Warburton: “The first half wasn’t good enough”

Rangers manager Mark Warburton
has issued a warning to his players that he was far from pleased with the first
half display, and was extremely disappointed that it took ‘until the 43rd
minute’ for his players to register a level of football he was satisfied with.
Speaking after the humbling of
Hibs at Easter Road, Warburton, while pleased with the overall result, was
resolute in his criticism of the sub-par opening period of the match.

He said:

“For us, the result is pleasing of course,
for the fans and the tremendous support they gave us but the first half wasn’t
good enough. What I’ve learned from this group of players in a short period of
time is their honesty, and they recognise the first half was way below the
required level. Good reaction, but still there’s a lot more to come from what
is a talented group of players.”
He especially highlighted the
technical aspects he was deeply concerned with:
“We didn’t pass the ball, we didn’t take
care of the football, didn’t dominate the football, runners came off of us, we
were hesitant with slow decision-making, and it wasn’t us.”
What is pleasing for Rangers fans
in hearing this is learning Warburton will not be easily satisfied. Despite a
rout away from home, he keeps the players grounded by pointing out the poor
first half, and the improvement he expects, and the standards he demands.
This article may seem
unnecessarily negative, but the previous two were espousing nothing but praise
of the team; however, the manager’s job is not to butter his players up, but to
find what is wrong and fix it – and by highlighting the incredibly poor start
Rangers made, he has identified a failing.
And that is the only way Rangers
will keep getting better.

  1. RFC expect nothing less than a win and with Mark W giving his honest estimate of hour he seen his team perform in the first half and not looking at the end result, this is music to my ears. Great to see the good times starting to come back. Amazing to see the fans happy at game today, and I look forward to our team progressing through this year and years to come. And hopefully this is the start of how RFC teams will be set out for generations. Even when Mark W leaves our club. We have taken on the imprint of his styles and ethic.

  2. Couldn't agree more – loving MW this group of players have a lot to prove. Whats nice is all of the new recruited are decent quality but have never had the chance to truly shine, now is their time and Rangers time. Early days but defo moving the right way.

  3. Good too see the manager not letting his team get carried away with themselves. The last thing we need is a team that think they only need to show up. I am really enjoying what I have seen so far. Not heard alot of people mention young Jason Holt. I think that boy will be outstanding for us.

  4. It' s the first time in nearly four years where I have felt good after watching the team play, the closest thing to a Rangers performance ina long long time.It gives me some lift when were playing well , I hope the feel good factor can continue.

  5. Good to hear this,i thought hibs out played us for the first 25/30 mins and we could have been down 3-0 before we scored,i then thought the legs went on most of the hibs players as they where a long way off of being fit enough to play 90 mins at that pace,i thought we got better or was it just that we where the fitter team on the first day of a long hard season ahead.

  6. Only one match to be fair but thank f**k all the clueless negative 'anonymous' posters have disappeared including Stuart Livingstone – hopefully all never to be heard from again! LOL!!

  7. Points well presented Ibrox Noise. Totally agree, the standards required of RFC are a billion light years ahead of what has been accepted over the last 3-4 years.

  8. This is turning into a a right good Rangers Supporters website. Don't know who set it up, but all power to you. Even though there is, from time to time, some who are out to sow discontent, and try to put a spanner in the works of Rangers recovery, not all of them Celtic Supporters either, the decency and common sense, of the real true bears, comes shining through. Onward and upward,
    C'mon the Gers!

  9. Early days…yes, but I've never felt more confident of the man we have at the helm, I like his approach to training, organisation, fitness, player qualities, football system same through all age groups, his determination to be aware of the progress of all age groups and his approach to nutrition and the nurturing of Rangers young talent….we have to be patient though, but real supporters will be because they can see and hear the right things being done and said. Don't forget also that MW's appointment was done by people at the board so they got that right in my opinion, let's give them the credit and some patience too.

  10. Great days ahead for our beloved Rangers, for the first time in my 43 years a bluenose we've got a visionary manager who will, one day, manage his country. In Warbs we trust.

  11. As we all say it is early days but how good is it to be able to put 6 past the team that will probably run us close this year.
I seen the interview with McGregor when he said they have been doing doulr/triple sessions & that seem to pay off as we certainly seemed the fitter of the 2 teams.
Hopefully this momentum will carry & can use it in the nect game.
1st time in years ive been this happy we have beaten decent opposition & set a marker down
now lets get this league won ASAP!
