Warburton: “We were as good OFF the ball as we were ON it”

Rangers manager Mark Warburton has praised the off-ball work in yesterday’s win over Raith Rovers at Ibrox as much as he has the on-ball play.

The manager, who today celebrates his 53rd birthday (happy birthday fella!), was absolutely delighted with the work ethic off the ball and the desire to get possession back when it was lost.

He said:

“We worked hard to get it back and that was really pleasing for me. When we didn’t have the ball we worked so hard together as a pack to get the ball back and then play again so that was really pleasing.”

As stellar as the football was when Rangers had the ball (and it was sparkling) the off-ball pressing was superb too, especially epitomised when marauding right back James Tavernier found himself on the left flank pressing high, or when defensive anchor Andy Halliday traipsed 20 yards off his spot to intercept a Raith Rovers play.

It is good to see this work, which is clearly being impressed on the players in training paying off in the matches and evidently the manager is delighted with it too.

  1. They seem to have improved every week which is quite astounding. They are also clearly starting to gel as a squad especially when hunting in packs to get the ball back. The speed in which they achieved winning back the ball was staggering and they gave no Raith player any time on the ball what so ever, not even to take a first touch. Really was such a pleasure to watch. The free kick routine was sublime and complicated. I had towatch it 3 times before i worked out the players movement. There arent enough clever free quick routines in football. So well done to Davie weir and the lads for practising that and executing it to perfection. Made me laugh to see Tavernier re inventing himself as a left winger !

  2. Just a treat to watch all the players seem to be enjoying themselves playing for each other ,its a long time I have heard fans like myself saying how many goals are we going to score today .just great keep it up no matter who we play .WATP LOL.
