BT Sport & SPFL praying for Rangers’ progression

BT Sport have confirmed all six
play-off matches will be broadcast live in their entirety on their channels,
with both legs of each fully included, but while this is being promoted as a
chance to see Rangers’ bid to be promoted, in reality the Ibrox side’s hopes of
being involved in all six matches are on a knife-edge.
The playoffs have been fully
dated now:

Saturday May 9, 2015 (5.30pm ko):
Premiership Play-Off quarter-final, 1st leg (BT SPORT 1)
Sunday May 17, 2015 (3.30pm ko):
Premiership Play-Off quarter-final, 2nd leg (BT SPORT 2)
Wednesday May 20, 2015 (7.45pm
ko): Premiership Play-Off semi-final, 1st leg (BT SPORT 1)
Saturday May 23, 2015 (12noon
ko): Premiership Play-Off semi-final, 2nd leg (BT SPORT 1)
Thursday May 28, 2015 (7.45pm
ko): Premiership Play-Off final, 1st leg (BT SPORT 1)
Sunday May 31, 2015 (3pm ko):
Premiership Play-Off final, 2nd leg (BT SPORT 1)
But the truth is BT and the SPFL
are only especially praying Rangers make it through the first two ties. That
guarantees an audience for the final one, and in terms of viewership and
sponsorship, as long as Rangers make that final it barely matters if they win.
However, according to sources, as
I revealed on this site some months ago, even if Rangers do not make it to the
SPL by way of playoff, there are contingencies in place for SPL reconstruction
to expand it by four teams, seeing all the top four Championship sides promoted
to satisfy Sky’s demands for certain Old Firm matches next season.
But crucially, here and now, all
the SPFL & BT Sport need regarding the playoffs is for Rangers to make the
final. Beyond that does not really matter to them.

  1. With the current bunch of players I would be far from confident that Rangers will make it to the SPL this season and if they do there will need to be a fundamental change in the playing staff at the club next season.

I agree with the fundamental need for a change in playing staff. But I would point out it has already started. Of the 12 out of contract this summer, several have already disappeared – Daly, Boyd, Black, Faure, Mohsni to name but 5. Others, such as Jig, I suspect will not be offered a playing contract for next season, unless it is to help with the reserves. I would be surprised at more than 4 of the dozen getting a deal. Probably fewer.

This gives us scope to add to the squad 6 from the youth team and some experience. I think McCall has a track record in this area, havbing rebuilt Motherwell every year. It would be easier with our wage budget, enhanced with the salaries of the departing.

So lets look forward with confidence
