Why McCall’s Rangers Revolution needs leeway

9

Pre-match on Sunday, most
reactions regarding Stuart McCall’s team selection, following that
excruciatingly disappointing loss at Palmerston the previous Thursday centred
around disbelief that Nicky Law was on the left wing and Robbie Crawford was at
right back.
This blog professed McCall would come out all guns blazing, would get it right on Sunday, and the players would right the wrongs of QoS. It did not even matter what the selection or
formation, the attitude and football would be restored.
After 10 minutes, confirmation
that this was the case when Clark rose
elegantly to bullet home a header and make that early domination count.
Truly, this was a stroll, a
thoroughly professional display and a clinical one at that, and one which did
not earn the credit it deserved, given how badly the side was castigated
following the loss to the Doonhamers.
While there was indeed a slight
dip in the second half, yet more goals for the likes of Vuckic and Law ensured
Rangers fans went home happy to the tune of 4-0, and very few admitted a
ridiculous over reaction following events at Queens.
All those players dismissed as
derogatorily as possible on Thursday were suddenly the toast of Ibrox, with
short memories the order of the day.
By no means are Raith Real
Madrid, but that was the kind of match Rangers were struggling in under McCoist
or McDowall. And McCall’s record now reads seven matches, 14 points, and just
that one ugly defeat.
And that team selection I alluded
to at the start? Smooth as silk. Crawford strolled the 90 at RB, and Law had a
busy afternoon covering a great deal of turf on top of nabbing a brace.
Us Rangers fans have been through
hell and back, but while we are not going to win every match, McCall is making
sincere and genuine progress with the same set of players who could not
previously light a match, never mind win one.
That progress should be
recognised, and not dismissed when the occasional ugly result surfaces.
We are far from the finished
product, we will lose matches now and again, but until we are SPL Rangers again
and demanding the title, reaction to losing a match should be to learn from it,
not throw the entire Club in the fire.

  1. Another good piece. McCall has done well since he's come in and while we're not yet world-beaters, there has been a great improvement in all aspects of the team's play. As you say, we won't (just like any team) win all our games and the reaction to one defeat was over the top. We're making steady progress and now look a good bet for promotion and with some investment in the team in the coming months, can look forward to getting back to the premiership. And while we shouldn't kid ourselves on that it's going to be easy, there are no world-beaters there either.

    • I thought playing Crawford at full back was indicative of the fact that McCall uses some imagination in his selections. I don't think he could play him there in a tight match away from home, but trying to play attacking football at Ibrox it was a good call.

  2. You don't really think Rangers will ever again be World Beaters, anyway I think we are so far away from that, just like Scottish football, unless we invest more in youth (something liquidation gave the opportunity to do), before you reply, the last thing we need is more investment in players, proven to not work, Mr K may have money but his plan is invest to recoup not build. 3. Couldn't agree more. It will take time and patience to get the Club to where we want it to be. And now, more than ever, is when the Club needs the support to be turning out in numbers to give them helpings of confidence to lift the performances. What did disappoint me about the game in Dumfries was the team's inability to capitalise on our vastly superior corner count: From dead-ball situations, it is evident that the players need to do more.

Regarding the support, I was not enamoured by those in our midst who booed Hearts onto the field when our players formed a guard of honour for them at Ibrox on 5 April. Hearts deserve to be champions and I'm full of admiration for the way they've turned their fortunes around. The guard of honour was, I thought, a fitting and poignant tribute to Hearts achievement while they commemorate the centenary of McCrae's Battalion. If the ignorant among us didn't approve, they should've at least remained quiet. I applauded. Sometimes I think we don't do ourselves justice.

    • To be honest, I didn't hear any booing. So may have just been a small number near you. Apologies if I am wrong.(I was in Broomloan)

  4. I seem to remember a game back in the early 60's when Rangers applauded Celtic on to the park directly after they'd had a good result in Europe in their previous match . Am i dreaming or did this actually happen ?

  5. Where is the promised investment? If the old board had lied like this board has, the sos and uof would be screaming blue murder, just like they did to have us dropped from AIM.
Lets face it, there will be no investment by the 3 bears or king, only loans like what Ashley was doing, until ST sales and share issue are banked. They then they payback what's owed……………. back to square one, but it'll still be old board and Ashley's fault of course.

  6. McCall is not the answer. Got his tactics wrong against QOS. If that had been Mccoist he would have been slaughtered. He is better than previous manager but he was a total incompetent.
