The million a year that Rangers cannot afford

It really is one of the biggest
elephants in Rangers’ room. Ally McCoist, who handed in his notice last year,
remains on the Club’s payroll, ‘earning’ £72,000 a month while on the famously
monikered ‘Garden Leave’.
It had been assumed McCoist would
hand in his final resignation a week or two into the new regime’s tenure, but
over two months after King and Murray won the EGM, McCoist continues to receive
a salary for doing absolutely nothing.

It is a subject Rangers’ board
refuses to discuss in any more depth than Paul Murray saying on two occasions;
“We will have to sit down (with Ally (and
Kenny)) and have that conversation.”
But no indication of such a
conversation taking place has ever emerged, and if it has, there has been no
report of the termination of McCoist’s salary.
This issue completely divides
Rangers supporters, some of whom do not deny the former Rangers striker the
right to his wage, given his loyalty in 2012 and the sheer weight he took on
his shoulders along with the late Sandy Jardine.
And this argument has some merit –
but others are more critical, stating a ‘real Rangers man’ would have quit to
save his beloved club cash it cannot afford, now that it is ‘in the right hands’.
Especially given he is already a multimillionaire himself.
Indeed, many even believe his
refusal to quit when Llambias and Leach were in power was a protest against
Rangers’-then regime, and that when the proper takeover occurred, he would step
down.
That has not happened.
Ally McCoist continues to draw
around £850,000 a year from Rangers, making him the highest-paid employee at
the Club.
For doing nothing.
Make of this what you will.

  1. Never mind highest paid employee at the Club, he must be one of the highest paid managers, (I use the word lightly), in British Football. The only plus factor is that he is no longer in charge of the coaching. For me he is like a leech, clinging on to suck the blood dry. He is not a Rangers man, he is interested only in money and women! For me he will not go down in history as a legend, I see him as a miserable failure of a coach that played his part alongside Green and Whyte in the process of virtually destroying the Club!

  2. Hers owe him fuckall in terms of him 'shouldering responsibility' or talk of him holding the club together and taking shite et al…..absolute nonsense. For £850k a year you could throw actual shite at me and I'd still be smiling. He's made his corn from Gers over the years and taking money yet is contemptuous.

Ally the player will always be a legend, Ally the manager will go down as a diddy. I hope the latter doesn't whitewash the former.

  3. I truly expect him to invest his salary at the new share issue. That will be the deal he has done. But it cannot be mentioned at present. He already is a large shareholder. I presume he bought them. So to further invest will secure his legend status. Just to take the money will ruin his legend status and history will show him to be a front man for Green.

  4. Slinky I have only recently started commenting on this website. I must say I tend to agree with most of what you say. There are still so many people out there with McCoist-tinted glasses on, and it frustrates the life out of me.

An excellent player, but a really poor manager. If you care about the club Ally, please do walking away and let the club move forward.

  5. Can anyone name one player who improved as a footballer since joining Rangers? ……me neither. Surely the job description of team manager /coach should be to identify talent from elsewhere whilst working with the current squad members to improve their game. For me, his contract should have been ripped up long ago for gross incompetence. Let him take the club to court to prove otherwise.

  6. If he takes the money to re-invest in shares, 40% will go to the taxman, plus any supergross (NI etc) on his salary. That would be pure loss to Rangers. Has anyone in the press questioned him about this? Or are they all too friendly with him. Hard to find an explanation other than pure greed – but if it's not that, why are you so quiet Ally?

  7. Its his wage and he has the right to it – it is easy as that and I don't be grudge him of it. Same for anyone else that is due THEIR wage.

  8. If it was you, you try your best, things don't go well and you are fired, not happy, but actually you wanted to try and turn it around and you have a contract that cannot be broken, the board don't care, the mess needs sorted, you can't, it turns out be fired, we dont want you so we will pay you to stay away until the binding contract expires. I don't care who you are, what your financial position is or care you have shown for the company is, you go and you accept what is yours! J

  9. "Has anyone in the press questioned him about this?"

Has anyone in the press questioned any of the underhand dealings at Ibrox????

  10. Just a thought,,,, But this is no way to talk about Super Ally, I watched this guy growing up and had some of the greatest memories watching him. Granted he was no manager, but his goals alone are worth every penny of That salary, even today!!!

  11. Fans are starting to become a little frustrated with the lack of communication from the new board. What happened to the 'Honesty and Transparency' rhetoric. Periodic updates might help alleviate the growing discontent. There are a number of outstanding issues that the fans have concerns over. We don't need in-depth information, but it would be respectful to the fans to hear that certain issues, concerns were being addressed. The current board and supporter groups have had outstanding backing from the fans. Supporter power ousted the former board – there are those that would do well to remember that!

  12. Gardening leave ……what a blooming cheek, I'm sure that he has all the materials to grow good roses though.

  13. Who needs TIMS when we treat a legend &real bluenose like that, all the haters should follow follow Celtic.
