Are Rangers ready to spend a million?

With work beginning in earnest to secure next season’s squad, a serious question of budget arises.

Rangers do not expect to spend the figures of old such as upwards of £3M any time soon, but with recent signing Michael O’Halloran’s fee starting at £350,000 and rising to £500,000 based on various clauses, a competitive Rangers which can do the name justice in the Premiership is certainly desired by all those of a blue persuasion.

And to acquire such a quality of squad, are Rangers ready to really splash out on their first £1,000,000 player since admin this summer, whoever it may be, in order to upgrade the squad?

Naturally, most fans’ reaction to this is to trust the manager whatever he wants – and rightly so. It is thanks to Mark Warburton Rangers are in the enviable position of being miles clear at the top of the table, blip at Falkirk notwithstanding.

But if this means bidding a six-figure sum nearing a seven-figure one, on one player, to achieve the upgrade to the Premiership, are fans still content with such action? Are they ready for it – knowing that player might be judged differently to the rest?

Naturally this is conjecture, and as yet we have no way of knowing exactly what The Magic Hat’s summer window budget will be, but as Rangers close in on the top flight, there will come a time in the future, when in order to be serious about competing for the title, the likes of a seven figure sum will start to become a standard necessity, rather than an immediate risk.

Rangers have lived mostly on loans and Bosmans for four years now, making the idea of a marquee purchase beyond the expense of that laid out for O’Halloran quite an alien and slightly concerning notion.

The subject of spending within our means is rightly paramount, and never again should Rangers spend recklessly as in days gone past – but as the team mounts a challenge to compete credibly in the SPL, is a million pound player required as part of the armaments?

It is, of course, a rhetorical question; whatever Mark Warburton wants this summer, he will surely be granted, within reason. Warbs knows Rangers are not lavishly funded, and his skills have been with finding promising young loans and rejected gems from elsewhere, along with some excellent pre-contracts.

But in order to make that vital step up, to take the final push into the frontier of high-end SPL action, it may just be that he and chairman Dave King feel getting a player who comes close to that seven figures in value is vital as part of the long-term assault on the top tier.

Warbs has often talked about only getting players who add value, so spending around a million on one would surely take a very special case this summer – but it surely is not out of the question, if that is what the manager desires.

We shall see.

  1. I think if the manager wanted a million pound player he would go for him. Like the manager said loads of time, the players he buys MUST add value ON AND OFF the pitch!!

  2. Its not about hw much we spent on a player its jst makin sure we get the right personel so we r competetin for at least a top 3 spot next season. A player thats warbs wants contract cud b up or 6 mnths to go so u wont pay the players true value the accrington lads r cumin for a compensation fee whos to say sum1 wudnt pay a 7 figure sum for them if they had 2-3 years on a contract. So i dont think its about wat u spend its doin shrud buisness and as we ve already seen warbs is the man for that. In warbs we trust.

  4. mr king and co have done a great job with our club and im sure if mark wants a player no matter what the cost the money will be there, we all as fans have done a great job also and this just shows the world WE LOVE OUR CLUB AND WATP..

  5. I wouldn't like to see Rangers spend that much on a player at the moment. The reason being we are not out of the woods yet financially and we have to rid our directors of that "cee you en tee" in Newcastle.
Make no mistake that fat git is a sly, devious, cunning, rodent, and I don't think he will capitulate even though his own business and club are in trouble.
Warbs is a shrewd man and will choose his transfer targets to benefit Glasgow Rangers not supporters.
So until the time comes when the Gers are clear of people like fat ashley let us all trust our directors and management. Our time is coming.
    WE ARE RANGERS!

    • DONT GIVE THAT FAT GIT A PENNY HE THOUGHT OUR CLUB WAS A WALK OVER TO GET MORE FOR HIS PIGGY BANK,, ITS TIME THE NEWCASTLE FANS GOT SHOT OF HIM AS THE LOVE FOR THERE CLUB IS JUST FILLING UP HIS PIGGY BANK ALSO.GET ASHLEY OUT.

  6. Occurring to the most accurate of reports from the famous web site the septic blog. we have no money owe £17m and what are the sfa going to do about it. Man aren't we lucky to have such informative people on all things rangers.

  7. It's strange to think that it wasn't that long ago that this site and many who contributed were questioning King credibility because he wasn't throwing millions around. Good to see that most people can finally accept that King is one of us and that it would benefit no-one, least of all the club for us to start trying to buy success with silly money transfers.
Looking at it a different way how much would it cost us to buy players with the quality of Tavernier, Waghorn, Holt, Halliday or McKay. These guys cost us buttons but I reckon there is more than one player there that English Championship teams would pay more than a million for. If Warburton can uncover a few more gems of that quality, and remember he only had weeks before the start of this season to decide who to sign, then with the backroom people he has brought to the club and who have been given the time to identify quality players I would hope that he doesn't need to spend millions to get the standard of players we will need.
Mind you like others have said if Warburton feels he needs to spend a million to get a specific player I have every faith in his judgement.

    • great thing is we have rangers men at the top now, not that fat cunt and his palls out to rob us of every penny, wake up newcastle fans before its to late.

  8. I would be worried that spending a million on a player could upset the dressing room if such a player was on so much more than the rest of the players. Our squad have tremendous team spirit and obviously play for each

  9. Some fans would be keen to see us pay £1mill for a dud rather than pick up a bosman gem.

We play in a mickey mouse league let's follow Portos blue print and we'll be fine

  10. Porto's blue print……..aye right, £3 or £4 million for a South American player, then punt him for £30m…………just the job.
Just one teeny problem, we can't find £400k, never mind £4m.

    • What are you on about?? Portos blue print in relative terms.

Tav cost around £300k potential sell on £2mil

Wag cost around £300k potential sell on £2mil

McKay cost £20k sell on £2mil

OHalloran cost £500k sell on £2-£3mill

      Get the idea!!

  11. I would keep an eye out on o'halloran I think he may become another waste o money like Flo they thought wow he's a goal machine when he came to rangers ges been utter garbage o'halloran might be a waste o money also

    • And he might be great…

So your entire point is he might not be great? Because YOU think it? Yet Warbs thinks he's worth it!?

  12. If you think that anyone is going to pay £2/£3m pounds for any of the players quoted, many of whom have spent years moving from one lower league club in England to another, then you are way off the mark.
Take Waghorn as an example…………….if you look at his career stats he averaged one goal in every 5 games he played whilst surfing the lower divisions.
He may well look like a superstar in the Scottish Championship but his previous is what he will be judged on.

  13. Warbs is talking about bringing in 5 or 6 players to be competitive in the SPFL next season.

More quality will cost money, frees and loanees are not the answer.

King has to come up with the cash……………
