Steven Simonsen’s brass neck

Steven Simonsen’s brass neck

With the news that the SFA failed
in their bid to get Steve Simonsen’s ban increased beyond two matches, the
English stopper has expressed disgust at their intentions, and condemned the
original ban as effectively ‘ruining’ his Rangers career.
Problem here, Steve, is you did
not regain your place after that initial suspension because third-choice Lee
Robinson was a hell of a lot better than you, hence then-management confirming
he was to remain first choice, until Bell returned.

Your astounding arrogance in
making some vague assumption that you had first-refusal on the number 1 jersey
is beyond staggering, and sums up the kind of complacency with selection
Rangers have suffered until recently.
Cammy Bell is number 1 at Ibrox, not you, and for you
to whine about loss of earnings and loss of place strongly infers you believe
you have a divine right to start.
Speaking on his behalf, PFA
spokesman Fraser Wishart had the following to say on the subject:
“The one game suspension that he did
serve meant he lost his place in the Rangers first team at that point and he
hasn’t been able to get it back since.
“So, it has an effect on him in terms of appearance money, and
also perhaps even his ability to get a new contract at the club.”
Steven Simonsen’s own inferiority
to both Lee Robinson then Cammy Bell is why he lost his place, not an SFA ban. And
for a multimillionaire footballer to complain about losing appearance money he
is not even entitled to sums up the woeful attitude of too many players at
Ibrox.
He himself has the following to
espouse:
“I have lost my place in the Rangers team
and, in the last couple of weeks, my place in the squad all together. I’m out
of contract at the end of the season and I absolutely fear for my Rangers
career now. I’m not even involved in the matchday squad and I also worry my
good reputation built up over 20 years in football has been tarnished.”
‘Simmo’ is out of contract this
summer, and there is a snowball in Hell’s chance he will be renewed.

  1. Fair article.. My first thought when I read the headline was "well, you shouldn't have been betting then, should you?"

Some of the goals he has lost in service to rangers have been truly awful.. The guys a dreadful keeper and we would have been better keeping Scott Gallacher IMO.

  2. Well said! He put himself in this position to begin with by breaking the rules regarding betting – time to dry your eyes Stevie Boy!

  3. No need to be harsh. The rules are a sham and it's only gets players who get hammered it appears.

Yes he's not been terrific but he's still a Gers player and I've no doubt he gave his all. If he feels hard done by then that's his opinion. Get aff his case.

Thought this was a bears site.

    • Exactly and the point he was making is that it was down to the suspension that gave Robinson the chance. He would probably have stayed in the team until Bell was fit and then have been second choice after that, now he finds himself out of the picture altogether so I think he makes a valid point.

  4. Your right Slinky, it is a bears site…But clearly Simonsen along with quite a few others never have or never will be true bears….money talks as they say…

    • True bears? Sorry don't get that.

Was Laudrup a 'true bear' ? Gazza?

Did Numan, Van Bronkhurst, or DeBoer come to Ibrox to play for the cause over and above the money?

Simonsen isn't in that category but it doesn't mean he didn't give the same effort.

Personally I wish to see him go but like all players who do their best it will be with my best wishes…..irrespective of how great or otherwise.

  5. How life changes. In my day I used to pop in to the bookies for a bet before the game. If I was there early the owner would be taking my money. George Niven , the Rangers Goalkeeper! Compliance Officer? More jobs for the boys. He should now be fired. Totally over the top reaction to a minor offence. Simonsen was always leaving at end of this season. He should never have been in Rangers team but it is wrong that the compliance officer should do the managers job. So Simonsen has a point.

  6. The compliance offer should be fired. A trivial offence. Simonsen should have been dropped by the Manager. He would never have been offered another deal.

  7. A wouldn't give this so much web time. 3rd rate keeper not fit for Rangers, as a Rangers site we as fans choose who becomes a true blue or not, he is blue but not Rangers blue, it's cold outside.

  8. SFA actually did us a favour for once as he wasn`t getting left out for being awful ….which he should have.Everyone was well aware of the rules after the Black & Moffat cases so for him to plead ignorance is a joke .I thought he got off lightly .That said for the SFA to appeal against their own independent panel is an even bigger joke and shows just how much credibility they and Anthony O`Glennan have left .Resignations in order.
