Paul Murray: “Ashley negotiations a matter of urgency”

Rangers’ interim chairman Paul
Murray has reiterated his desire to sit down with Mike Ashley to discuss his
involvement at Ibrox.
Following the concession on the
Rangers board’s part that negotiating the conditions of Newcastle owner Ashley’s
ownership of the Club crest and trademarks is a ‘matter of urgency’, a meeting
is top of the agenda.
Murray said:

“We’re looking into all the contractual
relationships with Sports Direct. I’ve been here a month now and we’re looking
into this with a matter of urgency as of today’s date.”
He went on:
“We said before we have to engage with him
and we’re happy to do that. He’s a large shareholder, he’s got a number of
commercial relationships with the Club so we have to do that and sit down at
some point. We haven’t done it so far, but it’s certainly the plan to do that.”
Murray also believes Ashley wishes to engage
with the Rangers board despite the Englishman’s previous reluctance to do so:
“Obviously he wants Sports Direct to be
successful and I think for it to be successful he wants the Club to be
successful and obviously that’s our objective so I think it could be a win-win
relationship in this going forward.”
Given Ashley’s reclusiveness and
contractual control over the Club trademarks, crest and directorships, it is
hard to see a meeting any time soon, never mind one which benefits Rangers.

  1. Well written especially the last sentence. One of Ashley's minions will require us to accept two of his nominees onto the board before any talks of any kind take place. There will then be a number of deals suiting Ashley with some scraps for us, but these will be withheld for any peiod during which his nominees are pushed off i.e. he will always have two people on our board. I don't envy our guys trying to deal with this. Don't see how they can ever win.

  2. The billionaire should accede to a request for a meeting from a failed businessman/absolute non-entity?!?! Get real mini

  3. Easy option buy nothing from any of Ashley's shops a hundred per cent of nothing still equals nothing
    Buy from Follow Follow etc

    • You are not aware of the clause under which we guarantee high sales volumes and the club itself has to buy any merchandise ourselves which is left unsold to supporters? And don't tell me this is not true, just get your news from proper sources and not from the MSM who feed you crap which you come on here and regurgitate.

    • Sounds to me like that is an unfair contract term that hopefully the clubs lawyers will get overturned!

    • Ian, I have personal experience of a contract where the buyer agreed to take 1'00% of the output of an item of their own designed bespoke hardware at a time when demand was high and the capacity limited. Demand dropped, and the manufacturer maximised output and forced them to take the all the output. The court upheld the contrat as being legal..

  4. litigation required ultimately.
these contracts were manoeuvred by Ashley.
we can thank the Easdales for that.

    • If they were signed off by properly appointed authorised signatories they are valid and won't be overturned in court even if the authorised signatories included Llambias and/or Leach. The question is whether whoever signed off (and I haven't seen this defined anywhere) was properly appointed (mentioned in board note and signed off by a recognised authority). This is Corporate Governance 101 and I would be amazed if Ashley left any loopholes.

    • Corporate Governance 101. In the name of the wee man……another expert.

I'm surprised the country's on its arse what with all the corporate governance, tax experts, law experts and business strategists around Glesga….,

    • Speak for yourself Skanks, not surprising if you're on your arse. Its a bit cold outside where I am but the view of Lake Geneva from my hot and toasty villa where I am sipping glüwein is magnificent. Slope on ya mug.

    • This time they will be talking "ATOMISATION" Slinky. Into the blender WHEEEEE!

  5. Their's more in this than meets the eye, perhaps a deal on Trident can be struck seriously though, Ashley knows his only chance of advertising on the champions League is with us, NFC no chance, politics not football is being played, and money talks,I'm convinced behind the closed doors someone on both parts are mediating, the shit hit the fan yesterday before QOS match, the loss coincidence not sure.

    • You are mistaken, UEFA dictate what can be advertised – Heineken etc and Ashley cannot display Sports Direct merchandise at UEFA matches. He is quite happy with the retail business and getting income from all our crests, Broxi and other image badges etc. See all four pages of ipo.gov.uk/tmownerid/search?domain=1&id=48839&app=1&name=SPORTSDIRECT&postcode=

  6. very simple…. change present name (legaly) to rangers of glasgow ltd.then op. a new co. under new name and let him ( Ashley and his puppets ) sue the old name all he wants to and that could drag thro the courts fror YEARS……

  7. I can tell you that Mr Murray and the Rangers Board have now tried on 3 occasions to have a meeting with Mr Ashley, twice before Mr Murray's 1st Press conference, all to no avail. I don't think they know who they are dealing with, there is the business world and then there is THE business world.

