in the league. Fans
don’t want careless business like this again, but they also don’t want
Warburton to shy away from signing players in January.
Although Celtic have a much larger
transfer budget than Rangers, their spending was a lot more astute. Rossiter
cost Rangers £250,000 and has barely been used. In comparison, Moussa Dembele
was signed to Celtic Park for £500,000, which in footballing terms isn’t a
great deal more. The 20-year-old has scored 9 goals and made 4 assists (see
video below) this season, and has attracted
interest from top clubs in Europe. Under contract with Celtic until
2020, the young striker is sure to be sold for an enormous markup in the
future.

These are the kind of additions that
Rangers should be aiming to bring on board, and Warburton said: “My personal
opinion is that, from where this club has been, it important that it builds
strong, solid financial foundations.” This is a fair point after the last few
years of turmoil, but it doesn’t really explain the decision to sign loan
players this month.

If Warburton doesn’t make some clever
moves soon that are designed to benefit Rangers in the long term, the calls for
his dismissal will get louder. This season second place will have to do, but
come August, Rangers need to have a side assembled that is capable of toppling
their old enemies.

  1. We are in 2nd place by a baw hair, if Aberdeen win ther game in hand they'll b 2nd , heartswho are on our tails have added four players n we could b handing over one of ours in ohalloran to one of our competitors in who we are fighting for a European spot, absolutely crazy!! You think (A) we ll sign players to make sure we get that Euro place. (B) not to strengthening a rival who are going for the euro place.
    (C) preparation for next season try to get players in which u know wud strengthen the team and are going to b long term ones (not loans) give them the rest of the season to bed in , a full pre season so they are gelled n ready to mount a challenge next season. But we are doing everything we shudnt b if u ask me its playing with fire!!.
Across the city on the other hand the leagues in the bag but they're looking to the future they don't need to sign anyone (for this season) but they have a wonky eye on the future.
Why are we not doing the same after all we are the ones in the rear view mirror gettin further n further away?
    FUTURE!!!!!!!

  2. Bluebells bang on.

And see this boy Dembelle, a lot of fans are saying never worth 20 million only playing in the spl but he's a French under 21 banging on the door of the first team and some of the goals he scores for the 21s are frightening, I pray to god they do punt him in summer, because if they get to CL next year and he scores a couple his value will double, CFs are hard to come by they aren't many top class ones about !! How me missed him I don't know ffs Warbs managed in the same league he played in.

And if MoH is goes on loan to Hearts our rivals for second place then it's time to call it a day, the guy can play if used correctly he's lighting quick and fit as a fiddle or was before Warbs got his hands on him…,

  3. Believe me, there are a bunch of guys I would like to see leaving Ibrox before O'Halloran. The manager is one of them.Tavernier,Waghorn,Forrester and Sanderos all in the one taxi.

  4. Senderos hasn't been given a chance. He got sent off at Parkhead through sheer stupidity, but he isn't the first player to ever do that. Apart from that, he did little wrong in that game. His CB partner, Kiernan, had made a string of mistakes. Two of which led to Celtic goals. The real villain of the Parkhead fiasco was MW. his tactics and selections were beyond comprehension.
Harry Forrester was Rangers best player up until he was inexplicably dropped.

  5. I think if ohalloran wanted game time I think if killie sell coulibaly fink that could b perfect for us n Kilmarnock are not in competition with us n he would play week in n week out.

  6. I'll say once again, what i've said over and over before, Warburton and Weir GET TAE FUCK NOW.
18 months ago when they waltzed through the doors of Ibrox, one of the very first things they done, was get rid of Darren McGregor – voted fans player of the year – reputedly because Warburton stated he was not fit enough to play in one of his teams!
Fast forward to last seasons' Cup Final. Warburtons pick of Kiernan got destroyed by the tarrier that is Antoupe Stokes whilst McGregor at the other end won everyghing in the air and had a solid game. Nit fit enough for our team though!! Now we are constantly watching on as they continue to a) Pick Tavernier defoite his failure at RB.
    b) pull Kiernan across to cover
    c) Danny Wilson, same at LB
    d) No. 29 has all the pace in the eorld go frighten any defence (remembering that our defence starts in attack, if No. 29 plays right through the middle, these defenders that constantly push forward to pressure our defence wouldn't be as quick leaving himon the halfway line) but we play a 38 year old headless chicken, who csn't finish, can't pass and can't control a ball….unbelievable!
Barton told Warbuon and Weir exactly what he thought oc gnem and their tactics at the Piggery…. so he gets the bullet!!
It is heart breaking watching ghis week in week out. I would not give these two £50k to soend in any transfer window, never mind any more.
And what hapoened in the past few days? Weir – who hasn't spoken a word as Assistant Manager at our club in the 18 months they've been here – holds a press conference n talks about Brentford, Everton and £100M that wokldn't guarantee success!!!
    Enough said….. Go NOW

  7. The Big problem we will have is selling our Scottish players if we got a offer for any one of them it would be a top price of £1 million we are seen as a Aberdeen Hearts etc you only get the big money for players when they play at the top table they must show shine in the Champions League before you get the 10/20 million plus for a player from the Scottish Leagues we have a very long way to go so we must keep knocking down the doors and keep moving forward.

  8. Another thing Aberdeen seemingly trying to get stevie may on loan why are we not trying to get him in? Tried n tested in this league scored goals for fun. Looks like we don't want this!!
