Report: Rangers linked to left back

Rangers have today been linked
with another left back as potential depth/competition in that position for Lee
Wallace.
The link arose due to Mark
Warburton’s presence in a scouting capacity (see photo) at Cappielow taking in
Greenock Morton’s League Cup tie with League 2 outfit Elgin City, with a view
to, among other things, apparently scoping out the home side’s promising young
defender Mark Russell.

Russell, 19, is a Morton Academy
graduate and was reportedly linked to some substantial English outfits like
Aston Villa, Sunderland and Swansea around 2013, but would be conceivably seen
as a signing similar to Jordan Thompson; not quite first-team starter material,
but high-quality depth from the bench.
Warburton was naturally at
Cappielow to scout the quality of the opposition given Morton will be an
adversary this season in the Championship, but as the manager himself said on Friday when quizzed on Scott Allan:
“Rangers as a club, though, will always
be looking for quality additions, we have to. Any club with ambition has to add
quality to its ranks. If that quality becomes available, we will make a move.
From Rangers’ perspective, we must always be looking to add quality. We have
got our targets and we know as a football department what we want to do. To
achieve those targets, we have to add quality when it does become
available.”
If Russell was to become a viable
target, Warburton might just make his interest tangible.

  1. it would seem this young man fits the bill to bring much needed competition to Rangers left back position…. lets hope he is up for the move, Although that said Morton wont be happy to see such a promising player go.

    • Yeah to me it is another transfer that says no money is going to be spent, grab quantity over quality, hope the positive results and positive feel keeps up long enough so as the transfer window shuts and then get on with it on the cheap with fingers crossed.

  2. Be fine as long as it's a free transfer………….nothing left in the kitty for transfer fees unless King ponies up. Tough times ahead financially, paying the two duds £100k a month up to December and January respectively isn't helping.

  3. How have the BBC managed to do a match report from the peterhead game? Thought their press had banned themselves from ibrox.

  4. Just seen sky sports headline saying rangers toil to win, are they taking the piss ? A 3nil win and 70% posession.

    • I was there also yesterday we took the majority of the first half to breakdown Peterhead we came alive when Miller was pushed onto left midfield with his vision and accurate passing this team is crying out for a creative midfielder, some good individual play Wallace looks a lot fitter, it may take time for this team to gel but for me we still need quality. Also many times through the game there was absolute silence from the crowd just waiting in anticipation of some creative play and finishing. Lots of work to be done but I am sure the attitude and commitment of all involved will come through let's hope the board support Warbuton with cash for quality

  5. Hi I was at IBROX yesterday I dont think they struggled for 1 minute in fact the could have scored at least 3 times in the first half Any of the Fans I talked to all said the same what a change night and day from last season Now we all no NOW Mr Macoist a dud He was a robber the money he spent on players and the wages he put in his pocket

  6. Rangers have spent going by reports between 400-500K on frees. Considering all other Scottish sides who apart from Celtic have spent more with then roughly out of pocket for a sheer million with in’s and outs. Celtic don’t splash the cash so seriously why do we need to. MW is going to make Rangers money plain and simple why because he improves players and will sell them on. He gets more a kick out of bringing in young cheap players or free and turning them into a decent player. Good money will still be getting spent on wages. Who wants king to spend reckless when there is no need. Season tickets are touching on 33K and still selling like hot cakes. I don’t blame fans who want to be apart of the MW and Weir Era.