  8. Why would Ashley meet with them he holds all the cards and can pull all the strings for a measly 6.5 mill not a bad deal, especially when you throw in the deals he has. He will recoup his money in short order so its a win win win situation for him

  9. I find it astonishing "simple just change the name" you really are deluded if that's you answer to a business situation. Big MIKE has got you by the nuts and yous think he wont win. Sevco must be the first club in history to welcome the millionaire and chase away a billionaire. Looks like the jelly n ice cream song coming on all over again !!!!

  10. "he wants the Club to be successful and obviously that’s our objective so I think it could be a win-win relationship in this going forward.”

WOW, how naive! He is only interested in advertising SD and has NO interest in football

  11. Mike Ashley is one of our major shareholders as is Mr King. Now, we can all speculate as much as we like, but we truly do not know whats happened behind closed doors,,what with the old board and the new one. We have been assured that an enquiry is currently being made and all Sports Direct contracts are being forensically examined. Mike Ashley is waiting for the results of that examination before deciding what his next move will be. We currently still have a 5 million pound loan to pay back which holds our trademark, RFC badge, and murray park. Im confident that will get paid. Mike Ashley has not made any public sounds at all, however, I think it would be wrong to think that both Mike Ashley and Mr King haven't spoken behind closed doors. We are only feeding from the scraps of information from the media and some sound bites from Mr Murray, Watch this space when the real truth comes out which will probably come out after the season is finished so that the team can focus on promotion. I for one would welcome investment from Mike Ashley, he is a billionaire with fantastic world wide contacts,, as long as its controlled in a business which suits solely with Rangers Football Club. Let just wait and see my fellow bears..

  12. and the newcastle support just sit back an pay pay pay into his pot knowing they will never win anything, they need to wake up fast,,,,,

  13. Ashley would be fine if he was Willing 2 buy into our success . with his resources we could wipe the floor with septic, it could work 4 both sides but we need clarity from him.

    • What success????? septic?????? stop dragging your club down.
If you were holding all the aces what would you do????

    • Thank you Stanley Unwin. If ma granny had baws…. But Celtic got the only baws in Glesca, that's why about a dozen pickpockets have been running rings round you remedial fannies for 3 years.

  14. God its dire to read the Ashley love tomes. This guy is a shark. A moron who got rich punting sports socks and now has grubby accountants calling all his shots. His henchmen failed their corporate governance responsibilities and should be punished. Ashley has nobody by the nuts.

  15. Cynical, greedy people will not win – we will overcome them. It will be painful, along the way but good always overcomes bad.

  16. Murray wants to sit down with Ashley in an attempt to gain a win-win situation for Rangers but rest assured if that does not happen then they play hardball back. Despite his money Ashley is weak. A very rich man who got lucky selling tat to neds but who lacks the business acumen of the real power players. Rangers could modify the badge as Alastair Johnstone has advised and there goes his rights. Pay back his loan and there goes his property claims. His board flunkees have been booted and his shares watered down. The boy is running out of options. A man of his means could have made a killing from the financial markets but he's trawling around in the gutter trying a hostile takeover of a brand that won't accept it. Mug!

    • Seldom have I heard such self assured confidence coming from a position of such inane naiiveté.

  17. Can someone please explain to me why Mike Ashley is in no immediate hurry to be asking for his £129 million loan to be paid back by Newcastle . Why would he even consider asking for his loan of a paltry £5 million to be paid back by Rangers . It is obvious that the guy does not need the money any time soon and he is just playing mind games with everyone .

  18. Call Ashley a moron? 4 Billion! And you? Whit bus to ye get oot Drumchapel? Is that tae yer slops porter nightshift or is it jist tae sign on? Deluded fanny

  19. Can't stand all the backbiting on here. I think Paul Murray is very handsome, and speaks very nicely. He transfixes me.

  20. 7.55 my point is Ashley's loose change would put the bears back on top as there's no much of a challenge there, the shit p.f.l. table tells you that. Any decent investment at the big hoose & you can kiss goodbye tae another easy title !

  21. ASHLEY CHOSE THE RANG CLUB HE COULD HAVE PUNTED AWE TIMS DODGY GEAR DOON THE BARRAS AN HID AWE THE LOOSE CHANGE IN THE BISCUIT TINS YE SEE DOON THERE.

  22. I have read this three times and still don't understand it. They have got zillions and the most professional approach to financial management in Britain. Have another drink anyway. Cheers.
